Successful Treatment Of Radiation-Induced Colitis And Enteritis With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Mark D. Ringle, Jeffrey S. Cooper

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Introduction

Previously irradiated tissue is characterized by changes including decreased vascularity, impaired cellular proliferation, and local hypoxia consistent with fibroblastic atrophy which can persist long after radiation therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of complications arising from these late effects of radiation on normal tissue through enhancing fibroblast proliferation, collagen maturation, stem cell recruitment, and angiogenesis.

Methods

We report on three patients with debilitating radiation enterocolitis causing issues including recurrent bowel obstruction, anorexia requiring total parenteral nutrition, pain, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, dehydration, and malnutrition.

Results

In all three cases marked improvement was the …

Hybrid Laparoscopic And Endoscopic Management Of Gastric Band Erosion Resulting In Bowel Obstruction, Katie Marrero Md, Michael Nolte Md, John Kim Do, Facs, Christian Perez Md, Facs, Fasmbs

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

While laparoscopic gastric banding is not as prevalent, the management of patients with a history of gastric banding remains a concern. Gastric bands have been noted to erode and can migrate through the bowel leading to a variety of issues. We were able to successfully manage this almost completely endoscopically without the need for a bowel enterotomy for retrieval. This allowed for enhanced patient recovery and avoided the morbidity associated with bowel enterotomy which is commonly done in these settings.

Introducer-Free Mis-Assisted Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Placement: A Technical Document, Eric Chen, Patrick Opperman, Edson Deoliveira, Priscila Rodrigues Armijo, Vishal Kothari, Daniel Surdell

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Background

The placement of the distal catheter of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) can be challenging in patients with a large body habitus. Given the complications associated with ventriculoperitoneal shunts and known infection risk of obese patients, new techniques for VPS placement that bypass the abdominal fat must be sought. By avoiding the abdominal fat, decreased complications and infection risk may be possible.

Objective

The objective of this technical document is to describe a laparoscopic approach to the abdominal cavity during ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery that makes use of a direct tunneling technique into the peritoneal space.

Methods

We perform a ventriculoperitoneal …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Cerebral Radiation Necrosis Secondary To Stereotactic Radiation: A Case Series, Sruti Prathivadhi-Bhayankaram, Jeffrey S. Cooper

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Introduction: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an excellent option for the treatment of numerous central nervous system diseases. There exist several forms of SRS, including gamma-knife surgery (GKS) and cyber-knife surgery. The most significant complication of SRS is the delayed effects of therapeutic radiation, also known as radionecrosis. The current treatment options for radionecrosis have a significant side effect profile and posit challenges for medical management. More recently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) has emerged as an option for treatment with minimal side effects.

Methods: We present a retrospective case series examining ten patients treated with HBO2 after receiving radiotherapy. Of …

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. Beta-secretase (BACE) inhibitors have been proposed as potential therapeutic interventions; however, initiating treatment once disease has significantly progressed has failed to effectively stop or treat disease. Whether BACE inhibition may have efficacy when administered prophylactically in the early stages of AD has been under-investigated. The present studies aimed to evaluate prophylactic treatment of the BACE inhibitor verubecestat in an AD mouse model using the National Institute on Aging (NIA) resources of the Model Organism Development for Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (MODEL-AD) Preclinical Testing Core (PTC) Drug Screening Pipeline.

The Unique Seed Protein Composition Of Quality Protein Popcorn Promotes Growth Of Beneficial Bacteria From The Human Gut Microbiome, Nate Korth, Leandra Parsons, Mallory J. Van Haute, Qinnan Yang, Preston Hurst, James C. Schnable, David R. Holding, Andrew K. Benson

Food for Health: Publications

The effects of fiber, complex carbohydrates, lipids, and small molecules from food matrices on the human gut microbiome have been increasingly studied. Much less is known about how dietary protein can influence the composition and function of the gut microbial community. Here, we used near-isogenic maize lines of conventional popcorn and quality-protein popcorn (QPP) to study the effects of the opaque-2 mutation and associated quality-protein modifiers on the human gut microbiome. Opaque-2 blocks the synthesis of major maize seed proteins (α-zeins), resulting in a compensatory synthesis of new seed proteins that are nutritionally beneficial with substantially higher levels …

Brain vascular staining is very important for understanding cerebrovascular pathologies. 4% paraformaldehyde is considered the gold standard fixation technique for immunohistochemistry and it revolutionized the examination of proteins in fixed tissues. However, this fixation technique produces inconsistent immunohistochemical staining results due to antigen masking. Here, we test a new fixation protocol using 3% glyoxal and demonstrate that this method improves the staining of the brain vasculature, pericytes, and tight junction proteins compared to 4% paraformaldehyde. Use of this new fixation technique will provide more detailed information about vascular protein expressions, their distributions, and colocalizations with other proteins at the molecular …

Metabolites From Trypanosome-Infected Cattle As Sensitive Biomarkers For Animal Trypanosomosis, Merid N. Getahun, John Ngiela, John Mark O. Makwatta, Peter Ahuya, Tawich K. Simon, Samuel K. Kamau, Baldwyn Torto, Daniel Masiga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Trypanosomes are important global livestock and human pathogens of public health importance. Elucidating the chemical mechanisms of trypanosome-relevant host interactions can enhance the design and development of a novel, next-generation trypanosomosis diagnostics. However, it is unknown how trypanosome infection affects livestock volatile odors. Here, we show that Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax infections induced dihydro-β- ionone and junenol, while abundance of dihydro-α-ionone, phenolics, p-cresol, and 3-propylphenol significantly elevated in cow urine. These biomarkers of trypanosome infection are conserved in cow breath and the urine metabolites of naturally infected cows, regardless of population, diet, or environment differences. Furthermore, treating trypanosome-infected cows …
