Moderation Analysis Of Bowel Function Among Nutrients And Physical Function Or Depression, As Well As Whether Bowel Function Is Related To Cognition In Older Adults, Jessie Alwerdt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As we age, the risk for gut issues, such as smooth muscle tone, may be an underlying indirect or direct cause or risk factor for many age-related issues, such as frailty. Consequences of decreased motility and depleted epithelial barrier may result in nutrient deficiencies that may increase the risk for malnutrition (Brownie, 2006). Further, there is increasing evidence that there is a gut-brain-axis relationship that may influence cognition and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. While there are relationships established, the interconnections of these factors have yet to be fully understood.

This dissertation examined several relationships specific to …

Care Setting Of The Last Resort: Care Transitions For Nursing Home Residents Directly Admitted From The Community, Amanda A. Holup Jul 2016

Care Setting Of The Last Resort: Care Transitions For Nursing Home Residents Directly Admitted From The Community, Amanda A. Holup

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the late 1980s, policymakers have attempted to reduce the institutional bias of their long-term services and supports by investing in more accessible home and community-based services for older adults with long-term care needs and adults with disabilities. To further advance rebalancing discussions, this study examined the resident, facility, and state characteristics associated with the admission of community-dwelling older adults to the nursing home and the subsequent discharge of this population back to community settings. Data from the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 2.0 were used to construct episodes of care for all newly-admitted residents aged 65 and older to any …

Introduction

Transitions between inpatient and outpatient care and pediatric to adult care are associated with increased mortality for sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. As accurate and timely sharing of health information is essential during transitions, a health information technology (HIT)-enabled tool holds promise to improve care transitions.

Methods

From 2012 through 2014, the team conducted and analyzed data from an environmental scan, key informant interviews, and focus groups to inform the development of an HIT-enabled tool for SCD patients’ use during care transitions. The scan included searches of peer-reviewed and gray literature to understand SCD patient needs, transition concerns, and …

Using Instructions And Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Facebook Skills To Seniors, Alison Ann Oconnell Jun 2016

Using Instructions And Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Facebook Skills To Seniors, Alison Ann Oconnell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The senior population is growing faster than any other population group, and life expectancy is increasing. E-mail and social media enable people of all ages to stay in touch, and find information, resources, and entertainment. Positive effects are associated with computer and internet use for older adults, but not all seniors have embraced technology and some seniors feel negatively about it. Several different methods have been used to teach seniors computer skills, including mentoring, lecturing, and providing instructions, but not many procedures have been evaluated for effectiveness. In the current study, we recruited three to five seniors, taught them to …

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 entry is a receptor-mediated process directed by the interaction of the viral envelope with the host cell CD4 molecule and one of two co-receptors, CCR5 or CXCR4. The amino acid sequence of the third variable (V3) loop of the HIV-1 envelope is highly predictive of co-receptor utilization preference during entry, and machine learning predictive algorithms have been developed to characterize sequences as CCR5-utilizing (R5) or CXCR4-utilizing (X4). It was hypothesized that while the V3 loop is predominantly responsible for determining co-receptor binding, additional components of the HIV-1 genome may contribute to overall viral tropism and display sequence signatures …

Rural Disparities In Cancer Care: A Review Of Its Implications And Possible Interventions, Raj Singh, Lynne J. Goebel Md

Internal Medicine

Cancer care has greatly improved in the last few decades, as evidenced by a 22% decline in the overall cancer-related death rate in the United States since 1991. However, the question presents itself whether rural residents, for whom the latest advancements are not as accessible, are also realizing these benefits as much as their urban counterparts. The aim of this study is to provide are view of the literature regarding the disparities in cancer care facing rural Appalachia and specifically West Virginia (WV) as well as possible solutions towards bridging this gap. We find that WV has a higher cancer …

Ips Cell Transplantation For Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury., Miguel Goulao, Angelo C Lepore

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

A large body of work has been published on transplantation of a wide range of neural stem and progenitor cell types derived from the developing and adult CNS, as well as from pluripotent embryonic stem cells, in models of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). However, many of these cell-based approaches present practical issues for clinical translation such as ethical cell derivation, generation of potentially large numbers of homogenously prepared cells, and immune rejection. With the advent of induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cell technology, many of these issues may potentially be overcome. To date, a number of studies have demonstrated integration, …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Rapid response system (RRS) is a safety tool designed for early detection and intervention of a deteriorating patient on the general floor in the hospital. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with significant cardiovascular complications. We hypothesized that patients with high-risk of OSA have higher rate of RRS events and intervention with positive airway pressure therapy in these patients can mitigate the RRS events.

