A thorough understanding of the mechanisms underlying barley salt tolerance and exploitation of elite genetic resource are essential for utilizing wild barley germplasm in developing barley varieties with salt tolerance. In order to reveal the physiological and molecular difference in salt tolerance between Tibetan wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum) and cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare), profiles of 82 key metabolites were studies in wild and cultivated barley in response to salinity. According to shoot dry biomass under salt stress, XZ16 is a fast growing and salt tolerant wild barley. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of women with HTN self-managing their perceived BP changes. van Manen's phenomenology methodology and method guided the inquiry, and also guided the existential reflection of the impact of perceived BP changes on the participants' lifeworlds (e.g, lived space, lived body, lived time, and lived relations).

This project was a replication of a previous study conducted with medical residents to determine if repeat testing produced higher scores as compared to repeat study. Current literature reports that repeated testing produces higher scores than repeated studying. This project was conducted with first semester nursing students who were provided a learning session on two topics, followed by a multiple-choice test and review sheet for each topic. Multimodal therapy for surgical patients is explified by use of a combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and an opioid to control visceral pain by decreasing both inflammation and pain transmission. Perioperative or postoperative use of multimodal therapy has been shown to provide adequate surgical pain relief while decreasing the total dose of opioids required. This project demonstrated that preoperative use of ibuprofen for women undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy decreased the total dose of opioids consumed in a 24-hour period, and increased the likelihood of the patient reaching her pain goal target at discharge. Methadone is increasingly being used for palliative cancer patients for pain management. Physicians are "rotating" opioids to help reduce opioid side effects, and help increase pain response due to tolerance of another opioid. Methadone has been compared to other opioids in studies in which it has been rotated with another opioid. The studies compared the adverse effects, cost, and the rate of success to achieve adequate pain management.

Studies consistently show that women want safe, effective, easy to use, and convenient methods of family planning (Arévalo,1997; Severy 2001). Although Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods are free of side effects, they are often ineffective and complex to learn and use (Grimes et al. 2005). Efforts have occurred over the past 10 years to simplify the teaching and use of NFP methods and increase their efficacy. These efforts include the development of low tech calendar-based methods (Arévalo et al. 2004), simplifying instructions (Frank-Herrmann et al. 2005), and developing accurate biological markers of fertility (Guida et al. 1999).

Translating research to the bedside can present significant challenges in the complex ICU environment. In this issue of Critical Care, de Jong and colleagues report on a quality improvement project (NURSE-DO) that led to a decrease in severe pain and serious adverse events during nursing care procedures in their ICU. In this commentary we describe three aspects of this quality improvement study that we think contributed to the overall success of the NURSE-DO project: the hospital environment and culture; multi-professional partnerships; and an evidence-based structured approach.
