Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder impacting the health of young female populations. Using harmonized estimates from 953 locations, we assessed temporal trends, geographic inequalities, and forecasts of PCOS among individuals aged 10-24 years from 1990 to 2040. Between 1990 and 2021, global prevalence and disability burden increased by more than 30%, with the highest burden observed among those aged 20-24 years. Substantial geographic heterogeneity was identified, with particularly high prevalence in Europe and East Asia. While high-income regions carried the greatest absolute burden, low- and middle-income regions showed the fastest growth, accompanied by widening …

Volumetric modulated arc therapy-computed tomography (VMAT-CT), which is the CT reconstructed using the portal images collected during VMAT, can potentially be an effective onsite imaging tool. The goal of this study was to propose an iterative reconstruction algorithm that can further improve the image quality of VMAT-CT and reduce the number of failed reconstructions. An iterative algorithm combining total variation (TV) with block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) was proposed, addressing the L1-L2 regularization problem using the split Bregman method. We collected portal images from 67 VMAT cases including 50 phantom and 17 real-patient cases. Both Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) and TV-BM3D iterative …

Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive interstitial lung disease characterized by the accumulation of fibrotic tissue within the lungs, leading to impaired respiratory function and reduced quality of life. Early detection is important for disease management; however, accurate diagnosis often relies on high-resolution computed tomography (CT), which may not be accessible in all clinical settings. Chest radiography provides a lower-cost and widely available imaging modality, but interpretation of chest X-rays for fibrotic disease can be challenging due to subtle radiographic patterns and overlapping anatomical structures. This thesis investigates the use of multimodal deep learning techniques to assist in pul- monary fibrosis …

Pulmonary nocardiosis, a rare and diagnostically challenging infection, usually presents with heterogeneous radiographic findings, compounded by the low sensitivity of traditional confirmatory cultures. In their most recent work, Wang et al analyzed 102 patients with pulmonary nocardiosis to address these concerns, investigating species-characteristic imaging patterns, pathological associations, and the role of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnostic approach. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) in adult patients with pulmonary infections caused by Nocardia wallacei was demonstrated to have a sensitive (85.71%) and specific (83.34%) presentation of bronchopneumonia in relation to the five Nocardia species in the sample with CT data. The …

The gut-brain axis is increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis, yet the therapeutic impact of microbiota modulation remains unclear due to lack of clinical trials in drug-naïve patients. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of repeated donor fecal microbiota transplantation (dFMT) in de novo PD. FMT was administered for seven days (200 mL on days 1-3; 50 mL on days 4-7) per 4-week cycle. Seventy-two patients were randomized 1:1 to receive dFMT or autologous FMT (aFMT), and 66 completed the trial. At 35 weeks, the …

Background: Radiotherapy planning traditionally requires a dedicated simulation CT (sCT), which can introduce delays in initiating treatment. This is particularly impactful in spinal palliative care, where timely treatment is often important for symptom control and prevention of neurological deterioration. Although diagnostic CT (dCT) is frequently available earlier in the workflow, it can lead to geometric and dosimetric inaccuracies when used directly for treatment planning due to discrepancies in patient positioning, vertebral alignment, and table curvature.
Purpose: To develop and evaluate an AI-based method that transforms dCT into a simulation-equivalent planning CT (AI-pCT), enabling a clinically feasible simulation-free workflow for spinal …

Multiplanar First-Ray Deformity And Its Impact On Tibial Sesamoid Assessment: A Radiographic Analysis, Yasim Zafar, Madelaine Adkins, Jessica Sima
School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research
This study evaluated whether discrepancies in tibial sesamoid position (TSP) between anteroposterior (AP) and sesamoid axial radiographs are associated with first-ray deformity parameters: first metatarsal rotation angle (MRA), sesamoid rotation angle (SRA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and hallux valgus angle (HVA). We hypothesized that increased frontal-plane external rotation of the first metatarsal would be the primary contributor to AP–axial TSP mismatch.
This secondary analysis used deidentified radiographs from Shibuya et al. (J Foot Ankle Surg. 2019). Adults aged 18–80 with measurable TSP on both AP and axial views were included; patients with prior foot trauma or osseous surgery were excluded. Only …

Introduction: Current efforts to provide language-inclusive radiological care fall short, resulting in suboptimal imaging, increased procedural time, and greater radiation exposure. Inadequate language accessibility results in poor communication, suboptimal care, and increased patient dissatisfaction. A digital language tool was developed to provide patient instructions during interventional radiology (IR) procedures, addressing this gap and enhancing patient care.
Methods: Observations were carried out to better understand workflow during IR procedures and identify how to incorporate the tool. We conducted interviews with IR physicians, nurses, and technologists to gather common procedural phrases and patient instructions. Spanish and Mandarin were selected because they are …

Up to 75% of patients with advanced metastatic disease experience excruciating pain that affects their daily life. We elaborate on a case of a 63-year-old male with Stage IV squamous cell lung carcinoma with advanced osseous metastatic lesions who presented with symptoms of ambulatory dysfunction due to a lesion in the right acetabulum. This case report demonstrates how radiofrequency ablation can offer pain relief through meticulous ablation of a metastatic lesion without the necessity and negative side effects of external beam radiation.

