Social Media-Based Professional Development Of Physical Education Teachers In China, Yue Xu, Zhihua Yin
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
In recent years, social media has played an important role in the professional development(PD)of physical education (PE) teachers (Jeffrey P. Carpenter & Stephen Harvey, 2020). There is a wealth of research on the professional development of PE teachers, but few relevant studies examined social media-based PDs. The purpose of this study was to specifically explore the research interests and changes in the PD of PE teachers in social media, and to explore the potential research space in this field. In this literature review, we followed three steps to conduct literature search. We used the following keywords: “social media”, OR “Wechat/Weibo”, …
Concussion And Mental Health: Case Series, Haley M. Clark
Concussion And Mental Health: Case Series, Haley M. Clark
All NMU Master's Theses
Concussion is the most common traumatic brain injury in the United States, and is thought to lead to adverse effects on mental health. No studies to date have examined mental health throughout concussion recovery. This project examined the effect of concussion on three aspects of mental health: anxiety (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale), depression (Beck’s Depression Inventory), and aggression, (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire) at three time points (baseline, mid-season, and postseason) and if the athlete had a concussion, they completed the questionnaire once upon diagnosis, bi-weekly until return-to-play, and bi-weekly for two weeks after being cleared for participation. Each concussion showed an …

Management Of Youth Sport-Related Concussion By Urban And Rural Practitioners: A Pilot Study, Brett R. Fox
All NMU Master's Theses
Sport-related concussions (SRC) occur at alarming rates among high school athletes (ages 13-18), which made the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies classify it as an “epidemic”. If improperly managed, physical, mental, and emotional consequences can occur for SRC patients. Due to these consequences all 50 states in the US have passed legislation requiring medical release from a practitioner before a student-athlete can return to athletics following an SRC, yet there is no universally accepted consensus on how to medically manage this common injury. A 22-item, validated survey was distributed to Michigan practitioners who sign off on …
Investigating Conserved Mechanisms For Embryonic Eye Regrowth In Xenopus Laevis, Cindy Kha
Investigating Conserved Mechanisms For Embryonic Eye Regrowth In Xenopus Laevis, Cindy Kha
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Regeneration is a complex process to replace or restore tissue after damage. However, animals vary in their ability to regenerate tissue, and humans are limited in their abilities. Understanding how regeneration occurs in highly regenerative vertebrates, such as in Xenopus laevis frogs will lead to defining common regeneration mechanisms. In recent years, eye regeneration research in Xenopus laevis tadpoles provided new promising insight into the mechanisms necessary for repair of damaged eye tissue. Much progress has been made towards understanding the regenerative capability of the complex eye since Xenopus tadpoles can regenerate mature eye tissues, including: the optic nerve, retina, …
Cognitive Testing For Sport Concussion: The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment And Cognitive Testing (Impact), Julia E. Maietta
Cognitive Testing For Sport Concussion: The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment And Cognitive Testing (Impact), Julia E. Maietta
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Sport concussion is among the most common injuries for an athlete to experience during sport participation. Because of the complex pathophysiological process that affects the brain during and after concussion, symptoms can be heterogeneous in presence and severity. Although most acute symptoms (e.g., headache, slowed processing speed, loss of consciousness, irritability, depression, anxiety) resolve within seven to 10 days for most athletes, there is evidence that higher initial symptom burden and other genetically based differences can lead to longer symptom duration and complicated recovery post-concussion. Because structural changes that commonly occur as a result of concussion (e.g., diffuse axonal injury) …

Predictor Of Hospital Closure In The United States, Haniyeh Shariatmadari
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Hospital closures have recently been more common and a crucial concern in the United States since they can influence many aspects of patients' health conditions. This situation has led many scholars to investigate the adverse effect of hospitals closure. Previous research has well documented the effects of a hospital closure. However, there is a lack of studies on the predictor of a hospital closure. To fill this gap, the objective of this longitudinal study is to explore organizational and market factors associated with hospital closure. We used Data from the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid …

