Long single-stranded DNAs and RNAs possess considerable secondary structure under conditions that support stable hybrid formation with oligonucleotides. Consequently, different oligomeric probes can hybridize to the same target with efficiencies that vary by several orders of magnitude. The ability to enzymatically generate structure-free single-stranded copies of any nucleic acid without impairing Watson-Crick base pairing to short probes would eliminate this problem and significantly improve the performance of many oligonucleotide-based applications. Synthetic nucleic acids that exhibit these properties are defined as pseudo-complementary. Locus of control (LOC) describes an individual’s generalized beliefs or expectancies that their reinforcements are under internal versus external control (1). An individual exhibits either an internal or external LOC. This study examines the link between LOC and selected health risk factors in adolescents. A convenience sample of 167 high school physical education students completed a 13-item LOC questionnaire based on Rotter’s 1966 instrument.

Background: Electroencephalogram based studies done elsewhere suggest that epileptiform activity originates predominantly from the left cortical hemisphere. There is evidence that partial epilepsies (focal spike and wave epileptiform discharges on tracings) connotes focal;secondary structural cortical dysfunction.Studies seeking similar findings have not been done locally.

Objective: To review electroencephalograms (BEGs) done at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH); looking for various types of epileptiform discharges and their cerebral cortex of origin.

Design: Retrospective observational study.

Setting: Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya- from January 1986 to June 2004

Hiv, Hepatitis B And Hepatitis C Coinfection In Kenya, Reena Shah, Jane Karuru, Mark Nelson, Justin Stebbing

There are few data regarding hepatitis and HIV coinfection in Africa. In 378 HIV seropositive individuals in Nairobi, 23 (6%) were hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV coinfected, four (1%) were hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV coinfected and one patient was infected with all three viruses. Coinfected individuals were more likely to be men and older; a lack of HBV vaccination was a risk factor for HIV/HBV coinfection (PU0.001) and tenofovir containing regimens appeared most effective at reducing HBV viral load.

Background: Albuminuria is long recognised as a sign of renal disease in diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, renal disease occurs after a longer duration of diabetic state. In type 2 diabetes, it is more variable.

Objective: To determine the prevalence and any risk factors of albuminuria in short­ term (≤2 yrs) type 2 diabetes.

Design: Cross sectional, descriptive study. Microalbuminuria was assessed using micro II strips.

Setting: Outpatient diabetic clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi.

Subjects: Patients who were newly diagnosed or had had type 2 diabetes for two years or less.

A secondary TRAM flap was prefabricated in a rat model using the rectus muscle. The right rectus muscle was elevated as an inferiorly pedicled muscle flap in one experimental group (n = 6) and as a superiorly pedicled muscle flap in a second group (n = 5) and then sandwiched between a silicone sheet and the abdominal skin. Two weeks later, the abdominal skin and attached rectus muscle were elevated over the silicone sheet as a secondary TRAM flap. Noise Induced Hearing Loss, R Moulds

Most farmers have heard about noise induced hearing loss and many take sensible precautions. But a significant number of farmers still find some excuse for not wearing ear-muffs of using protective devices to conserve their hearing when exposed to loud noise.

This article describes the nature of the problem and states the reasons why hearing protection should be used whenever exposure to loud noise is unavoidable, especially when driving a tractor.
