Fractures of the humerus are relatively uncommon, with spiral fractures typically resulting from rotational forces. This case report describes a 25-year-old male who sustained a right-sided spiral humerus fracture during an arm-wrestling match. The diagnosis was confirmed through radiographic imaging, and the fracture was successfully managed with closed reduction and posterior long arm splinting. This case highlights the importance of recognizing less common mechanisms of injury, like arm wrestling, in the context of humeral fractures. It also emphasizes the effective non-operative treatment of such fractures in young, healthy individuals.

Background: Periprosthetic femur fractures (PFFs) are increasingly recognized as a significant complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), particularly as the number of procedures rises. The ideal suture should have high tensile strength that loses strength at the same rate as the healing tissue gains strength, be easy to handle and form secure knots, induce minimal inflammation, and stretch/recoil according to wound contraction. We report the case of a 44-year-old male that presented to the emergency department (ED) with a fall on his outstretched hand and was subsequently diagnosed to have a trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation. He underwent closed reduction of the dislocation in the ED and operative management ten days later. While wrist injuries are common in the ED, it is important to diagnose perilunate and lunate dislocations early as they can often be associated with avascular necrosis, neurological injury and poor functional outcomes if not managed in a timely manner.

We report the case of a 26-year-old male with a significant psychiatric and substance use history who came to the emergency department (ED) with deep partial second degree burns to his back subsequent to using a heating pad for unknown periods of time prior to presentation. Rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury that occurred in this patient due to his burns. It is important to understand that although beneficial, if heating pads are misused or overused, they can cause injury.

To identify the incidence of blood stream infections (BSIs) and endocarditis in patients with diabetic foot infections (DFIs), risk factors and clinical outcomes. A post hoc analysis of 280 patients using pooled patient level data from three RTCs. Blood cultures were drawn at time of admission for DFI. Deep intraoperative cultures were obtained from infected foot wounds. Data from the 12-month follow-up were used to determine clinical outcomes. 77.1% (N = 216) had blood cultures of which 15.7% (n = 34) had BSI. One patient (3.3%) had endocarditis. Macrophages are highly plastic cells central to pathogen removal, tissue regeneration, and inflammation, making them key targets in biomaterial design for improved clinical outcomes. Foreign body responses (FBRs) to implanted biomaterials often involve excessive macrophage-mediated inflammation, leading to fibrotic encapsulation, infection, and implant failure. Advances in tissue engineering demonstrate that macrophage polarization - the transition from pro-inflammatory M1 to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes - can be influenced by biomaterial properties to mitigate these responses and enhance regeneration. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated an ototoxicity monitoring program (OMP) for improving audiologic follow-up in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.

SETTING: Tertiary academic center.

METHODS: Two hundred and forty patients were recommended for chemotherapy between January 2017 and June 2022. An OMP was implemented in March 2021; every patient received an audiology referral and was contacted to schedule a pretreatment audiogram. Patients were divided into pre-OMP and post-OMP cohorts. Main outcome measures included rates of pretreatment audiograms, posttreatment audiograms, posttreatment otologic symptoms, and hearing aid utilization.

Our change project focuses on preventing pressure injuries in OR patients using an alternating pressure overlay and gel pad system during surgery and recovery. Pressure injuries cost the healthcare system upwards of $26 billion annually, and surgery patients are at high risk due to prolonged immobility, constant pressure on one area, hemodynamic changes, and excessive moisture. Nurses can play a critical role in reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes by utilizing proper training and outcome tracking. Objectives: To evaluate rates of nonunion repair, osseous healing, and outcomes in femoral nonunions with contemporary healing. Design: Retrospective review. Setting: Five academic level 1 trauma centers. Patients/Participants: This study includes adult patients (age older than 18) seen at one of the participating institutions between 2012 and 2019 who sustained a femur fracture (OTA/AO 31, 32, 33) initially treated with intramedullary fixation that developed nonunion and were treated with exchange nailing for the index nonunion surgery. METHODS: A list of 1200 patients was generated through an electronic health record system using keywords: diabetic diagnosis, falls, and fractures to conduct this retrospective cohort study. This condition not only impacts blood sugar levels but also has significant effects on bone health. Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue that results in the release of intracellular contents such as myoglobin, CK, and electrolytes into the surrounding interstitium and circulation. Rhabdomyolysis is commonly precipitated by trauma, excessive physical exertion, infection, or drug toxicity. Compartment syndrome can be a complication of severe rhabdomyolysis, characterized by increased pressure in a closed anatomical space which can lead to compromised perfusion and ischemia. Given the lack of established practice guidelines for the management of cutaneous symptoms associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis, treatments range from various dressings to skin substitutes. The following report details a case of a 21-year-old male patient with this diagnosis who presented nine days after rash eruption from an outside hospital with no signs of healing. The patient was then successfully managed surgically eleven days after symptom onset with debridement of epidermal blisters and placement of Suprathel®. Purpose: Current treatment guidelines strongly support the use of antiresorptive therapy in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) with the goal of preventing skeletal related events (SRE). Despite these concrete, data-driven recommendations, the impact of delays in antiresorptive initiation in NDMM patients is understudied. Through a multicenter retrospective study, we examined the impact of delays in antiresorptive initiation on the rates of SREs. There are few high-level studies comparing treatments of athletic pubalgia, and this investigation seeks to utilize original articles to compare two common techniques for treatment of athletic pubalgia. We present a case of acute carpal tunnel syndrome secondary to tight handcuffs in a detained patient. The severity of the motor and sensory deficits prompted consultation with orthopedic specialists and admission for an observation period with ultimate emergency operative intervention. Handcuff neuropathies are well documented in the literature, mainly involving the superficial branch of the radial nerve, which has strict sensory input into the dorsum of the hand.