METHODS: As part of a clinical pathway, during a 15 month period, patients with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 in select medical services were screened with a validated sleep questionnaire. Patients were characterized as high …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Proper structural organization of spiral ganglion (SG) innervation is crucial for normal hearing function. However, molecular mechanisms underlying the developmental formation of this precise organization remain not well understood. Here, we report in the developing mouse cochlea that deleted in colorectal cancer (Dcc) contributes to the proper organization of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) within the Rosenthal's canal and of SGN projections toward both the peripheral and central auditory targets. In Dcc mutant embryos, mispositioning of SGNs occurred along the peripheral auditory pathway with misrouted afferent fibers and reduced synaptic contacts with hair cells. The central auditory pathway simultaneously exhibited similar …

Evaluation Of Polymorphic Locus Sequence Typing For Candida Glabrata Epidemiology., Santosh Katiyar, Eric Shiffrin, Md, Celeste Shelton, Kelley Healey, John-Paul Vermitsky, Tom Edlind

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The opportunistic yeastCandida glabratais increasingly refractory to antifungal treatment or prophylaxis and relatedly is increasingly implicated in health care-associated infections. To elucidate the epidemiology of these infections, strain typing is required. Sequence-based typing provides multiple advantages over length-based methods, such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE); however, conventional multilocus sequence typing (targeting 6 conserved loci) and whole-genome sequencing are impractical for routine use. A commercial sequence-based typing service forC. glabratathat targets polymorphic tandem repeat-containing loci has recently been developed. These CgMT-J and CgMT-M services were evaluated with 56 epidemiologically unrelated isolates, 4 to 7 fluconazole-susceptible or fluconazole-resistant isolates from each of …

Is Androgen Excess Masked In Alopecia Areata Patients: A Retrospective Data Analysis Of 1,587 Patients, G. Cheyana Ranasinghe, Melissa Piliang, Wilma Bergfeld

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Studies on the pathophysiology and comorbidities associated with alopecia areata (AA) are limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of androgen excess in AA and its subtypes, in relation to demographics and comorbidities. Medical records of 1,587 Patchy AA, AT, AU, and ophiasis patients seen in the Department of Dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio between 2005 and 2015 were reviewed. Out of this cohort, 226 patients met the inclusion criteria. There is evidence that patients with AA had significantly greater prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than the general population (p<0.001). Androgen excess was identified in 42.5% (n=96) of the 226 patients with AA or any subtype (p<0.001). The androgen excess group was significantly more likely to present with irregular menses, hirsutism, adult acne, PCOS, and/or ovarian cysts (p<0.001). This study was limited by being retrospective. Our study demonstrated that AA is associated with androgen excess.

Lambda Red-Mediated Recombineering In The Attaching And Effacing Pathogen Escherichia Albertii., Marisa Egan, Jasmine Ramirez, Christian Xander, Chirag Upreti, Shantanu Bhatt

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The ability to introduce site-specific mutations in bacterial pathogens is essential towards understanding their molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity. This has been greatly facilitated by the genetic engineering technique of recombineering. In recombineering, linear double- or single-stranded DNA molecules with two terminal homology arms are electroporated into hyperrecombinogenic bacteria that express a phage-encoded recombinase. The recombinase catalyzes the replacement of the endogenous allele with the exogenous allele to generate selectable or screenable recombinants. In particular, lambda red recombinase has been instrumental in engineering mutations to characterize the virulence arsenal of the attaching and effacing (A/E) pathogens enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), …

Neurocognitive Dysfunction In Brain Tumor Patients Following Radiation Therapy: A Review Of Biological Hypotheses, Current Treatment Outcomes, And Novel Therapeutic Strategies, Raj Singh

