External Stoma Diversion: A Palliative Measure For Peristomal Wound Healing In Resource-Limited Settings, Rachel W Davis, Youmna A Sherif, Catherine Anne Morrison

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The provision of intestinal stoma care is challenging in austere settings due to limitations in surgical and wound care access as well as the high cost and sparsity of ostomy supplies. As a result, many surgical patients suffer from ostomy-related complications such as peristomal wounds and are unable to find relief for these complications from standard treatments and measures. This article describes the external stoma diversion, a cost-effective palliative surgical procedure that assists in the healing of peristomal wounds in resource-limited settings.

In Vitro Bioactivities Of Single Or Combined Extracts From Three Selected Asian Vegetables, Mahmud Norfaizah May 2020

In Vitro Bioactivities Of Single Or Combined Extracts From Three Selected Asian Vegetables, Mahmud Norfaizah

Student Works (2020-2029)

Three underutilized folklore oriental-based vegetables Acalypha indica (AI), Centella asiatica (CA), and Sesbania grandiflora (SG) have been investigated for pharmacological activities relevant to wound healing process and synergistic actions. Single and combination of aqueous (A) and methanol (M) extracts of the three vegetables namely AI-A, CA-A, SG-A, AI-M, CA-M, SG-M, AI-A+CA-A, AI-A+SG-A, CA-A+SG-A, AI-M+CA-M, AI-M+SG-M, and CA-M+SG-M were assessed for stimulation of wound closure by normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells, antioxidant, protection against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), stimulation of nitric oxide (NO) from RAW264.7 macrophages and antimicrobial activities. The combined vegetable extracts AI-A+CA-A (90.76%) showed the highest percentage of wound …

A Retrospective Matched-Cohort Study Of 3994 Lower Extremity Wounds Of Multiple Etiologies Across 644 Institutions Comparing A Bioactive Human Skin Allograft, Theraskin, Plus Standard Of Care, To Standard Of Care Alone, Geoff C Gurtner, Aimee D Garcia, Katie Bakewell, Jason B Alarcon Feb 2020

A Retrospective Matched-Cohort Study Of 3994 Lower Extremity Wounds Of Multiple Etiologies Across 644 Institutions Comparing A Bioactive Human Skin Allograft, Theraskin, Plus Standard Of Care, To Standard Of Care Alone, Geoff C Gurtner, Aimee D Garcia, Katie Bakewell, Jason B Alarcon

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Most chronic wounds are related to comorbidities, for which no clinical trials are performed. This retrospective propensity matched-cohort study examined data from 2 074 000 lower extremity wounds across 644 institutions to determine the effectiveness of TheraSkin plus standard of care (SOC; n = 1997) versus SOC alone (n = 1997). Multivariate modelling comparing outcomes such as healing rates, percent area reductions (PARs), amputations, recidivism, treatment completion, and medical transfers were evaluated. A higher proportion of wounds in the treatment group compared with the controls were more likely to close (68.3% versus 60.3%), particularly wounds with exposed structures (64% versus …
