Medication Administration Errors: Actions, Barriers And Preventions, Alyssa Slone Jul 2022

Medication Administration Errors: Actions, Barriers And Preventions, Alyssa Slone

University Honors Program

Nurses play a huge role in the medication administration process. Medication administration errors have been around for a while and keep increasing in number. Communication amongst healthcare professionals helps prevent medication errors from happening. Communication increases the knowledge that patients have about their care to reduce any adverse errors that could occur. Medication administration programs, like MedEye and IndentRx, help prevent medication errors. A way to familiarize nurses with medication is to start implementing the administration process in the nursing program curriculum. There are different influential factors that can result in medication errors. The similar packaging of the medications alongside …

The Root Of The Growing Mental Illness Epidemic In Elementary Children, Rayanne Brown Jul 2022

The Root Of The Growing Mental Illness Epidemic In Elementary Children, Rayanne Brown

University Honors Program

This research determined important contributions to the mental illness epidemic in elementary children to find if mental illness in current American society is based on bias or science. Some of the researched contributions include use of technology, family dynamics, proper use of medical terminology, physical health, and the diagnosis process, and more. Many recent articles supported the possibility that mental health awareness has become too common, resulting in overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment in elementary children. In all, society views mental illness through a different lens to encourage victims of mental illness to reach out for treatment, but the added attention …

Healthcare Disparities Among African Americans, Chantilay M. Ruffin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Throughout healthcare there are numerous factors that play a role in and out of the healthcare setting such as: gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic and disability status1. Having a diverse environment is an important accomplishment to strive for because it is directly related to increased patient health outcomes and quality of life2. For centuries African Americans have faced adversity with regard to the health care system. They have not been granted the same opportunities to access health information when compared to others. Kumar and West imply that racism, class inequality, financial hardship, and poverty are major contributors in the widening health care …

Eosinophilic airway inflammatory disease is associated with bronchial asthma, with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) typical of refractory type 2 airway inflammation. CCL4 produced at local inflammatory sites is involved in them via the accumulation and activation of type 2 inflammatory cells, including eosinophils. The detailed mechanism of CCL4 production remains unclear, and also the possibility it could function as a biomarker of type 2 airway inflammation remains unresolved. In this study, we evaluated CCL4 mRNA expression and production via the TSLP receptor (TSLPR) and toll-like receptors (TLRs) or proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR2) in BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells co-incubated with purified eosinophils …

Patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) who have no visible residual disease (R0) after primary surgery have the best clinical outcomes, followed by patients who undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and have a response enabling interval cytoreductive surgery. Clinically useful biomarkers for predicting these outcomes are still lacking. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recognized as liquid biopsy-based biomarkers for early cancer detection and disease surveillance in other disease settings. In this study, we performed extensive molecular characterization of serum-derived EVs and correlated the findings with therapeutic outcomes in patients with HGSC. Using EV-DNA whole-genome sequencing and EV-RNA sequencing, we identified …

Two-Pore Channel Blockade By Phosphoinositide Kinase Inhibitors Ym201636 And Pi-103 Determined By A Histidine Residue Near Pore-Entrance, Canwei Du, Xin Guan, Jiusheng Yan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Human two-pore channels (TPCs) are endolysosomal cation channels and play an important role in NAADP-evoked Ca2+ release and endomembrane dynamics. We found that YM201636, a PIKfyve inhibitor, potently inhibits PI(3,5)P2-activated human TPC2 with an IC50 of 0.16 μM. YM201636 also effectively inhibits NAADP-activated TPC2 and a constitutively-open TPC2 L690A/L694A mutant channel; whereas it exerts little effect when applied in the channel's closed state. PI-103, a YM201636 analog and an inhibitor of PI3K and mTOR, also inhibits human TPC2 with an IC50 of 0.64 μM. With mutational, virtual docking, and molecular dynamic simulation analyses, we found that YM201636 and PI-103 directly …