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Given the difficulty of surgical resection of brain neoplasms located adjacent to vital structures of the brain as well as the challenges posed by the blood-brain-barrier for the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents, whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) are often turned to for patients with brain metastases as well as primary brain neoplasms. Though radiation therapy may be successful in local control of these tumors, many patients experience treatment-related neurocognitive issues later in life. In this review, we examine cognitive dysfunction in brain tumor patients following radiation therapy, with an emphasis on the pediatric population. Articles were …

Cannibalism, Kuru, And Mad Cows: Prion Disease As A "Choose-Your-Own-Experiment" Case Study To Simulate Scientific Inquiry In Large Lectures., Antonio Serrano, Jeffrey Liebner, Justin K Hines

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Despite significant efforts to reform undergraduate science education, students often perform worse on assessments of perceptions of science after introductory courses, demonstrating a need for new educational interventions to reverse this trend. To address this need, we created An Inexplicable Disease, an engaging, active-learning case study that is unusual because it aims to simulate scientific inquiry by allowing students to iteratively investigate the Kuru epidemic of 1957 in a choose-your-own-experiment format in large lectures. The case emphasizes the importance of specialization and communication in science and is broadly applicable to courses of any size and sub-discipline of the life sciences.

Cloning And Transcriptional Activity Of The Mouse Omi/Htra2 Gene Promoter., Dan Liu, Xin Liu, Ye Wu, Wen Wang, Xin-Liang Ma, Huirong Liu

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

HtrA serine peptidase 2 (HtrA2), also named Omi, is a pro-apoptotic protein that exhibits dramatic changes in expression levels in a variety of disorders, including ischemia/reperfusion injury, cancer, and neurodegeneration. In our study, Omi/HtrA2 protein levels were high in the heart, brain, kidney and liver, with elevated heart/brain expression in aging mice. A similar expression pattern was observed at the mRNA level, which suggests that the regulation of Omi/HtrA2 is predominately transcriptional. Promoter binding by transcription factors is the main influencing factor of transcription, and to identify specific promoter elements that contribute to the differential expression of mouse Omi/HtrA2, we …

Reduction Of Ctrp9, A Novel Anti-Platelet Adipokine, Contributes To Abnormal Platelet Activity In Diabetic Animals., Wenqing Wang, Wayne Bond Lau, Yajing Wang, Xin-Liang Ma, Rong Li

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Platelet hyper-reactivity is a crucial cause of accelerated atherosclerosis increasing risk of thrombotic vascular events in diabetic patients. The mechanisms leading to abnormal platelet activity during diabetes are complex and not fully defined. The current study attempted to clarify the role of CTRP9, a novel adiponectin paralog, in enhanced platelet activity and determined whether CTRP9 may inhibit platelet activity. Adult male C57BL/6 J mice were randomized to receive high-fat diet (HFD) or normal diet (ND). 8 weeks after HFD, animals were sacrificed, and both plasma CTRP9 and platelet aggregation were determined. HFD-fed animals increased weight gain significantly, and became hyperglycemic …

Mobile Health Interventions For Adult Obesity In The United States: Analysis Of Effectiveness And Efficacy, David P. Paul Iii, Keerthi Gochipathala, Alberto Coustasse, Bezawit Wodajo, Niharika Bhardwaj

Management Faculty Research

The Unites States continues to struggle with the negative health effects associated with increasing population obesity, a problem which has been historically difficult, if not impossible, to solve. Mobile health applications represent a potential partial solution to this problem. We examine the existing literature on the effects of mobile health applications on body weight, waist circumference, BMI, and lifestyle, examining both physical findings as well as adherence, satisfaction and cost effectiveness. The use of mobile for weight reduction looks promising, but evidence is mixed, which is not surprising given the rapidly evolving nature of the mobile application field.

An Examination Of Quality Of Life Of Parents Of Adult Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christina Noel Marsack Jan 2016

An Examination Of Quality Of Life Of Parents Of Adult Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christina Noel Marsack

Wayne State University Dissertations

Previous research on parental caregivers has focused primarily on caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, rather than focusing specifically on parents of adult children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Most research on ASD has centered on parents of young children with this diagnosis, but not on parents of adult children with ASD. Understanding the experiences of parents caring for adult children with ASD is important given the increase in the prevalence of individuals with ASD and the lack of information regarding parents of adult children with ASD. A nonexperimental, quantitative, correlational design was used to examine effects …
