A Novel Prognostic 7-Methylguanosine Signature Reflects Immune Microenvironment And Alternative Splicing In Glioma Based On Multi-Omics Analysis, Zihan Wang, Zhiwei Zhong, Zehua Jiang, Zepeng Chen, Yuequn Chen, Yimin Xu
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Glioma is the most common type of central nervous system tumor with increasing incidence. 7-methylguanosine (m7G) is one of the diverse RNA modifications that is known to regulate RNA metabolism and its dysregulation was associated with various cancers. However, the expression pattern of m7G regulators and their roles in regulating tumor immune microenvironments (TIMEs) as well as alternative splicing events (ASEs) in glioma has not been reported. In this study, we showed that m7G regulators displayed a close correlation with each other and most of them were differentially expressed between normal and glioma tissues. Two m7G signatures were then constructed …

Microglia, the resident innate immune cells of the brain, become more highly reactive with aging and diseased conditions. In collaboration with other cell types in brains, microglia can contribute both to worsened outcome following stroke or other neurodegenerative diseases and to the recovery process by changing their phenotype toward reparative microglia. Recently, IFITM3 (a member of the "interferon-inducible transmembrane" family) has been revealed as a molecular mediator between amyloid pathology and neuroinflammation. Expression of IFITM3 in glial cells, especially microglia following stroke, is not well described. Here, we present evidence that ischemic stroke causes an increase in IFITM3 expression along …

Patients with coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) may present with a wide range of symptoms ranging from asymptomatic to critically ill. Approximately 10-14% of patients require hospitalization. Those individuals requiring hospitalization can deteriorate rapidly with worsening hypoxemia or new-onset pneumonia, resulting in 20-30% of patients developing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
When refractory to medical management, severe ARDS secondary to other illnesses has been successfully treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We completed a comprehensive literature review of ECMO utilization for patients with severe COVID-19 who were unresponsive to critical care management. Of the 1419 patients with a reported diagnosis …

This longitudinal qualitative study examines parental experiences following prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD). Researchers conducted 62 interviews with members of 17 families during pregnancy and after birth to understand emotional processing, coping strategies, and evolving informational needs. Parents initially sought to balance hope with efforts to comprehend the medical diagnosis and its implications. Over time, as prognostic uncertainty decreased following birth, parents reported increased desire for active involvement in decision-making and clinical care planning. The study identifies shifts in emotional orientation and informational priorities across the prenatal and postnatal periods. These findings suggest that clinicians should tailor communication …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
When improperly managed, type 2 diabetes mellitus is a serious and chronic health condition with far-reaching repercussions for individuals, families, and societies. In the United States, 34.2 million individuals live with diabetes, and 90%-95% have type 2 diabetes. While the United States healthcare system faces the monumental task of improving diabetic care outcomes and associated costs, publications have established that motivational interviewing (MI) can improve self-efficacy and associated self-care behaviors of type 2 diabetics, resulting in improved hemoglobin A1c values. Thus, this scholarly project’s intent was to track participant hemoglobin A1c values over three months, measure participant self-efficacy and self-care …

Native American Mental Health: Adding Culture To The Conversation, Margaret Rose
Population Health Research Brief Series
American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) experience higher rates of depression, suicide, and psychological distress compared to other communities in the United States. Despite this, they are less likely to receive mental health services due to barriers such as lack of resources, limited mental health service access, stigma, and mistrust of providers. This issue brief describes the influence of colonialism on AI/AN mental health and discusses how barriers to mental health treatment can be addressed by integrating AI/AN culture into traditional mental health services and increasing AI/AN presence in mental health occupations.

The critical role of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) in regulating cardiac function has been well documented for >3 decades. Targeting GRK2 has therefore been extensively studied as a novel approach to treating cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about its role in hemostasis and thrombosis. We provide here the first evidence that GRK2 limits platelet activation and regulates the hemostatic response to injury. Deletion of GRK2 in mouse platelets causes increased platelet accumulation after laser-induced injury in the cremaster muscle arterioles, shortens tail bleeding time, and enhances thrombosis in adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP)-induced pulmonary thromboembolism and in FeCl3-induced carotid …

Breast cancers (BrCas) that overexpress oncogenic tyrosine kinase receptor HER2 are treated with HER2-targeting antibodies (such as trastuzumab) or small-molecule kinase inhibitors (such as lapatinib). However, most patients with metastatic HER2+BrCa have intrinsic resistance and nearly all eventually become resistant to HER2-targeting therapy. Resistance to HER2-targeting drugs frequently involves transcriptional reprogramming associated with constitutive activation of different signaling pathways. We have investigated the role of CDK8/19 Mediator kinase, a regulator of transcriptional reprogramming, in the response of HER2+BrCa to HER2-targeting drugs. CDK8 was in the top 1% of all genes ranked by correlation with shorter relapse-free …

MSN Capstone Projects
Occupational burnout has long since been a problem but has only recently been acknowledged as the spark behind the fire that has led to our critical nursing shortage. Considering the emotional aftermath of the pandemic and the hardships that a strained economy will bring, we must learn how to extinguish these flames rather than adding fuel to this complex problem. Burnout is causing a vicious cycle within the healthcare workforce that will lead to detrimental effects on quality patient care. We must learn how to break the cycle.
The cycle starts with experienced nurses leaving unprecedented numbers and units primarily …

Conventional Transradial Access Versus Distal Transradial Access For Coronary Angiography And Interventions, Ahmed K. A. Ghany Hassan
Conventional Transradial Access Versus Distal Transradial Access For Coronary Angiography And Interventions, Ahmed K. A. Ghany Hassan
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Introduction For so many years, femoral access has been the standard access for all interventional cardiologists performing coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary interventions. In the past 15 years, radial access gained more fame over femoral access as it has a lower risk of bleeding and it is more convenient to patients due to early mobilization and less hospital stay. Recently, the distal transradial access in the anatomical snuffbox has emerged as a new access for coronary procedures that carries some advantages over the standard proximal transradial access. These advantages include radial artery preservation in patients who may use radial artery …
