INTRODUCTION: When a patient presents with a blistering rash arriving at the diagnosis can seem overwhelming. Bullous Pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease and tends to affect older individuals, with a mean age of presentation of eighty. It is caused by antibodies targeting the basement membrane zone, the structure between epidermis and dermis, specifically affecting the BP180 (Type-XVII collagen) and BP230 (a plakin) proteins. Antibody-antigen complexes lead to complement activation and destruction of these transmembrane proteins, causing separation of the epidermis and dermis, and formation of tense, subepidermal blisters and bullae. Background: The current guidelines of the American society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) regarding laboratory testing of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER-2 in breast cancer have been in place since 2010. Optimal tissue handling requires a cold ischemic time of less than 1 hour and a formalin fixation time between 6 and 72 hours. In July 2023 HCA Westside hospital implemented a new Formalin Fixation Time documentation protocol. The data is presented quarterly at the Cancer Committee meeting.

INTRODUCTION: What should come to mind when any physician sees dark red spots on the legs? If you answered vasculitis, then you are on the right track. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is defined as small vessel inflammation of the dermal capillaries and venules. The clinical hallmark finding of LCV is palpable purpura (raised, round, purple plaques) on the lower extremities. LCV is confirmed by histopathology showing neutrophilic infiltration in the walls of dermal vasculature. Though LCV is the most common cause of clinical vasculitis, the annual incidence of biopsy-proven LCV is approximately 30-45 per million individuals. LCV typically occurs in adults …

Introduction: Scabies is a parasitic dermatologic condition that often presents as an extremely pruritic rash. A rare and highly contagious variant of scabies is crusted scabies, formerly known as Norwegian scabies. Crusted scabies presents with hyperkeratotic papules and plaques, most commonly on the palms and soles. Due to the variety of presentations seen in scabies, it can be difficult to diagnose. Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Background: Skin biopsy requisition forms (SBRFs) are the primary communication tool between dermatologists and dermatopathologists. Diameters of biopsied skin lesions are frequently omitted on SBRFs. This quality improvement project aimed to increase the rate of reporting diameters of neoplasms on SBRFs from an academic dermatology outpatient clinic to greater than 65% within three years. Methods: The Plan-Do-Study-Act model was utilized. An initial audit was performed for SBRFs of biopsies obtained between July 1, 2021, and February 4, 2022 (“Cycle 1”). Introduction: Topical steroids are commonly prescribed first-line medications for various inflammatory and autoimmune dermatologic conditions. Their widespread use raises the importance of proper use. Topical steroids have well-known side effects including skin atrophy, redness, striae, and telangiectasias. These side effects have not been well documented in patients of various skin tones. Primary care clinicians must recognize topical steroid side effects and their appearance in various skin tones. Introduction. Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis (CNGM) is an uncommon subtype of granulomatous mastitis (GM) affecting young to middle-aged parous women. Although there is no universally accepted diagnostic criteria, CNGM has a highly distinct histological pattern characterized by suppurative lipogranulomas composed of central lipid vacuoles rimmed by neutrophils with an outer cuff of epithelioid histiocytes.

Case 1: 42-year-old recently pregnant woman with a history of left breast mastitis and abscess treated with incision and drainage (I&D) six months prior, presented with contralateral right breast mastitis with abscess without improvement on oral antibiotics. Introduction: Tapinarof 1% cream is a novel non-steroidal topical medication recently FDA-approved for plaque psoriasis. Tapinarof’s non-steroidal mechanism allow for longer treatment periods without topical corticosteroid side effects e.g. skin atrophy, hypopigmentation, telangiectasias, and striae. Adverse events identified during pivotal trials may not be completely defined before widespread clinical use. This case reports a new presentation of folliculitis with tapinarof use. Case Presentation: A 25-year-old female with trisomy-21 presented for a rash on her left lower leg. The eruption began one year earlier. This study addresses the escalating incidence of NRAS-mutant melanomas, a type of skin cancer lacking FDA-approved targeted therapies. Despite ongoing research targeting the RAF/MEK/ERK pathway, existing drugs fail to enhance progression-free survival due to acquired resistance. This project identifies a novel role for ABL1/2 and DDR1 kinases in driving drug resistance and proliferation of NRAS-mutant melanoma cells. ABL1/2 and DDR1 cooperate to promote RAF homodimerization and protein stability in order to reactivate MEK/ERK signaling to drive MEK1/2 inhibitor (MEKi) resistance and promote survival of resistant cells. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a disease that affects the sensory, motor, sudomotor, vasomotor and trophic systems of patients. The pathophysiology is currently unknown and the diagnostic criteria that is used, the Budapest criteria, has its own shortcomings. This had led to hurdles in the research of the disease and well as a lack of high-quality studies on the efficacy of the many treatments currently being used to treat CRPS today. This poster explores those concepts.

PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) is an umbrella term used to unify a heterogenous group of vascular overgrowth disorders by a shared genetic cause. Given that patients with PROS have a known, or likely, gene mutation in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR cascade, we hypothesize they experience a rapid response to inhibitors of this pathway, including sirolimus. In the following case series, we describe 3 patients with PROS and their response to sirolimus therapy. Despite their unique clinical presentations, insight into the genetic origin of their vascular overgrowth allowed for their successful treatment with the same medication.

Background: Lengthy therapeutic regimens in leprosy are prone to defaults, contributing to more antibiotic-resistant Mycobacterium. Intervening patients’ medical habits midway would be more complicated than understanding their perception of undergoing such regimens in advance. We study the factors considered relevant to leprosy patients’ compliance to construct a novel self-reporting questionnaire that can predict the patients’ adherence before initiating multidrug therapy.

Methods: According to the Delphi methods, we conducted three rounds of interviews with twenty-three respondents from various backgrounds, including dermatologists, government officials, healthcare workers, and patients with leprosy, to infer the associated factors of the included items. Each …

This project examines how engineers are creating artificial intelligence systems to help with dermatology diagnosis. Researchers believe that these systems can help close the health care gap in lower income and Black and brown communities, but dermatologists of color worry that these systems are not being trained to recognize skin conditions on patients of color.

Metformin is a widely used drug for treatment of diabetes mellitus, due to its safety and efficacy. In addition to its role as an antidiabetic drug, numerous beneficial effects of metformin have enabled its use in various diseases. Considering the anti-androgenic, anti-angiogenic, anti-fibrotic and antioxidant properties of metformin, it may have the potential to improve chronic inflammatory skin diseases. However, further evidence is needed to confirm the efficacy of metformin in dermatological conditions, This review focuses on exploring the therapeutic targets of metformin in acne vulgaris, hidradenitis suppurativa and rosacea, by studying their pathogeneses.
