Assessment Of Patient Satisfaction Through The Introduction Of A Post-Procedure Pamphlet In An Outpatient Clinic, Mohammad Rashik, James Aston, Sajid Surve

North Texas Research Forum 2025

This quality improvement project aimed to create a patient pamphlet for the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) clinic at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. The pamphlet provides important post-procedure information for patients who undergo treatments like joint injections, platelet-rich plasma therapy, prolotherapy, hydrodissection, botulinum toxin injection, and nerve blocks. These procedures can lead to potential side effects, some of which patients may not be aware of. To address this, the pamphlet includes information on common symptoms, their causes, recommended next steps, and guidance on when to contact the OMM clinic or visit the Emergency Department. The pamphlet was …

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: Disseminated fusarium, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals, is associated with persistent fevers, rash, and lung involvement. Despite interventions, mortality rate remains high, exceeding 75% for disseminated disease. There are only 26 documented cases worldwide between 1974 and 2022 with CNS involvement. This case highlights a rare presentation of disseminated fusarium infection involving the lungs, liver, and brain in a 53-year-old male with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), highlighting critical diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Case Presentation: A 53-year-old male with a history of APL with PML/RARA fusion t (15,17) after chemotherapy presented with persistent fevers, rash, encephalopathy, and severe sepsis while undergoing …

An Evaluation Of The Decline In Primary Care Physician Visits, 2010 To 2021, Anuradha Jetty, Marie Ezran, Alison Huffstetler, Yalda Jabbarpour

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Primary care is the backbone of the United States healthcare system, yet it continues to be underfunded and inaccessible to many. Previous studies explored primary care visit patterns until 2016, leaving gaps in our understanding of how recent factors like state Medicaid expansions, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and population growth have influenced these patterns. Hence, the objective of the current study was to analyze the trends in primary care visits provided by outpatient clinicians over time and by visit type and contextualize study findings within the changing healthcare landscape.

METHODS: The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2010-2021) …

Improving Glucose Levels In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Kaitlin Castillo Jan 2025

Improving Glucose Levels In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Kaitlin Castillo

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Type 2 diabetes is a growing health crisis, posing significant challenges not only to individual well-being but also to healthcare systems' financial sustainability. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to rise annually, contributing to increased medical costs, hospitalizations, and long-term complications. Houston, Texas, has a diabetes prevalence of 13.5%, exceeding the national average of 10%. A clinical gap exists in providers’ ability to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes. Prioritizing prevention, early intervention, and improved patient monitoring can reduce incidence rates, lower healthcare costs, and enhance overall population health. A Plan Do Study Act model was utilized for the …

Bundled Approach To Improve Colorectal Cancer In Primary Care, Elizabeth Reddiar Jan 2025

Bundled Approach To Improve Colorectal Cancer In Primary Care, Elizabeth Reddiar

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Abstract

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, despite being preventable through timely screening. National guidelines recommend regular screening for adults aged 45 to 75; (American cancer Society (ACS), 2025) however, screening rates remain suboptimal, particularly in primary care settings serving diverse and high-volume populations. Local Problem: At the project site, a community-oriented primary care clinic in North Texas, baseline data revealed CRC screening completion rates were below benchmarks set by the organization. Barriers included limited patient awareness, inconsistent provider reminders, and workflow challenges in distributing and tracking fecal immunochemical test …

Influence Of Perceived Health Provider Communication, Diabetes Duration And Age At Diagnosis With Confidence In Diabetes Self-Care, Courtney L. Ortz, Meredith S. Duncan, Oluwatosin Leshi, William B. Burrows, Brittany L. Smalls

Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Several factors influence individuals’ confidence to perform diabetes-related self-care activities, including perceived patient-provider communication, diabetes duration and age at diagnosis. It has been well-documented that patient-provider communication is essential when managing chronic diseases such as diabetes; however, the impact of this communication with diabetes duration and age at diabetes diagnosis on confidence in performing self-care behaviors is obscure.

Research design and methods: We utilized data from the 2021 Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Survey among participants 18 years or older who had completed the Diabetes Care Survey. Ordinal logistic regression models were utilized to assess the association between …

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: School nurses are on the front lines of assessing, identifying and treating school-age children with a number of health complications. Implementing nursing services in schools has previously demonstrated improved medical care costs for students, less productivity loss for parents, and less productivity loss for teachers. As a result, nursing services in schools provide a cost-beneficial investment of public money, and warrant both financial support from policy makers as well as educational support from local healthcare services. Aim Statement: This quality improvement project addressed the targeted continuing education gap topics of Dermatology and Diabetes management in school age children. Methods: …

Improving The Diabetic Foot Screening Process And Foot Care Patient Education In A Primary Care Setting, Keelie Tillett Jan 2025

Improving The Diabetic Foot Screening Process And Foot Care Patient Education In A Primary Care Setting, Keelie Tillett

DNP Projects

Background: Foot ulcerations are a common diabetes-associated complication that can lead to significant morbidity, mortality, and financial burden for patients and health care systems. Health care providers (HCPs) play an important role in providing diabetic foot care. Despite national guidelines recommending HCPs perform an annual foot exam in all individuals with diabetes to recognize at-risk feet, research shows that many patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) do not receive routine diabetic foot exams (DFE) in the primary care setting.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of provider education, a standardized DFE template, an electronic health record (EHR) alert, and online educational …

Department of Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered the format of residency recruitment, leading to the widespread adoption of virtual interviews, followed by the adoption of preference signaling. This study examines how the structure of the 2023-2024 interview season influenced family medicine residency program directors' intentions for future interview formats and their preferences regarding the number of preference signals.

Methods: A Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance survey, including demographic questions, was distributed to all family medicine residency program directors in the United States in spring 2024. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, cross-tabulations, χ² tests, and multivariable logistic …
