Study Design: Systematic Review. Objective: To describe the historical classifications of thoracolumbar injuries and their evolution into the AO Spine Thoracolumbar Injury Classification System. Methods: A systematic review of MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Databases was performed in keeping with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: 445 articles were crystallized to 14 included studies. Simple categorization systems offered by Bohler or Watson-Jones merely identify fracture morphology. Holdsworth and Denis conveyed a sense of the stability of injuries by noting columns of stability, but still failed to take into consideration important factors such as neurological status or …

Return To Sport And Performance Outcomes After Hand Fractures In Professional Baseball Players, Ryan W. Paul, Sean M. Wilson, Gaston Davis, Amit Syal, Steven B. Cohen Sep 2025

Return To Sport And Performance Outcomes After Hand Fractures In Professional Baseball Players, Ryan W. Paul, Sean M. Wilson, Gaston Davis, Amit Syal, Steven B. Cohen

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: About 7% of injuries in the Major League Baseball (MLB) involve the hand. Fractures of the hand are not uncommon in professional baseball players while fielding or from being hit by a pitch while batting; however, the outcomes of professional baseball players treated both operatively and nonoperatively are unclear.

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to report the return-to-sport (RTS) rate, RTS time, and performance outcomes in professional baseball position players who sustained a hand fracture. The secondary purpose was to compare outcomes between positions and between operatively versus nonoperatively treated players. It was hypothesized that there would …

Periprosthetic Femur Fractures After Total Hip Arthroplasty: Risk Factors And Management Strategies, Clarence Julian Clark Ii, Adam Friedman, Jaylyn Thompson May 2025

Periprosthetic Femur Fractures After Total Hip Arthroplasty: Risk Factors And Management Strategies, Clarence Julian Clark Ii, Adam Friedman, Jaylyn Thompson

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: Periprosthetic femur fractures (PFFs) are increasingly recognized as a significant complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), particularly as the number of procedures rises. While THA is one of the most successful orthopedic surgeries, PFFs can compromise outcomes and demand complex management.

Objective: To review current literature and identify patient- and implant-related risk factors for PFFs, as well as to summarize effective management strategies guided by classification systems.

Methods: A structured literature review was conducted using PubMed, focusing on articles published in the past 10 years. Eight peer-reviewed studies were selected based on relevance to femoral fractures post-THA. Data on …

Impact Of Diabetes On Fall Related Lower Limb Fractures, Bryce M. Bellon, Daniel Salinas, Patrick De La Torre Shutz, Hunter Butler, Sean Corcoran, Kelsey Baker Mar 2025

Impact Of Diabetes On Fall Related Lower Limb Fractures, Bryce M. Bellon, Daniel Salinas, Patrick De La Torre Shutz, Hunter Butler, Sean Corcoran, Kelsey Baker

Research Symposium

Background: Diabetes is a disorder that affects many Americans, characterized primarily by hyperglycemia due to either insulin resistance or lack of insulin secretion. This condition not only impacts blood sugar levels but also has significant effects on bone health. In diabetes, bone density is often decreased due to reduced osteoblast activity, which is responsible for bone formation, and increased osteoclast activity, which leads to bone resorption. This imbalance accelerates the breakdown of bone. Additionally, diabetics frequently suffer from lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD), which results in poor vascularization of the lower limbs. These factors contribute to an increased risk of …

Incidence Of Allergic Reactions To Cefazolin In Patients With Penicillin Allergy Undergoing Operative Repair Of Pelvis Or Extremity Fracture, Hans Drawbert, Laclan Anderson, Marisa Fat, John Riehl Jan 2025

Incidence Of Allergic Reactions To Cefazolin In Patients With Penicillin Allergy Undergoing Operative Repair Of Pelvis Or Extremity Fracture, Hans Drawbert, Laclan Anderson, Marisa Fat, John Riehl

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Surgical site infections (SSI) account for 20% of all healthcare associated infections with an estimated yearly cost of $3.3 billion in the US alone (1). Cefazolin (Ancef) is a commonly used prophylactic antibiotic in orthopaedic surgery and has been shown to reduce SSI compared to other antibiotics, but potential cross-reactivity in patients with a penicillin allergy (PA) leads to concerns regarding the safety of cefazolin administration. This study evaluates the incidence of allergic reactions to cefazolin in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery with a PA. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional database review study was conducted. Patients aged 18 or over who …

BACKGROUND: To effectively counsel patients prior to shoulder arthroplasty, surgeons should understand the overall life trajectory and life expectancy of patients in the context of the patient's shoulder pathology and medical comorbidities. Such an understanding can influence both operative and nonoperative decision-making and implant choices. This study evaluated 5-year mortality following shoulder arthroplasty in patients ≥65 years old and identified associated risk factors.

METHODS: We utilized Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Fee-for-Service inpatient and outpatient claims data to investigate the 5-year mortality rate following shoulder arthroplasty procedures performed from 2014 to 2016. The impact of patient demographics, including fracture …
