Barriers To Care For Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Southern New Jersey, Gabriela Taslitsky, Hijab Zaidi, Nafisa Zalil
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a spectrum of clinical manifestations seen in newborns due to withdrawal secondary to intrauterine illicit and/or prescription drug exposure. Newborns with NAS present with common signs of withdrawal such as poor feeding, irritability, seizures, hypertonicity, low birth weight, loose stool, and premature birth. Maternal opioid use is the most common cause of NAS and with the increase in opioid use in the past decade the cases of NAS have also increased. This study examines the prevalence and challenges associated with NAS in Southern New Jersey. Our analysis reveals that Atlantic and Gloucester counties reported the …

On Death And Disease: How Physicians’ Perspectives Compare Across Specialties Through Written Work, Stephanie Anne C. Alkonga
Honors Capstones
Narrative medicine is a tool that the medical field is increasingly utilizing to cultivate patient-centered and culturally competent doctors and to reflect on lived experiences through texts that focus on psychosocial best practices. This study aims to examine the language used in physician-written works that address how physicians in different medical specialties treat the aging and the terminally ill, and how they view the deceased. Qualitative data guided by thematic questions will primarily be used in the analysis and comparison of these texts’ tone, rhetoric, diction, and similar literary devices to uncover if certain patterns arise across such specialties. Findings …

Produce Prescription Policy Project For The Securement Of A Grant To Address Food Insecurity For Low-Income Type Ii Diabetic Patients, Isabel D. Garcia-Gallegos
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
PURPOSE
This policy-focused Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement (QI) project aims to secure grant funding through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) to implement a produce prescription program at a community clinic in Texas. The program targets low-income adults (18-65 years) with type II diabetes who experience food insecurity and are affected by Medicaid non-expansion.
BACKGROUND
Texas’ decision not to expand Medicaid has exacerbated food insecurity among low-income residents, particularly those managing type II diabetes. This decision creates a healthcare policy gap that this project aims to address with a food-as-medicine program.
METHODOLOGY
Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) …

The State Of Abortion Training In Medical School And Family Medicine Residency Curricula: A Scoping Literature Review, Eric James Reece
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
This project aims to assess how abortion education has been integrated into medical training over the past decade, with a particular focus on understanding its current state in medical schools and family medicine residencies, including those offering specialized programs affiliated with RHEDI (Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine) and TEACH (Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare). Given the ever-evolving legal landscape following the June 4th, 2022 Supreme Court case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, this review explores how both federal- and state-level legal restrictions impact access to abortion training and attempts to identify gaps …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Implementation Of A Food Insecurity Screening Tool In Identifying Risk Amongst Nicu Families, Jessica Daniels Bsn, Rn, Sahtiah Williams Bsn, Rn, Bobby Bellflower Dnsc, Nnp-Bc, Faanp
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background
Infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are critically ill and at risk of increased infections, developmental delays, and higher readmission rates after discharging due to complex health needs when compared to healthy term newborns. Nutrition has been widely recognized as an important predictor of readmission and developmental delay. However, current practice often does not provide any screening for food insecurity (FI) in NICU families, which assumes security and displays a gap in care surrounding discharge planning. This quality improvement project implements the use of an FI screening tool for NICU families to help practitioners identify FI …

Prostate cancer (PC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men globally, with 1 in 8 men in the US diagnosed during their lifetime. For Low-Risk Prostate Cancer (LRPC), management options include Watchful Waiting (WW), Active Surveillance (AS), or curative treatments such as prostatectomy or radiation. While curative treatments can have significant long-term side effects like urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction, AS is less invasive and preferred due to fewer adverse effects. However, variations in physician training may lead to differing recommendations, potentially causing confusion or frustration for patients consulting multiple specialists. This study investigates whether treatment recommendations—AS, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background
In 2023, colorectal cancer (CRC) was the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US, equating to approximately 50,000 total deaths (National Cancer Institute, 2024). Further, it is estimated that an additional 1.4 million Americans are living with CRC (National Cancer Institute, 2024). Early detection screening modalities remain imperative since the NIH has released a combined survival rate of 70% when utilized (National Cancer Institute, 2024). Different derivatives of CRC develop from pre-cancerous polyps and are often without signs or symptoms of disease progression; this asymptomatic period emphasizes the importance of early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer …

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this review is to address the misconceptions surrounding Hormone Therapy (HT) in menopause largely surrounding the findings from Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). The review explores the history of HT, the risks and benefits, along with current guidelines for HT and non-hormonal options. A comprehensive search was conducted using electronic databases focusing on the effect of HT on breast cancer, cardiovascular health, bone health, and quality of life. Studies that analyzed the implications from the WHI were included as well as the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) current recommendations and guidelines for treatment options in menopause. Findings …

Stop The Bleed! Acute Epistaxis Management, Christopher R. Cannell
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
Epistaxis, the most common Otolaryngology-related emergency, is responsible for one in 200 emergency department (ED) visits in the United States (US) and one-third of otolaryngology visits.1,11 Up to 60% of the population will experience epistaxis during their lifetime, and 6% -10 % will require medical intervention.2,3 Epistaxis occurs in children and adults and has a seasonal variation. Although 85% of nosebleeds are idiopathic, they are more frequent in those on supplemental oxygen, anticoagulation, antiplatelet therapy, and in those with other conditions that may predispose them to bleeding. Most clinicians will encounter patients with acute epistaxis; therefore, it is …

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
The purpose of this review was to investigate the use of testosterone supplementation in the middle-aged male with a focus on the pathophysiology of testosterone throughout the lifespan, current supplementation options and their adverse effects, and the overall benefit of supplementing to enhance quality of life. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted identifying studies that assessed clinical outcomes, pathophysiology, supplementation options, adverse effects and benefits of treatments. The findings suggested that testosterone levels naturally decline with age with most men developing symptoms of hypogonadism around age 60. Testosterone supplementation outside of current guidelines is not recommended, however men …

Under The Surface: A Rare Case Of Morphea In The Rio Grande Valley, Miguel A. Lopez, Jared Hensley, Maria Villegas
Research Symposium
Localized scleroderma, also referred to as “morphea,” is a rare autoimmune disorder that occurs in an estimated one out of 10,000 patients per year. Research on the demographics of morphea has shown an increased prevalence in female patients. Its presentation may consist of skin lesions confined to the epidermis and dermis that appear erythematous and bruise-like, with signs of central skin tightening or sclerosis; deeper lesions may be identified as edematous, erythematous plaques in the absence of well-defined borders. A subtype named “En coup de sabre,” exists among the classification of “linear morphea” and presents with a linear induration either …
