Background/Objectives: Microbial dysbiosis is implicated with a pathogenic role in both irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and several dermatological conditions. Yet, few studies have assessed a potential overlapping epidemiologic association. We aimed to assess the 1-year prevalence of common dermatologic conditions following an initial IBS diagnosis and to evaluate the reverse association using reciprocal analyses. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using TriNetX. Patients aged 18–50 with no history of inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or infectious intestinal disease were matched 1:1 to healthy controls by demographics and comorbidities. The primary outcome was the prevalence of acne vulgaris, psoriasis, …

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo may impact psychosocial development, especially among African American pediatric patients, given heightened visibility and increasing rates of anxiety and depression in this subpopulation.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate psychiatric comorbidities and treatment initiation in African American pediatric patients.

METHODS: A total of 327 African American pediatric patients with vitiligo were each matched to 3 patients without vitiligo by age, race, and sex in this case-control study. Prevalence of psychiatric conditions and subsequent initiation of pharmacotherapy and/or psychotherapy were analyzed.

RESULTS: Compared to controls, pediatric African American patients with vitiligo were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with depression (

LIMITATIONS: This …

Janus Kinase (Jak) Inhibitors: A New Frontier In The Treatment Of Vitiligo, Catherine F. Alapatt, Amanda Greenspan, Mohammad Fardos

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Up to 70 million people worldwide suffer from vitiligo, an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of melanin. Current treatment options vary in efficacy. The disease manifests clinically as white circular macules of depigmentation seen primarily on the face and appendages.1 The pathophysiology of vitiligo is multifactorial and still being studied. One proposed mechanism behind the pathophysiology of vitiligo involves the upregulation of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) with downstream effects on JAK/STAT pathways resulting in CXCL10 transcription.1,2 Here we discuss Ruxolitinib, a topical JAK inhibitor, that recently passed its clinical trial phase, and Ritlecitinib, an oral JAK inhibitor which is currently …

There is no first-line treatment for vitiligo, a skin disease characterized by a lack of melanin produced by the melanocytes, resulting in an urgent demand for new therapeutic drugs capable of stimulating melanocyte functions, including melanogenesis. In this study, traditional medicinal plant extracts were tested for cultured human melanocyte proliferation, migration, and melanogenesis using MTT, scratch wound-healing assays, transmission electron microscopy, immunofluorescence staining, and Western blot technology. Of the methanolic extracts, Lycium shawii L. (L. shawii) extract increased melanocyte proliferation at low concentrations and modulated melanocyte migration. At the lowest tested concentration (i.e., 7.8 μg/mL), the L. shawii …

Content Analysis Of Vitiligo Portrayal On Social Media, Mary Miller

Honors Theses

Given that vitiligo affects a small percentage of the world population, and its affects are not widely known, there is an increasing need to learn of its effects on those with vitiligo, both physical and psychological. Social media has become an influential platform to spread awareness and build confidence in those with vitiligo. This study aims to find how vitiligo is portrayed through social media using content analysis procedures. This is a cross-sectional content analysis that utilized a codebook to analyze Instagram posts. The results were analyzed by interrater reliability and frequency for each coder. The findings of this content …

Background: Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) become the mainstay of widespread vitiligo therapy due to its great efficacy and safety compared with other modalities. The use of NB-UVB for vitiligo has been widely studied in adult patients, while studies on geriatric patients specifically are still very limited. This report aims to show the immediate response after the initial treatment, side effects of therapy, and other problems that were encountered during therapy in two geriatric patients with vitiligo who have been followed up for more than 12 months.

Case Illustration: We reported two geriatric patients with vitiligo treated with NB-UVB …

Spontaneous Regression Of Divided Nevus Of The Eyelid Evaluated By Dermoscopy : Is It Hypopigmentation After Regression Or Vitiligo, Danang Tri Wahyudi, Izzah Aulia, Aida S. D. Hoemardani, Agassi Suseno Sutarjo

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Background: Divided nevus, also known as “kissing nevus,” is a rare form of congenital melanocytic nevus that occurs on opposing margins of upper and lower eyelids. A paucity of literature on this rare anomaly exists, with most being case reports and series. Moreover, regression of this lesion was rarely reported.

Case Illustration: We present a rare case of congenital divided nevus of the eyelid that regressed after eight years, confirmed with dermoscopy. A six-year-old boy presented to the Dharmais National Cancer Hospital with two pigmented macules on the upper and lower right eyelid since birth. A year ago, …

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Background: Vitiligo is a disease marked by depigmented macules. Prevalence of vitiligo varies between 0.1- 2.3% worldwide. The objectives of this study are to identify the socio-demographic profile of vitiligo patients and distribution of narrowband-UVB given as a treatment modality. However, in Indonesia, including at dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, there has not been any study on the profile of vitiligo patients. Therefore, a preliminary study on the patients’ profile would be very useful for healthcare providers in calculating the need for narrowband-UVB equipment and evaluation of its current use.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study, using secondary data …

Double-Blind Randomized Trials Once A Week Narrowband Ultraviolet B (Nb-Uvb) Phototherapy In Vitiligo, Retno Dwi Utami, Mira Trisna Murti, Muhammad Risman, Arie Kusumawardhani

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Background: Vitiligo is a skin pigmentation disorder, affecting approximately 1-2% population worldwide. Currently, there are wide varieties of treatment to achieve re-pigmentation, and phototherapy is one of the effective treatments. Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) is administered twice a week according to the phototherapy protocol for vitiligo. Some vitiligo patients have difficulty following this schedule, leading to decrease of patient’s compliance. Therefore, we performed study comparing the efficacy of phototherapy frequency, once a week and twice a week NB-UVB in vitiligo.

Methods: This preliminary study divided 10 patients into 2 groups of 5 patients each with randomized, double-blind method. …

PCOM Physician Assistant Studies Student Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy in combination with nonsteroidal topical medications is more effective at repigmentation of vitiligo lesions when compared to NB-UVB therapy alone in healthy men and women between the ages of 11 and 69.

STUDY DESIGN: Review of three peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials written in English, two of which were published in 2014, and one in 2011.

DATA SOURCES: Studies were selected based on the method of study, the randomized- control structure of the studies, and the relevance to the clinical question, and all …
