UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Lateral cephalometric radiographs have been used for years to help diagnose skeletal and dental patterns in Orthodontics. Within the last decade, these radiographs have caught the interest of the department of Anthropology for the identification of gender within the adult and adolescent population. Numerous publications have been made but failed to identify sexual dimorphism in the pre-adolescent population. 303 lateral cephalograms of pre and post Latino adolescence age ranging from 6.5 to 17.9 years old were obtained from University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) digital database. 25 variables were identified and plotted with all linear and angular measurements transferred into …
Scanned Ion Beam Therapy For Thoracic Tumors, John Gordon Eley
Scanned Ion Beam Therapy For Thoracic Tumors, John Gordon Eley
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Although frequently cured of Hodgkin lymphoma, adolescents and young adults can develop radiation induced second cancers. These patients could potentially benefit from scanned ion radiotherapy yet likely would require motion mitigation strategies. In theory, four-dimensional (4D) optimization of ion beam fields for individual motion states of respiration can enable superior sparing of healthy tissue near moving targets, compared to other motion mitigation strategies. Furthermore, carbon-ion therapy can sometimes provide greater relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell sterilization in a target but nearly equivalent RBE in tissue upstream of the target, compared to proton therapy. Thus, we expected that for some …

Hirayama Disease is a disease of young adults lying in the age group between twenty to thirty years. It is an extremely uncommon disorder. Its other synonyms are juvenile muscular atrophy of the distal upper extremity (JMADUE) or monomelic amyotrophy (MMA). A previously healthy 25-year-old man presented with gradually increasing weakness in both hands for the past few years. There was neither history of trauma nor family history of neuromuscular disease. MRI was advised. Routine cervical sagittal MR images (Non-flexion or extension) revealed cord flattening and atrophy at C5 to C7 levels. There was evidence of syrinx. Flexion MRI was performed …

An Unsuspected Bleeding Meckel's Diverticulum In An Adult Detected On Mesenteric Angiography, Muhammad Ali, Raza Sayani, Muhammad Azeemuddin, Tanveer-Ul-Haq, Rizwan Khan
Department of Radiology
Meckel's diverticulum is usually asymptomatic and found in almost 2% of the population. Haemorrhage from a Meckel's diverticulum is common in children but rare in adults. Here we report a case of 20 years old male with recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding. Meckel's diverticulum was diagnosed due to abnormal vascularity on mesenteric angiography and embolization was performed. Diagnosis was correlated with other radiological imaging and later elective resection was performed. This case is reported to emphasize the potential role of mesenteric angiography in the detection and management of bleeding Meckel's diverticulum and correlation with other radiological imaging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Administration of radiopharmaceuticals through intravenous and oral routes is the major source of radiation exposure to nuclear medicine (NM) technologists. Adopting new strategies to minimize radiation exposure is an important step toward safe practice in nuclear pharmacy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
We have indigenously developed a relatively close delivery system for oral administration of radioiodine-131 ((131)I) to minimize radiation exposure to the technologists.
RESULTS:
The efficacy of this indigenously developed close system was assessed upon 23 patients who were given (131)I therapies for benign (13 patients) and malignant thyroid disorders (10 patients). There was 64 ± 6% (P < 0.05) reduction in exposure rate using indigenously developed delivery system.

Two-dimensional (2D) positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) are used for diagnosis and evaluation of cancer patients, requiring surgeons to look through multiple planar images to comprehend the tumor and surrounding tissues. We hypothesized that experienced surgeons would consistently evaluate three-dimensional (3D) presentation of CT images overlaid with PET images when preparing for a procedure. We recruited six Jefferson surgeons to evaluate the accuracy, usefulness, and applicability of 3D renderings of the organs surrounding a malignant pancreas prior to surgery. PET/CT and contrast-enhanced CT abdominal scans of a patient with a ductal pancreatic mass were segmented into 3D …

