Knowledge And Awareness Of Vitamin D Among Pregnant Or Lactating Iraqi Refugee Women: A Call For Different Approaches In Health Education And Outreach, Someireh Amirfaiz, Ed.D.
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy and lactation has negative impacts on maternal, fetal, and infant health. Low health literacy and other social determinants of health may increase the risk of deficiency among refugee women. This qualitative study used a survey and in-depth individual interviews to examine knowledge of vitamin D among ten pregnant or breastfeeding Iraqi refugee women in the United States, and sought participants’ recommendations on culture-centered and participatory health promotion strategies. All participants reported having insufficient information and understanding of vitamin D, its health benefits, and the risks of deficiency. The four primary themes that emerged from the …

The Role Of Microglia In Neuroinflammation Of The Spinal Cord After Peripheral Nerve Injury, Tana S. Pottorf, Travis M. Rotterman, William M. Mccallum, Zoë A. Haley-Johnson, Francisco J. Alvarez
Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications
Peripheral nerve injuries induce a pronounced immune reaction within the spinal cord, largely governed by microglia activation in both the dorsal and ventral horns. The mechanisms of activation and response of microglia are diverse depending on the location within the spinal cord, type, severity, and proximity of injury, as well as the age and species of the organism. Thanks to recent advancements in neuro-immune research techniques, such as single-cell transcriptomics, novel genetic mouse models, and live imaging, a vast amount of literature has come to light regarding the mechanisms of microglial activation and alluding to the function …

Data and Test Instruments
Background: Our aim was to establish if presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) predicted worse outcome inpatients with non-metastatic esophageal cancer undergoing tri-modality therapy. Methods: We prospectively collected CTC data from patients with operable non-metastatic esophageal cancer fromApril 2009 to November 2016 enrolled in our QUINTETT esophageal cancer randomized trial (NCT00907543). Patientswere randomized to receive either neoadjuvant cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) plus radiotherapy followed bysurgical resection (Neoadjuvant) or adjuvant cisplatin, 5-FU, and epirubicin chemotherapy with concurrent extendedvolume radiotherapy following surgical resection (Adjuvant). CTCs were identified with the CellSearch® system beforethe initiation of any treatment (surgery or chemoradiotherapy) as well as at …
