One of the trends currently affecting academic libraries is higher education’s expanding use of online instruction and a rising number of totally online degree programs. As libraries have transitioned from primarily print holdings to a growing reliance on electronic formats, access has become more convenient for all, including distance students. Socio-cultural factors negate the health of women. Therefore, health promotion as a focus of nursing practice aimed at capitalizing on the inherent capacities of women to establish health priorities, goals and strategies to improve their health. A descriptive survey with the purpose of ascertaining the influence of culture, social and health policies on nurses’ practice of health promotion was undertaken. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A sample of one hundred and thirty six nurses participated in the study. A Retrospective Review Of Sliding Scale Vs. Basal/Bolus Insulin Protocols, Heidi L. Rymaszewski, Susan Breakwell

Purpose

The purpose was to assess the differences between subcutaneous basal/bolus and sliding scale insulin protocols in patients admitted with type 2 diabetes on non-critical care units.

Methods

A retrospective review of electronic medical records was conducted on a convenience sample of inpatients in a central-city teaching hospital.

Results

The findings were that basal/bolus protocols achieved American Diabetes Association glycemic targets on fasting, mean, and discharge blood glucoses.

Conclusions

This study provided insight into glycemic control and interdisciplinary education needs at this hospital. Evidence revealed that basal/bolus insulin protocols can achieve glycemic targets.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has an estimated prevalence of greater than 1% of people in the US. Caring for children with ASD is stressful and challenging for parents. The purpose of the study is to understand the ramifications of the findings of a spouse/father's lack of participation for a study focused on stress and family functioning that attempted to recruit both parents of a child with ASD. There is a clear call in group counseling practice and training for evidence-based practice (ACA, 2005; ASGW, 2008; CACREP, 2009). At the same time, group counselors also are asked to keep clients' experience at the center of their work (ASGW, 2012). This article outlines the authors' effort to develop and study an instrument designed to measure group counselors' conceptualization skill using group members' subjective perceptions as a foundation. Descriptions of the instrument's internal reliability, construct validity, and generalizability will be presented, as well as suggestions for conducting research on this instrument in future studies.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common health problem with symptoms including reduced functioning and joint pain. Protracted pharmacological management of knee OA is associated with side effects including gastrointestinal, renal, and neurological dysfunction.Menthol gels have been used with limited empirical support to relieve pain and improve functioning among individual with OA. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability to complete functional tasks and knee pain while completing functional tasks among patients with knee OA after topical application of either 3.5% menthol gel or an inert placebo gel. Background: Putting evidence into practice at the point of care delivery requires an understanding of implementation strategies that work, in what context and how.

Objective: To identify methodological issues in implementation science using 4 studies as cases and make recommendations for further methods development.

Research Design: Four cases are presented and methodological issues identified. For each issue raised, evidence on the state of the science is described.

Results: Issues in implementation science identified include diverse conceptual frameworks, potential weaknesses in pragmatic study designs, and the paucity of standard concepts and measurement.

Background: Quality measurement is central in efforts to improve health care delivery and financing. The Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative supported interdisciplinary research teams to address gaps in measuring the contributions of nursing to quality care.

Objective: To summarize the research of 4 interdisciplinary teams funded by The Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative and reflect on challenges and future directions to improving quality measurement.

Methods: Each team summarized their work including the targeted gap in measurement, the methods used, key results, and next steps. The authors discussed key challenges and recommended future directions.

Psychometrics Of The Depressive Cognition Scale In Caregivers Of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski

Caregivers of persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are prone to depression, and early identification of cognitive depressive symptoms is important to prevent the development of clinical depression. The Depressive Cognition Scale (DCS) can be used for early detection, but the scale's psychometrics has not been tested in caregivers of persons with ASD. In this study, 95 caregivers of persons with ASD completed the eight-item DCS and measures of caregiver burden and resourcefulness. A Cronbach's alpha of .90 indicated internal consistency. Construct validity was supported by significant correlations with caregiver burden (.59) and resourcefulness (− .57). Principal component factor analysis …

The relationship between tonsillectomy and postoperative weight gain in children has been studied across the globe. Indications for tonsillectomy include chronic recurrent tonsillitis and obstructive sleep apnea. This phenomenon of weight gain postoperatively and the many possible causes were the focus of this systematic review. Relationships between adenotonsillectomy/tonsillectomy, dietary habits, obstructive sleep apnea, motor activity, hyperactivity, insulin-like growth factor-1, insulin growth factor binding protein -3, and weight gain were investigated. Findings supported a relationship between adenotonsillectomy/tonsillectomy and postoperative weight gain, decreased sleep apnea, decreased motor activity and hyperactivity, an affinity for sugary and fatty foods, and an increase in insulin …

For a majority of patients with advanced heart failure, there is a need for complementary, non-pharmacologic interventions that could be easily implemented by health care providers to provide palliative care. Three major pathologic pathways underlying heart failure symptoms have been identified: fluid overload, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Prior research has demonstrated that three nutrients-sodium, omega-3 fatty acids, and lycopene-can alter these pathologic pathways. Journal of Undergraduate Research

Nursing students were required to complete 120 clinical hours in Wendover over a 4 week period. This required 4 trips to Wendover, UT and 4 overnight accommodations. The students rotated through several clinical sites including Anna Smith Elementary, Wendover High School, Toole Public Health Department and the Wendover Community Health Center. At each clinical site, students were paired with members of the community to facilitate learning. BYU students had daily contact with school nurses, teachers and administrators to assist in understanding their role and completing their assignments. The academic objectives of the MEG proposal were met and exceeded. Specifically, students were exposed to local and national venues in which Veterans and their history are prevalent. Examples of this include visits by the students and faculty to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, VA Medical Center War Related Injury and Illness Study Center, Arlington National Cemetery, US Capitol, Gettysburg Battlefield, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial, WW I Memorial, WW II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Museum of American History, etc. We also met with Senator Bennett from the State of Utah to discuss issues pertaining to our Veterans.
