Hernandez, Yvette K. Cantu Cazares, Monica C. Perez, Yvette K. Cantu Cazares, Mayrin A. Perez
Research Symposium
Purpose: The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) faces significant socio-economic challenges, with 35.6% of residents living in poverty and uninsured rates as high as 40%. Each year, approximately 260,000 residents experience mild to moderate behavioral health conditions. Behavioral health care in the region is particularly scarce, with only 30.1 mental health providers per 100,000 compared to the statewide average of 72.7. Furthermore, approximately 90.5% of the population identifies as Hispanic/Latino, so culturally relevant interventions are critical. The Primary Care Behavioral Health Partnerships Advancing & Transforming Health Sciences (PCBH PATHS) Initiative addresses these disparities by 1) developing a PCBH model tailored to …

Evaluating The Effect Of Consumption Of Fermented Foods On Glycemic Control And Markers Of Cardiometabolic Risk Amongst Pre-Diabetic And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Adult Patients: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Alex Makau Muia
Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Introduction
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in resource limited countries where conventional treatments are often inaccessible or unaffordable. While lifestyle interventions can reduce diabetes risk, their efficacy is moderate, highlighting the need for alternative strategies. Fermented foods (FFs), which are widely available and affordable, have been shown to improve glucose metabolism and may offer a promising adjunct in the prevention and management of T2DM and prediabetes.
Methods
A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the effects of fermented food consumption on glycemic control and cardiometabolic risk markers in adults with prediabetes …

The Prevalence And The Predictors Of Diabetes Distress In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Attending Diabetes Clinics At A Tertiary Private Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya., Soulthy Azamkhan Mohamed
Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Background Diabetes distress encompasses a spectrum of emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals managing diabetes, including anxiety, stress, depression, frustration, and feelings of helplessness. This distress arises from the constant demands of monitoring blood sugar levels, managing medications, adhering to dietary restrictions, engaging in regular physical activity, and navigating potential complications. Social and emotional factors such as stigma, discrimination, and concerns about future health further contribute to this burden. Factors like fear of hypoglycemia, financial strain, fluctuating blood sugar levels, anxiety about complications, and impacts on personal relationships exacerbate diabetes distress. Left unaddressed, diabetes distress can lead to poor …

Guideline-recommended screening programs exist for only a few single-cancer types, and these cancers represent less than one-half of all new cancer cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. In addition, these "single-cancer" standard of care (SoC) screening tests vary in accuracy, adherence, and effectiveness, though all are generally understood to lead to reductions in cancer-related mortality. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies and machine learning have facilitated the development of blood-based multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests. The opportunity for early detection of multiple cancers with a single blood test holds promise in addressing the current unmet need in cancer screening. By …

Journal of Appalachian Health
The establishment of a student-run mobile clinic in Morehead, Kentucky, led by students from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s (UKCOM) Rural Physician Leadership Program (RPLP), aims to address health inequities in rural Appalachian communities. This pilot program is designed to serve vulnerable populations, including the unhoused, by delivering free, accessible healthcare services directly to underserved populations. This program serves as a model for expanding access to healthcare in rural regions while promoting a collaborative, community-based approach to addressing social determinants of health.
Implementation Of Endometriosis Toolkit: A Quality Improvement Project To Enhance Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Management, Hasbun Rachel
Implementation Of Endometriosis Toolkit: A Quality Improvement Project To Enhance Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Management, Hasbun Rachel
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Abstract
Background: Endometriosis, characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial-like tissue, affects approximately 11% of reproductive-aged women in the United States. Diagnosing endometriosis is challenging due to its diverse clinical presentations, reliance on laparoscopic procedures, absence of biomarkers, and limited awareness among healthcare providers and patients.
Local Problem: The diagnostic complexity of endometriosis, compounded by reduced provider awareness and a lack of comprehensive resources, leads to delayed and suboptimal care for affected women.
Methods: This Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project aimed to enhance nurse practitioners’ (NPs) knowledge and management of endometriosis through a 1-hour educational session at the …

Perspectives On A Recently Merged Family Medicine Residency Program: A Post-Match Survey Of Ranked, Unmatched Applicants, John E. Snellings, Karo G. Ohanian, Ismail El Moudden
Eastern Virginia Medical Journal
Introduction: Residency program mergers are a topic of much consternation and relatively little scholarly investigation in graduate medical education. After undergoing a residency merger in July 2020, the newly formed Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Family Medicine Residency Program investigated the effects of the merger on the perspectives of the applicant pool for the subsequent 2020–2021 recruiting season. Methods: We conducted an anonymous survey of EVMS Family Medicine applicants during the 2020– 2021 recruiting season. Students who interviewed with the residency and were subsequently placed on the program’s National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) rank order list (ROL) but did not …