Body Mri Artifacts In Clinical Practice: A Physicist's And Radiologist's Perspective., Martin J Graves, Donald Mitchell
Body Mri Artifacts In Clinical Practice: A Physicist's And Radiologist's Perspective., Martin J Graves, Donald Mitchell
Department of Radiology Faculty Papers
The high information content of MRI exams brings with it unintended effects, which we call artifacts. The purpose of this review is to promote understanding of these artifacts, so they can be prevented or properly interpreted to optimize diagnostic effectiveness. We begin by addressing static magnetic field uniformity, which is essential for many techniques, such as fat saturation. Eddy currents, resulting from imperfect gradient pulses, are especially problematic for new techniques that depend on high performance gradient switching. Nonuniformity of the transmit radiofrequency system constitutes another source of artifacts, which are increasingly important as magnetic field strength increases. Defects in …

Marine-Lenhart Harboring Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Brian Y. Chou, Md, Sharon Segal, Do, Edmund A. Pribitkin, Md, Jeffery L. Miller, Md
Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Presentations and Grand Rounds
Introduction
Graves' disease with functioning nodules is referred to as Marine-Lenhart Syndrome. Only 2.7% of the patients with Graves’disease have concomitant functioning nodules.1 Thyroid scintigraphy often definitively confirms the diagnosis. However, in addition to a hyperfunctioning (i.e. "hot") nodule, the thyroid scan may reveal isofunctioning (i.e. "warm"), and or a nonfuntioning (i.e. "cold") nodule as compared to the normal surrounding thyroid. Since hyperfuntioning nodules rarely harbor malignancy, if one is found that corresponds to the nodule in question, no cytologic evaluation is usually necessary.2 Conversely, the majority of all nonfunctioning nodules may be benign or less frequently malignant, …

Hepatic Artery Pseudoaneurysm Mimicking Mirizzi Syndrome, Zahid Anwar, Raza Sayani, Darakshan Kanwal, Mohammed Ali, Mohammed Anwar Saeed
Department of Radiology
Acute cholecystitis leading to development of a pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery is a very rare complication; however, a pseudoaneurysm resulting in gallbladder neck compression with dilatation of intrahepatic duct giving a Mirizzi syndrome like presentation is virtually unreported to the best of our knowledge. We report a case of a 60 years male patient who presented in emergency department with right hypochondrial pain and mild jaundice. Initial diagnosis of hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm causing compression of neck of gallbladder and common bile duct was made on ultrasound examination. This was resulting in gross distention of gallbladder and mild dilatation of …

A 60 year old male arrived at the emergency department after losing consciousness. CT showed he demonstrated a right hemispheric embolic stroke with a middle cerebral artery distribution. Upon further investigation, the patient was found to have a right common carotid artery aneurysm that extended about 1 cm from the carotid bifurcation into the internal carotid artery. The patient underwent carotid artery reconstruction with the use of his right great saphenous vein.
This case demonstrates an unusual form of cerebral embolization due to a internal carotid artery aneurysm.

Physical Activity And Exercise During Adolescence And Young Adulthood Can Act As Preventative Measures Against The Development Of Osteoporosis In Elderly People, Christine C. Center
Honors College Theses
Osteoporosis, “the silent killer,” is responsible for 8.9 million annual fractures. Although not bound to these factors, osteoporosis typically targets females that are post-menopausal and have a family history of the disease. Osteoporosis is caused by a decrease in bone mass density. Physical activity and exercise and often spoken about when the topic of osteoporosis is discussed because of the impact they have on maintaining bone mass density in an effort to delay osteoporosis. This paper first provides an overview of osteoporosis, explanation of methods of diagnosing osteoporosis, risk factors, complications and treatment for osteoporosis. Topics covered include, bone mass …

Prostate Specific Antigen As A Risk Factor For Skeletal Metastases In Black African Men With Prostate Cancer, Ayman Mahmood Qureshi
Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Background: Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers in men worldwide. Several recognised risk factors are associated with this disease, amongst them, race. Despite this, there is a paucity of data in the native African setting. The skeletal system is a common site of metastasis, its incidence increasing with increase in prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels. Bone scans are used to detect skeletal metastases. Its use in prostate cancer patients with abnormal but low PSA has been subject of debate. Objectives: To test the association of PSA levels with skeletal metastasis in men with histologically proven prostate cancer. Methodology: …
