Revising An Order Set To Standardize The Workflow For The Outpatient Intravenous Diuretic Therapy Clinic In The Cardiac Cath Lab Holding Area, Mackenzie Trent Rasnake

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of hospital admissions and readmissions. This produces costly hospital bills and detrimental effects on healthcare systems (Babar et al., 2020). It has been shown that intravenous (IV) diuretic therapy in the outpatient setting will reduce HF-related hospital readmissions (Abougergi et al., 2021). Outpatient IV diuretic therapy clinics are crucial for this reason. Revising an order set for the outpatient IV diuretic therapy clinic in the Cardiac Cath Lab holding area will reduce patient length of stay, improve nurse-provider communication, and increase patient and nurse satisfaction. Utilizing the Secure Chat feature within the electronic …

Walking To Improve Outcomes In Patients With Type Ii Diabetes, Kelley Leigh Sanders Jul 2022

Walking To Improve Outcomes In Patients With Type Ii Diabetes, Kelley Leigh Sanders

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Walking is a simple, feasible, and effective exercise modality in which providers can instruct patients as a component of type II diabetic treatment plans. Many patients are overwhelmed when given instructions to exercise and therefore never begin. Lack of exercise contributes to poor glycemic control and adverse outcomes. Also, gym memberships can be expensive resulting in patients forgoing exercise altogether. The purpose of this DNP scholarly project was to conduct research outcomes which may enlighten providers to prescribe exercise interventions by providing evidence walking 45 minutes three times a week can improve glycemic control among type II diabetic patients. Also, …

The Effect Of Trauma-Informed Care Education On Improving Knowledge And Confidence Of Clinicians Caring For Women In A Labor And Delivery Setting, Claire Annaliese Wycoff

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The birthing process can be profoundly emotionally, mentally, and physically strenuous for women. Many women feel a loss of sense of control during their labor and birth experience. While trauma during the birthing process can happen to anyone, women with a history of sexual trauma are more likely to experience retraumatization during birth. Health care workers have the ability to exacerbate the patient’s trauma or promote healing through the care they provide. The lack of provider and nurse education in trauma-informed care is related to women’s experiences of secondary trauma during labor and childbirth and can cause prolonged complications for …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is one of the most aggressive and lethal cancers. Surgical resection is the only curable treatment option, but it is available for only a small fraction of patients at the time of diagnosis. With current therapeutic regimens, the average 5-year survival rate is less than 10% in pancreatic cancer patients. Immunotherapy has emerged as one of the most promising treatment options for multiple solid tumors of advanced stage. However, its clinical efficacy is suboptimal in most clinical trials on pancreatic cancer. Current studies have suggested that the tumor microenvironment is likely the underlying barrier affecting immunotherapy drug …

Phospholipids are ligands for nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) that regulate transcriptional programs relevant to normal physiology and disease. Here, we demonstrate that mimicking phospholipid-NR interactions is a robust strategy to improve agonists of liver receptor homolog-1 (LRH-1), a therapeutic target for colitis. Conventional LRH-1 modulators only partially occupy the binding pocket, leaving vacant a region important for phospholipid binding and allostery. Therefore, we constructed a set of molecules with elements of natural phospholipids appended to a synthetic LRH-1 agonist. We show that the phospholipid-mimicking groups interact with the targeted residues in crystal structures and improve binding affinity, LRH-1 transcriptional activity, …

Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor arising from bone-forming mesenchymal cells in children and adolescents. Despite efforts to understand the biology of the disease and identify novel therapeutics, the survival of osteosarcoma patients remains dismal. We have concurrently profiled the copy number and gene expression of 226 osteosarcoma samples as part of the Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures (SPECS) initiative. Our results demonstrate the heterogeneous landscape of osteosarcoma in younger populations by showing the presence of genome-wide copy number abnormalities occurring both recurrently among samples and in a high frequency. Insulin growth factor receptor 1 (IGF1R) is a …

Faculty Publications

The current study aims to investigate the mediating effect of perceived control over the future and the moderating effect of empathy on the association between stressful experiences and PTSD symptoms among college students in China in response to COVID-19. A sample of 1,225 college students (70.69% were female, M age=20.22 years, SD=2.02) were recruited using web-based surveys at wave 1 (W1) and wave 2 (W2) longitudinally. Results showed that COVID-19-related stressful experiences were significantly associated with PTSD symptoms. Perceived control over the future partially mediated the relationship between these two variables (indirect effect size=0.09, p < 0.01). Empathy significantly moderated the path from perceived control over the future to PTSD symptoms, suggesting that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of empathy. Findings suggest a protective effect of perceived control over the future on college students’ PTSD symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Such a protective effect was intensified by empathy. Future intervention to manage PTSD symptoms should be tailored to positive future expectations and empathy.