Photoreceptors consume glucose supplied by the choriocapillaris to support phototransduction and outer segment (OS) renewal. Reduced glucose supply underlies photoreceptor cell death in inherited retinal degeneration and age-related retinal disease. We have previously shown that restricting glucose transport into the outer retina by conditional deletion of Slc2a1 encoding GLUT1 resulted in photoreceptor loss and impaired OS renewal. However, retinal neurons, glia, and the retinal pigment epithelium play specialized, synergistic roles in metabolite supply and exchange, and the cell-specific map of glucose uptake and utilization in the retina is incomplete. In these studies, we conditionally deleted Slc2a1 in a pan-retinal or …

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis of thyroid samples aids in risk stratification of cytologically indeterminate nodules and contributes to our understanding of molecular mechanisms in thyroid neoplasia. Several genes, including BRAF, RAS, and EIF1AX, are known to play a role in thyroid tumorigenesis. Here we report a case of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in which a single lesion harbored a novel YWHAG-BRAF fusion and EIF1AX mutation and displayed mixed morphological findings. The patient is a 74-year-old female with multiple incidentally discovered thyroid nodules, two of which were sampled by ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA). Cytologic diagnosis for both nodules was suspicious …

Syphilis is easily detectable and treatable with the appropriate medical attention, yet national incidence rates have been on the rise since reaching an all-time low in 2000 (Shockman et al, 2014). Similar to HIV, men who have sex with other men (MSM), represent most syphilis transmission, yet in recent years, syphilis rates have concerningly increased among both genders and among all racial/ethnic groups (CDC, 2019).
Methods:
Surveillance data was collected on all syphilis cases reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) regarding demographics and risk factors of cases. Variables were analyzed using chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, …
The Patient-Centered Medical Home And The Value Of Heightened Care Coordination: A Systematic Literature Review, Garrett L. Vetter
The Patient-Centered Medical Home And The Value Of Heightened Care Coordination: A Systematic Literature Review, Garrett L. Vetter
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Health care spending in the United States continues to increase at a pace that far exceeds inflation. Representing a greater proportion of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) than any other country, costs associated with health care services in the U.S. lend support to growing concern regarding the sustainability of current systems. Furthermore, the fragmented nature of the current landscape often presents challenges to the provision of high-quality and efficient care. Satisfaction among both patients and health care providers, alike, suffers under the weight of increasing regulatory burden, the lack of integrated medical records systems, and growing complexity among health …

Nursing Perspectives And Opinions On Early Or Delayed Sepsis Treatment: A Mixed Methods Approach, Pamela L. Harris
Nursing Perspectives And Opinions On Early Or Delayed Sepsis Treatment: A Mixed Methods Approach, Pamela L. Harris
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Purpose. Each year at least 1.7 million adults in America develop sepsis. Sepsis can lead to life threatening organ dysfunction, severe hypotension, and death when severe sepsis or septic shock is involved. Sepsis is responsible for 50% of acute kidney injury (AKI), which is the most common form of organ dysfunction seen in critical care. Sepsis associated AKI results in loss of, or decreased renal function, is associated with adverse long-term outcomes, and carries a higher mortality rate than non-septic AKI, sepsis without AKI, or septic shock without AKI. Surviving sepsis guidelines suggests a 1-hour window from the time of …
Inflammatory Response Following Hemorrhagic Stroke: The Role Of Cytokines, Patrick Devlin
Inflammatory Response Following Hemorrhagic Stroke: The Role Of Cytokines, Patrick Devlin
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Hemorrhagic stroke is a dangerous form of stroke resulting from the rupturing of weakened blood vessels, releasing blood that increases intracranial pressure and causes the death of surrounding tissue. Treatment options are improving but remain limited, as evidenced by this condition being characterized by high rates of mortality as well as long-term morbidity. Unregulated inflammatory responses that occur following injury may be partially to blame for these poor outcomes. In response to any injury, the immune system releases cytokines to recruit immune cell activation and promote inflammation. But after hemorrhagic stroke, whether aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), …
