Upon visiting the UCC, these patients report life-threatening symptoms; hence require immediate medical attention. Objective:

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) in spinal cord injury (SCI) can present as hyperhidrosis due to sudomotor dysfunction. Hyperhidrosis can also occur without an identifiable etiology. There are no standard treatment guidelines for refractory hyperhidrosis in the setting of persistent noxious stimulation. Stellate ganglion blockade may prevent hyperhidrosis by inhibiting profound sympathetic surge and vasoconstriction.

Case:

58-year-old female with C7 ASIA-A quadriplegia was admitted to the hospital for episodes of profuse sweating in the setting of autonomic dysreflexia secondary to underlying T7-8 discitis. Despite therapeutic interventions for glioblastoma (GBM), cancer stem cells (CSCs) drive recurrence. The precise mechanisms underlying CSC resistance, namely inhibition of cell death, are unclear. We built on previous observations that the high cell surface expression of junctional adhesion molecule-A drives CSC maintenance and identified downstream signaling networks, including the cysteine protease inhibitor SerpinB3. Using genetic depletion approaches, we found that SerpinB3 is necessary for CSC maintenance, survival, and tumor growth, as well as CSC pathway activation. Knockdown of SerpinB3 also increased apoptosis and susceptibility to radiation therapy. SerpinB3 was essential to buffer cathepsin L-mediated cell death, which was enhanced …

The prevalence of liver disease is steadily increasing, coupled with the limited availability of therapeutic treatments. Recent literature points to metabolic reprogramming as a key feature of liver failure. Hence, we sought to uncover the metabolic pathways and mechanisms associated with liver disease and acute liver failure. We generated patient-specific genome scale metabolic models by integrating RNA-seq data from patient liver samples with a generalized human metabolic model. Flux balance analysis simulations showed a distinct separation of non-alcohol associated and alcohol-associated disease states. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome is a life-threatening condition associated with elevated inflammatory markers and multiple organ injury. A diagnosis of exclusion, it has been reported after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection (SARS-CoV-2) in children and adults; recently it has been described in some post-COVID-19 vaccinated individuals. The prognosis with supportive care and immunomodulatory therapy is good, although some individuals may require treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). Background: On average, patients experience one to seven problems post-hospital discharge leading to increased unplanned emergency room visits, hospital readmission, and worse outcomes. The average cost of a single hospital admission is $15,477, an emergency room visit $1,389, and treatment for a surgical site infection $10,443-$25,546. Additionally, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) imposes fines on hospital systems with high readmission rates. Currently, the Southern California hospital this project was implemented at has a 15.5% hospital-wide unplanned 30-day readmission rate with a national average of 15.2%.

Complaints provide valuable information to consumers about nursing homes (NHs). Complaints that are substantiated often lead to an investigation and potentially a deficiency citation. In recent years, Nursing Home Quality data show mixed results. According to some Federal reports, one of the four data sets that measure residents’ quality of care in NHs, consumer complaints, suggest that residents’ concerns over quality have increased. Many Americans are dependent on or misuse prescription opioids. Increasing opioid misuse and opioid use disorder rates have led to record opioid-related deaths in recent years. Provider prescribing practices are one part of the problem. Evidence indicates that prescribers should assess for risks related to substance misuse and abuse in high-risk populations, such as patients on long-term opioid therapy. By evaluating risk level, the provider will have additional information to guide treatment decisions and a baseline for assessing future changes in risk status. Background: Research on professional quality of life (QOL) variables in healthcare providers proliferated following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence suggests that caregiving careers have positive and negative effects (Beck, 2011). Insufficient research describes these effects in respiratory therapists (RTs), a group of healthcare practitioners who often work in high-stress situations and provide care to high-acuity patient populations.

Purpose: To identify cataract surgery candidates’ knowledge, beliefs, desires and emotions as they relate to cataract surgery generally as well as to their behavioral intent to adhere to a doctor-recommended pre-surgical ocular surface prep routine designed to improve refractive outcomes and prevent surgical complications.

Methods: This national, noninterventional, cross-sectional, mixed methods survey included 278 US adults ages 65 and older with no history of cataract surgery in either eye.

Results: Only 20% of participants said they want to have cataract surgery, and even fewer (8%) said they wish they could have cataract surgery right away. Fear was the predominant emotion …

With an increasing number of individuals traveling to high altitudes, it is important to address the risk these individuals face of developing altitude related illnesses.