Postoperative infections remain a major complication after spinal fusion surgery, often caused by biofilm-forming bacteria that resist short-term antibiotic prophylaxis. Vancomycin (VAN) is sometimes delivered locally during surgery; however, levels diminish rapidly, leaving patients vulnerable to late-onset infections. We developed a composite hydrogel integrating perfluorohexane-based emulsions within alginate or fibrin matrices to enable both sustained and ultrasound-triggered VAN release. Water-in-oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using fluorosurfactant-stabilized perfluorohexane as the volatile oil phase, then embedded in hydrogels and exposed to ultrasound (2.5 MHz, 5.5 MPa peak negative pressure) to initiate acoustic droplet vaporization for triggered release. Drug release was quantified spectrophotometrically and …

Context: Reliable prediction of space radiation exposure is critical for safeguarding spacecraft systems and ensuring astronaut health during missions. Accurate radiation risk assessment for space mission requires advanced models of the Earth’s trapped proton environment. These models must reflect temporal variations driven by geomagnetic field evolution and solar cycle modulation. Existing static models, such as AP8 and IRENE-AP9, are not designed to fully capture these evolving conditions. Aims: This paper presents a dynamic modeling method for the prediction of trapped proton fluxes, which incorporate time-dependent variations due to geomagnetic field evolution and solar cycle fluctuations. Methods: The …

Electrons in matter can rearrange extremely quickly under external perturbations, underpinning subsequent structural and chemical transformations. Coulomb interactions between neighbouring electrons often shape this response, giving rise to correlated motion and strongly affecting the distribution of electrons in the system. Here we show that non-resonant hard X-ray scattering can directly access changes in the radial electron-pair density during the rapid rearrangement of core and valence electrons. We do this by studying sulfur hexafluoride molecules undergoing Auger–Meitner decay. We exploit a second-order interaction between the X-ray photons and the molecules to trigger and probe the decay dynamics with a single pulse, …

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that does not use ionizing radiation. Instead, MRI uses magnetic fields, gradience, coils, and radio frequency to provide anatomic and physiologic information. The purpose of the research study is to examine the strengths and weaknesses of a 1.5 tesla to a 3-tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Cross sectional images are produced to better visualize muscles, organs, and soft tissues for diagnostic purposes. MRI screening and safety is a crucial part of the modality. The most common magnetic strength used for clinical diagnosis are 1.5 and 3 teslas. The higher the strength …

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in infants remains a therapeutic challenge. In preclinical studies we previously identified bortezomib and vorinostat as active agents against KMT2A rearranged (KMT2Ar) leukaemia. The aim of this study was to determine the tolerability of incorporating bortezomib and vorinostat into an acute lymphoblastic leukaemia-chemotherapy backbone for newly diagnosed infants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia both with and without KMT2Ar.
Methods: In this single-arm phase 1/2 study conducted at 18 hospitals in the USA and Canada, we enrolled patients aged 1 year or younger at the time of diagnosis with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia or undifferentiated leukaemia (with …
A Framework For Digital Energy Modulation And Translation In Projectional X-Ray Imaging, Richard R. Wargo
A Framework For Digital Energy Modulation And Translation In Projectional X-Ray Imaging, Richard R. Wargo
Theses and Dissertations
In projectional X-ray imaging, acquisition energy fundamentally influences subject contrast, image noise, and radiation dose. While dual-energy techniques exploit spectral differences to optimize contrast and enable material separation, acquiring multiple images of the same anatomy often requires additional exposures and increased system complexity.
This dissertation presents a framework for digital energy modulation (DEM), in which computational models are trained to translate projection images between energy domains without requiring additional X-ray acquisitions. DEM is conceived as a generalizable strategy for controlled contrast modulation in projection imaging, with potential applications in image optimization, radiation therapy alignment, and dual-energy applications.
The framework was …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Improving Prostate Cancer Patients’ Experience and Understanding With a Pre-CT Simulation Checklist in Genitourinary Radiation Oncology
Purpose
The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to implement a Pre-CT Simulation checklist for Prostate cancer patients in the outpatient Radiation Oncology Genitourinary clinic to improve patients’ experience and comprehension on their Simulation Day.
Background
The CT simulation is a critical step in treatment planning. Lack of clear, concise, consistent instruction and education preparation prior to simulation day can delay planning and treatment. Currently, there is no standardized checklist to ensure patients are educated and prepared for their CT simulation day. …

BACKGROUND: Stroke leads to complex chronic structural and functional brain changes that specifically affect motor outcomes. The brain predicted age difference (PAD) has emerged as a sensitive biomarker of both sensorimotor and cognitive function after stroke. Our previous study showed a higher global brain PAD associated with poorer motor function after stroke. However, the association between local stroke lesion load, regional brain age, and motor impairment is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between focal lesion damage, regional brain PAD in both hemispheres, and motor outcomes in chronic stroke, and to identify key predictors of motor impairment.
