The purpose of this study was to examine sibling relationships and caregiver burden in families raising children with disabilities (CWD). In order to determine (a) are there differences in caregiver burden according to parent gender and types of disability (b) are there differences in sibling relationships according to parent gender and type of disability and (c) is there a relationship between caregiver burden and sibling relationships after controlling for CWD and sibling gender and age, and type of disability? For the past decade participation in service and experiential learning in higher education has increased. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of BSN and MSN students participating in a multidisciplinary service-learning course in a rural, underserved village in Belize. Researchers analyzed student journals utilizing qualitative data analysis techniques. There were eight consistent themes found in the student journals. The findings indicate that international service learning opportunities increase students' awareness of their place in a global society and the potential contribution they can make in society. Background: To improve the quality of health care in remote parts of Pakistan, a research project was initiated in the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan using information and communication technology to improve patient care and support continuing education of health providers (eHealth). This paper describes the experience of nurses in using eHealth in their routine practices.
Methods: All health centres of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan using eHealth as part of this study, were taken as a single case. Excerpt: A recent study published in Workplace Health & Safety concluded, “Morbidity burden level is an indicator of work limitations in employees with diabetes and can be used to identify employees who may benefit from specialized services aimed at addressing their work limitations associated with diabetes” (Sylvia et al., 2012, p. 425). This conclusion is not warranted by the findings of the study because of limitations to both internal and external validity.

Magnet® designation and redesignation efforts are time and resource intensive. The results of a survey of nurses’ perceptions about 4 components of sustainability indicate differences between Magnet and non-Magnet hospitals. Evaluating nurses’ perception of the sustainability of Magnet efforts will help nurse executives determine where to commit financial, time, and human resources.

Purpose: To present the current state of the evidence regarding translation of genetics (the study of single genes) and genomics (the study of all genes and gene-gene or gene-environment interactions) into health care of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Methods: This article presents an overview of ASD as an international health challenge, the emerging science related to broad diagnostic criteria, and the role of the nurse in research, education, and practice.

Theresa “Tootsie” Smoder, better known as my grandma, always seemed larger than life. She bore eight children in nine years (The “Crazy Eights”), raised them almost single-handedly when her husband died and managed a 160 acre farm. Doing whatever it took to create security and stability for her family, Tootsie worked multiple jobs to feed her brood. She was a social butterfly who always tended to others and modeled the value of caring throughout her life.

Schools are group settings where vaccine-preventable diseases can spread quickly, especially if vaccination rates are suboptimal. Vaccination of school children has been the subject of many studies; however, data are lacking regarding the vaccination status, vaccination perceptions, and potential barriers to vaccination for school employees. Method: A questionnaire was developed to measure school employees' perceptions,awareness of current vaccination status, and potential barriers to vaccinations. This study included a convenience sample of 277 employees from a small urban school district located in central Utah. Objective: The Institute of Medicine's Future of Nursing report identifies the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) as an innovative and necessary new role for meeting higher healthcare quality standards. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing CNL White Paper defines core competencies necessary for practice. The literature documents preliminary evidence of improved outcomes associated with CNL integration into clinical microsystems. However, the CNL role is not yet clearly defined in terms of fundamental activities and responsibilities necessary to produce outcomes. What is the experience of interprofessional collaboration as a nursing, occupational, or physical therapy health care student taking part in a weeklong service-learning experience? Interprofessional collaboration among health care professionals yields improved patient outcomes, yet many students in health care programs have limited exposure to interprofessional collaboration in the classroom and in clinical and service-learning experiences. This practice gap implies that students enter their professions without valuing interprofessional collaboration and the impact it has on promoting positive patient outcomes.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) the first nursing theorist and the first one to lay the foundation of modern nursing has based her philosophy on spiritualism. Selanders (2010) quotes (Cook, 1913, Vol. 1, p. 15) in saying, that “She records in her diary an interaction with God at age 16 when He “called her to His service” (p.82). The purpose of this research was to examine (1) the rates of elevated blood glucose ≥ 150 mg/dL in adults without a prior history of diabetes, receiving care for a non-diabetes related visit to the ED and (2) Emergency Department provider patterns for informing and referring discharged Emergency Department patients for follow-up of elevated random blood glucose levels. A descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional design, with purposive sample was used. OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study was to investigate and improve the use of automated data collection procedures for nursing research and quality assurance.

METHODS:

A descriptive, correlational study analyzed 44 orthopedic surgical patients who were part of an evidence-based practice (EBP) project examining post-operative oxygen therapy at a Midwestern hospital. The automation work attempted to replicate a manually-collected data set from the EBP project.

RESULTS:

Automation was successful in replicating data collection for study data elements that were available in the clinical data repository. The automation procedures identified 32 "false negative" patients who met the inclusion criteria described in …

This study evaluated the effect of the Mantram Repetition Program (MRP), an internet-delivered stress management course on burnout, stress of conscience, spiritual wellbeing, and mindfulness on a self-selected group of healthcare workers (HCWs). A quasi-experimental repeated measures design was used. Participants enrolled in a six-session MRP delivered over three months and completed baseline, post-course, and three-month post-course assessments. Measurement tools included the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), the Stress of Conscience Questionnaire (SCQ), the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Spiritual Wellbeing Scale (FACIT-12), and the Mindfulness Awareness Attention Scale (MAAS). Researchers function in a complex environment and carry multiple role responsibilities. This environment is prone to various distractions that can derail productivity and decrease efficiency. Effective time management allows researchers to maintain focus on their work, contributing to research productivity. Thus, improving time management skills is essential to developing and sustaining a successful program of research. This article presents time management strategies addressing behaviors surrounding time assessment, planning, and monitoring.