Faculty Research 2022

Although the route to generate microRNAs (miRNAs) is often depicted as a linear series of sequential and constitutive cleavages, we now appreciate multiple alternative pathways as well as diverse strategies to modulate their processing and function. Here, we identify an unusually profound regulatory role of conserved loop sequences in vertebrate pre-mir-144, which are essential for its cleavage by the Dicer RNase III enzyme in human and zebrafish models. Our data indicate that pre-mir-144 dicing is positively regulated via its terminal loop, and involves the ILF3 complex (NF90 and its partner NF45/ILF2). We provide further evidence that this regulatory switch involves …

Stimulants are effective in treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Psychiatrist Charles Bradley first made this discovery in 1937 when he found that children treated with amphetamines showed improvements in school performance and behavior. Between 1995 and 2008, stimulants to treat ADHD increased six-fold among American adults and adolescents at an annual rate of 6.5%. Stimulants without a prescription, known as nonmedical use or misuse, have also increased. The highest rates of nonmedical prescription drug misuse in the United States are seen most notably in young adults between 18 and 25 years, based on data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health …

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have started to find their role in the modern healthcare system. DNNs are being developed for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning, and outcome prediction for various diseases. With the increasing number of applications of DNNs in modern healthcare, their trustworthiness and reliability are becoming increasingly important. An essential aspect of trustworthiness is detecting the performance degradation and failure of deployed DNNs in medical settings. The softmax output values produced by DNNs are not a calibrated measure of model confidence. Softmax probability numbers are generally higher than the actual model confidence. The model confidence-accuracy gap further increases for …

Enteric fever infections remain a significant public health issue, with up to 20 million infections per year. Increasing rates of antibiotic resistant strains have rendered many first-line antibiotics potentially ineffective. Genotype 4.3.1 (H58) is the main circulating lineage of S. Typhi in many South Asian countries and is associated with high levels of antibiotic resistance. The emergence and spread of extensively drug resistant (XDR) typhoid strains has increased the need for a rapid molecular test to identify and track these high-risk lineages for surveillance and vaccine prioritisation. Current methods require samples to be cultured for several days, followed by DNA …

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the interdependency of healthcare systems and research organizations on manufacturers and suppliers of personnel protective equipment (PPE) and the need for well-trained personnel who can react quickly to changing working conditions. Reports on challenges faced by research laboratory workers (RLWs) are rare in contrast to the lived experience of hospital health care workers. We report on experiences gained by RLWs (e.g., molecular scientists, pathologists, autopsy assistants) who significantly contributed to combating the pandemic under particularly challenging conditions due to increased workload, sickness and interrupted PPE supply chains. RLWs perform a broad spectrum of work with …

NAFLD can occur in non-obese individuals with BMI < 25 kg/m2. Our goal was to examine the prevalence and clinical factors associated with non-obese NAFLD using vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) with controlled attenuation parameter which estimates steatosis and fibrosis among US adults. We aggregated data from the 2017−2018 cycle of NHANES and included adults (age ≥ 20 years) with BMI < 25 kg/m2 with complete data for the survey, medical examination, and VCTE along with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). We excluded participants with risks of other liver diseases. We considered patients to have non-obese NAFLD if CAP was >285 dB/m, or non-obese NAFLD fibrosis if this CAP criteria was met and liver stiffness was >8.6 kPa. We calculated the adjusted OR and 95% CI for associations with non-obese NAFLD using multivariable logistic regression. The prevalence of non-obese NAFLD was 6.2% and Asian Americans (12.2%) had the highest non-obese NAFLD prevalence. Clinical factors associated with non-obese NAFLD were advanced age and metabolic syndrome (ORadjusted = 6.8, 95% CI 3.0−15.5). In a separate model, we found elevated glucose (ORadjusted = 4.1, 95% CI 2.1−7.9), triglycerides (ORadjusted = 3.8, 95% CI 1.7−8.5), and …
