Assessing Preparedness, Attitudes, And Knowledge Of Knapp-Utrgv Family Medicine Residents On Geriatric Nursing Home Care: Phase 1 - Creation Of Interactive Modules, Maria M. Ferreira Caceres, Miguel A. Alvarez Silva, Juan C. Lopez-Alvarenga

Research Colloquium

Background: Training in geriatrics and nursing home care are a critical element of medical education. This gap in knowledge becomes increasingly significant given the changing demographics and the need to provide adequate care for an aging population. Improving geriatrics curriculum and implementing nursing home rotations are essential to ensure optimal care for the elderly, thereby fulfilling both educational and healthcare imperatives.

Objective: We aim to analyze and assess the influence of geriatrics training through a survey to collect attitudes, skills, and knowledge of UTRGV Knapp Family Medicine residents. Additionally, the goal is to create interactive modules to boost their skills …

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand Apr 2024

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Redlining, the practice of discriminating against specific neighborhoods based on race and socioeconomic status, leads to persistent environmental hazards and socioeconomic inequalities that have lasting adverse health effects on their populations. Health disparities are further exacerbated through the concentration of environmental hazards, as well as the escalating impact of climate change, which poses an increased risk of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, heat-related illness, infectious diseases, food insecurity, and socioeconomic difficulties in redline neighborhoods.

This paper examines the interplay of redlining, climate change, and health disparities, with an emphasis on the enduring consequences for these marginalized communities. Through …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Non-prescription antibiotic use includes taking an antibiotic without medical guidance (e.g., leftovers, from friends/relatives, or purchased without a prescription). Non-prescription use contributes to antimicrobial resistance, adverse drug reactions, interactions, superinfection, and microbiome imbalance. Qualitative studies exploring perspectives regarding non-prescription use among Hispanic patients are lacking. We used the Kilbourne Framework for Advancing Health Disparities Research to identify factors influencing patients' non-prescription use and organize our findings.

METHODS: Our study includes Hispanic primary care clinic patients with different types of health insurance coverage in the Houston metroplex who endorsed non-prescription use in a previous survey. Semistructured interviews explored the factors …

Screening For Social Determinants Of Health In The Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Winifred Ann Shouse Mar 2023

Screening For Social Determinants Of Health In The Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Winifred Ann Shouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which individuals are born, age, work, and live that affect health status and outcomes (Rivich et al., 2019). These social and environmental factors can create barriers to patients being able to access and adhere to recommendations for chronic disease management (Gold, et al., 2019). Communication gaps between patients and primary care providers make it challenging for healthcare providers to be completely aware of the financial burdens their patients encounter (Patel et al., 2016). Research supports that identifying and addressing the barriers related to social determinants of health can improve the management of …

Interprofessional team-based care has the potential to improve patient outcomes, improve access to care, decrease costs, and improve team satisfaction. In recent years, efforts to implement team-based care have grown with the adoption of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and an increasing focus on value-based payment models. To better prepare our learners for this future, we introduced a formal team-based care curriculum in our three family medicine residency programs and one pediatric program. In addition to curricula for residents, we developed a team-based care didactic for family medicine clerkship students, presented by an interprofessional team of faculty. This session will …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. COPD is of particular concern in certain sectors of the country, including Central Appalachia where our clinic is located. Assessing patients with COPD presents many challenges as symptoms range from those considered "typical" such as shortness of breath and sputum production to those less often identified like anxiety and social isolation. We conducted a pilot study comparing physician standard assessment of COPD to patient self-assessment using the COPD Assessment Test (CAT). The CAT is an eight-item questionnaire that measures the impact COPD has …

Why Is Family Medicine Different?, F. Matthew Mihelic, Gregory H. Blake

Faculty Publications

An understanding of the role and function of Family Medicine in the healthcare system can provide important insights for Enterprise Architecture. It is often stated that the thought process utilized by Family Medicine physicians is different from that of specialty physicians, but heretofore there has been little or no analysis of what that difference is. This article examines that difference from the perspective of the complex adaptive system that is healthcare today, and shows how it is that Family Medicine physicians perform the vital function of decreasing the entropy or disorder in the patient care system via decision loops, as …
