A Review Of Recent And Developing Studies Regarding Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Pci): A Narrative Review, Bisher Alsabbagh, Azeez Shala, Joshua Rupert, Abdallah Elsayed

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

This comprehensive literature review synthesizes the most recent evidence and evolving clinical guidelines concerning percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from 2015 to 2025. The study integrates findings from 42 peer-reviewed trials, meta-analyses, registries, and international guideline statements issued by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA), European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and related societies. Results reveal a decade-long evolution in PCI practice marked by a shift from anatomy-driven to physiology and imaging-guided decision-making, supported by tools such as fractional flow reserve (FFR), instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Modern guidelines emphasize individualized, team-based revascularization …

Maternal Health And Congenital Heart Defects: Investigating Ventricular Septal Defects In South Texas Region 11, Miguel A. Lopez, Sophia Moon, Jonathan M. Hebert, Padmanabhan Rengasamy Mar 2025

Maternal Health And Congenital Heart Defects: Investigating Ventricular Septal Defects In South Texas Region 11, Miguel A. Lopez, Sophia Moon, Jonathan M. Hebert, Padmanabhan Rengasamy

Research Symposium

Congenital heart defects are a known risk factor for early childhood mortality and can be traced to poor maternal health, a crisis plaguing the South Texas region. This perspective research project utilizes previously computed data on the prevalence of ventricular septal defects (VSD) in South Texas region 11 combined with a comprehensive literature review to investigate the correlation between both maternal obesity and diabetes with VSD. Current literature supports a significant association between maternal diabetes and VSD, with one Russian study reporting an eight to nine fold increased risk in VSD in children born to diabetic mothers. By contrast, the …

Comorbidity Of Mood Disorders And Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome: A Case Report, Abhishekh Pokhrel, Alexa Lissete Zarate, Alcides Amador Sep 2024

Comorbidity Of Mood Disorders And Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome: A Case Report, Abhishekh Pokhrel, Alexa Lissete Zarate, Alcides Amador

Research Colloquium

Background: The comorbidity of mood disorders and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) presents a significant challenge, especially in pediatric populations. UARS, characterized by increased upper airway resistance during sleep, often leads to disrupted sleep and daytime symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive impairment. Studies estimate UARS affects 15-30% of patients undergoing polysomnography for suspected sleep-disordered breathing. Mood & Anxiety Disorders are prevalent in patients with sleep-disordered breathing, with higher rates than in the general population.

Case Presentation: 16-year-old female, with psychiatric history of Bipolar II Disorder current episode depressed, ADHD, and Other Specified Anxiety Disorder presents for a follow-up. Since …

Using Plastinated Cadaveric Models For Anatomical Study Of Dorsalis Pedis Artery And Its Variation, Steven Bolton, Ifunanya Monube, Hooman Tabatabai-Mir Dec 2023

The dorsalis pedis artery is a main artery of the dorsum of the foot. It directly arises from the anterior tibial artery and travels distally to the base of the 1st metatarsal. Its main function includes supplying oxygenated blood to the dorsal surface of the foot. A weak dorsalis pedis pulse is an indication of underlying circulation issue, such as peripheral vascular disease. Anatomical variations of the artery are not uncommon, including the total absence of the artery. Branching variations occur in approximately 10% of the population. Knowledge of these variations is critical for surgeons to prevent surgical complications

Extracellular Vesicles, and more specifically, exosomes, are essential for effective cell-to-cell communication in a wide variety of tissues. In the last couple of decades, these nanovesicles have been proven to be active participants and regulators in many disease processes; therefore, their therapeutic effects have been widely studied and proven in various cardiovascular diseases both, in vitro and in vivo. Thus, this study aims at assessing the effects of running healthy mice exosomes on cardiomyocyte and cardiac tissue samples obtained from diabetic mice. Here, we successfully extract exosomes from mice plasma and detect their presence through the use of anti-CD9 and …