Moud 2.0: A Clinical Algorithm And Implementation Evaluation Protocol For Sublingual And Injectable Buprenorphine Treatment Of Opioid Use Disorder, Brandon Joa, Eric Fung, Michael Weinstein, Lara Weinstein
Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Primary care is the initial contact point for most patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) but lacks tools for guiding treatment. Only a small fraction of patients access evidence-based care. Long-acting injectable buprenorphine has potential to improve medication adherence and program retention in low-barrier primary care treatment settings. We present the first clinical decision support algorithm incorporating long-acting buprenorphine (LAIB) in primary care. We include a protocol for a future evaluation of the algorithm's implementation process, "Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) 2.0," at a housing and integrated care clinic at a Federally Qualified Health Center.
METHODS: Literature review …

Introduction: Persistent racial and ethnic disparities exist for Type 2 diabetes in the U.S. Racial and ethnic minorities have a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, and studies suggest that they engage in less exercise than White population. This study examined whether and to what degree racial differences in Type 2 diabetes were explained by exercise. Methods: Adults aged 45–84 years without Type 2 diabetes at baseline (2000–2002) were included from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis cohort and followed through 2020. Associations between race and Type 2 diabetes were examined using multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression. The effects of exercise …

Shortness Of Breath In A 39 Year Old: A Rare Case Of Heart Failure, Mohammed Rashik, Olufunmilola Adeleye, Jason Thompson, Tasaduq Mir
North Texas Research Forum 2025
Currently, 2.6% of Americans suffer from heart failure. Common causes include coronary artery disease, chronic hypertension, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction, often managed in clinical and hospital settings. A rare cause, however, is infiltrative cardiomyopathy, affecting just 0.04% of the U.S. population. This condition, often caused by amyloid buildup or sarcoidosis, is challenging to diagnose and typically requires a heart transplant due to its rapid progression. Thorough investigations into heart failure causes are crucial to identify this rare condition. A 39-year-old male with no significant medical history presented to the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Family Medicine clinic …

Implementing Intermittent Fasting Education For Improved A1c Control In Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Dakota Dalton, Elizabeth White, Malinda Hansen, Tasaduq Mir
North Texas Research Forum 2025
Background: Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in the UNTHSC Family Medicine clinic varies among residents, with some advocating robust lifestyle counseling and others relying more on medical management. This leads to inconsistencies in patient education and treatment strategies. Lifestyle interventions such as dietary modifications, are unfortunately too often underutilized in the clinic and in primary care in general, despite strong evidence supporting their efficacy in control of both A1C measurements and random fasting blood sugar, and improved prognosis of diabetes. To address this, we have designed and introduced an intermittent fasting (IF) handout as a supplemental standardized educational …

North Texas Research Forum 2025
Background Patients rely on durable medical equipment (DME) to maintain their independence, however supplying and ordering DME for patients is challenging due to lack of a clear workflow, inadequate documentation, and differing coverage criteria, which has led to delays in patients receiving their DME. Current criteria to order DME include the following items: equipment description, quantity, length of need (estimate), diagnosis, recent height and weight, name, date of birth, home address, insurance company and member ID. The objective of this quality improvement project is to provide a clear and concise template for providers to use in ordering DME. Methods The …

Humoral Influences On The Heart: A Case Of Overt Hypothyroidism And Dilated Cardiomyopathy With Acute Heart Failure, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Rui Zhang, Brian Yu, Tasaduq Mir
North Texas Research Forum 2025
BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) affects approximately 7 in 100,000 adults annually, with a mortality rate of 50%. It is typically idiopathic, progressive, and irreversible. However, in the context of hypothyroidism, DCM can be reversible. Hypothyroid-induced DCM with coexisting systolic dysfunction is a rare occurrence. This case report presents an exceptional instance of this phenomenon, highlighting the critical role of thyroid hormone replacement in improving patient outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old female with a medical history of hypothyroidism (post-thyroidectomy) was transferred for higher-level care due to new-onset heart failure. Over the past five months, she experienced worsening dyspnea on exertion, fatigue, …

Background: Residency is defined by constant change. The expectations, specialty, preceptor teaching styles and varied knowledge sets needed for each rotation differ greatly. As a result, residents are forced to adapt their learning styles quickly, to ensure they optimize the small amount of time allotted to them. Multiple studies have shown the high levels of stress, depression, anxiety and impostor syndrome that run rampant throughout medical learners, residents included. Our residency program has recently started a new obstetrics rotation with many requirements still unknown. This study evaluates the efficacy of the update to the “The Intern Survival Handbook” in mitigating …
