Pathophysiology of Aortic Stenosis

Proper evaluation of co-morbidities is imperative for patient safety and successful outcomes for patients undergoing anesthesia. Aortic stenosis (AS) is one of the most complex diseases encountered in anesthesia, affecting five percent of older adults and ten percent of the 80-89-year-old-cohort (Joseph et al., 2017). The pathophysiological development of AS is the end result of an inflammatory process caused by endothelial damage from mechanical stress, …

Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Program On Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease Among Adolescents In Selected Schools, In New Delhi, Komal Kumari

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of mortality worldwide. The main risk factors include tobacco chewing/smoking, higher blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity, excessive alcohol use, age, sex, and heredity. Although CVDs commonly develop in middle age or later, risk factors are highly impacted by childhood practices that are continued into maturity. Knowledge gaps on CVD and its risk factors are major obstacles to effective prevention and treatment. Hence, a CVD awareness program was organized in order to educate adolescents about CVD and its risk factors. Objective: The objectives of the study were to identify students’ …

Sinus Pauses And Asystole As A Rare Presentation Of Thyrotoxic Crisis: A Case Report, Christian Akem Dimala, Charnjeet Sandhu, Oreoluwa Oladiran, Agnieszka Mochon, William Finneran Iii

Transformative Medicine

Introduction

Thyroid crisis is a rare and life-threatening endocrine emergency characterized by exaggerated clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism with cardiovascular manifestations being the most severe. Rhythm disturbances, sinus tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, are the commonest cardiac manifestations of severe thyrotoxicosis; however, asystole remains a very atypical and uncommon presentation. We present a case of thyrotoxicosis due to Grave’s disease complicated by multiple episodes of asystole.

Case Presentation

A 65-year-old female recently diagnosed with Grave’s disease presented to the hospital with recurrent episodes of syncope. Her hospital course was significant for atrial fibrillation with subsequent progression to sinus pauses and asystole spontaneously …

Finding The Optimal Ionic Liquid To Target White Blood Cell Subpopulations Using Nanoparticles, Meghan Gorniak May 2022

Finding The Optimal Ionic Liquid To Target White Blood Cell Subpopulations Using Nanoparticles, Meghan Gorniak

Honors Theses

Disorders and diseases of the immune system have become more prevalent in recent decades and can have life-threatening effects on those afflicted. Granulocyte disorders disproportionately affect infants and children, while chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in adults. Unfortunately, current treatments have many drawbacks such as everyday injection, short-lived efficacy, and unknown levels of safety and effectiveness. It is imperative to find more effective treatment options that could allow for easier drug delivery to specific populations of white blood cells (WBCs). Nanoscale medicine shows promising application, but complications remain in reaching the desired target site and …

Jnk And Nf-Κb Cell Signaling Pathways In Cardiovascular Disease Present Potential Targets For Curcumin Therapy, Mary Richfield

Senior Honors Theses

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a compound derived from the rhizomes of Curcumin longa that has been long used for medicinal purposes. Curcumin alleviates the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, aneurysm, and cardiomyopathy. The mechanism of curcumin therapy is under active research. The NF-κB and JNK pathways are two that curcumin interacts with to block inflammatory processes, apoptosis, and fibrotic tissue remodeling to prevent the pathologies of cardiovascular disease. While curcumin has demonstrated powerful mediation of cardiovascular disease, its bioavailability in body tissues is limited due to the instability and hydrophobicity of its structure. Further work is underway to stabilize …

Imaging Techniques For Aortic Aneurysms And Dissections In Mice: Comparisons Of Ex Vivo, In Situ, And Ultrasound Approaches, Sohei Ito, Hong S. Lu, Alan Daugherty, Hisashi Sawada

Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

Aortic aneurysms and dissections are life-threatening conditions that have a high risk for lethal bleeding and organ malperfusion. Many studies have investigated the molecular basis of these diseases using mouse models. In mice, ex vivo, in situ, and ultrasound imaging are major approaches to evaluate aortic diameters, a common parameter to determine the severity of aortic aneurysms. However, accurate evaluations of aortic dimensions by these imaging approaches could be challenging due to pathological features of aortic aneurysms. Currently, there is no standardized mode to assess aortic dissections in mice. It is important to understand the characteristics of each approach for …

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, Amy N. Wagner Dec 2021

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, Amy N. Wagner

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) causes 35% of myocardial infarctions in women under the age of 50 years old. Typically, these are healthy, active women without risk factors for atherosclerotic coronary artery syndromes. SCAD is a myocardial infarction caused by a coronary arterial dissection and not atherosclerotic plaques. Because of this, those effected do not present with the typical risk factors associated with acute atherosclerotic coronary syndromes. Therefore, clinicians must maintain a high level of suspicion for SCAD in young, healthy, women presenting with chest pain. Observation and pharmacological therapies are the preferred methods of treatment for a SCAD event. …

Objective: Epidemiological studies link hyperlipidemia with increased risk for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, the influence of lipid-lowering drugs statins on prevalence and progression of clinical and experimental AAAs varies between reports, engendering controversy on the association of hyperlipidemia with AAA disease. This study investigated the impact of hypercholesterolemia on elastase-induced experimental AAAs in mice. Methods: Both spontaneous (targeted deletion of apolipoprotein E) and induced mouse hypercholesterolemia models were employed. In male wild type (WT) C57BL/6J mice, hypercholesterolemia was induced via intraperitoneal injection of an adeno-associated virus (AAV) encoding a gain-of-function proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 mutation (PCSK9) followed by …

Does Epa Cause A Decrease In Inflammation Of Bend.3 Cells Through Ffar4?, Clay J. Weidenhamer Aug 2021

Does Epa Cause A Decrease In Inflammation Of Bend.3 Cells Through Ffar4?, Clay J. Weidenhamer

Masters Theses

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease initiated by low and oscillatory shear stress on the endothelium. The inflammatory process recruits leukocytes to the vessel wall by expression of the adhesion molecule VCAM-1. Activation of the NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway is responsible for the increase in VCM-1 expression. Omega 3 FAs, such as EPA, reduce the risk of atherosclerosis by decreasing this inflammatory response. The pathway by which omega 3 FAs is proposed to inhibit inflammation includes activating FFAR4 to decrease NF-κB activation thereby reducing expression of adhesion molecules. We hypothesized that treatment of endothelial cells with 30 μM EPA would decrease …

Our laboratory has integrated the use of a human-derived, in vitro model of airway mucociliary tissue. We isolate human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) from the nasal mucociliary tissue of donors with a small brush and expand the airway progenitor cells in culture. The HNECs are then seeded onto semi-permeable transwell inserts. The inserts are in contact with the media in the lower chamber but don’t contain media in the upper chamber therefore the cells are exposed to the air while drawing nutrients from the media below, this is called the Air-Liquid Interface (ALI). HNECs cultured at the ALI initiate a …
