Background: Haemodialysis is the most common treatment method in Australia for individuals requiring renal replacement therapy. Although it is known that the residual renal function in these patients has many advantages for their overall health outcomes and that the residual urine volume production is also declining over time, it is unknown how fast this functional decline occurs when patients are embarking on their first year on haemodialysis. Aim: This scoping review sought to determine if the functional decline in renal residual function in the first year of haemodialysis has been previously investigated, documented or quantified. Method: The scoping review was …

Echo intensity (EI) is a novel tool for assessing muscle quality. EI has traditionally been reported as the mean of the pixel histogram, with 0 and 255 arbitrary units (A.U.) representing excellent and poor muscle quality, respectively. Recent work conducted in youth and younger and older adults suggested that analyzing specific EI bands, rather than the mean, may provide unique insights into the effectiveness of exercise and rehabilitation interventions. As our previous work showed deterioration of muscle quality after knee joint immobilization, we sought to investigate whether the increase in EI following disuse was limited to specific EI bands. Thirteen …

Background Malnutrition is considered a major public health challenge and is associated with a range of health issues, including childhood stunting. Stunting is a reliable and well-recognized indicator of chronic childhood malnutrition. The objective of this study is to determine the risk factors associated with stunting among 17,490 children below five years of age in Bangladesh. Methods Correlates of child stunting were examined using data generated by a cross-sectional cluster survey conducted in Bangladesh in 2019. The data includes a total of 17,490 children (aged < 5 years) from 64,400 households. Multiple logistic regressions were used to determine the risk factors associated with child stunting and severe stunting. Results The prevalence of stunting and severe stunting for children was 25.96% and 7.97%, respectively. Children aged 24 to < 36 months [Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.65, 95% CI: 2.30, 3.05] and aged 36 to < 48 months [OR = 2.33, 95% CI: 2.02, 2.69] had more risk of stunting compared to the children aged < 6 months. Children from Sylhet division had the greatest risk of stunting of all the eight divisions [OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.46]. Children of secondary complete or higher educated mothers were less likely to develop stunting [OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.56, 0.79] compared with children of mothers having no education at all. Similarly, children of secondary complete or higher educated father [OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.63, 0.87] were found to have lower risk of stunting compared with children whose father hadn’t any education. Substantially lower risk of stunting was observed among children whose mother and father both completed secondary education or above [OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.69]. Children from the richest households [OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.58] had 51% lower odds of stunting compared to children from the poorest households. Conclusions After controlling for socioeconomic and demographic factors, parental education and household position in the wealth index were found to be the most important determinants of child stunting in Bangladesh.

Recent articles have highlighted the importance of incorporating implementation science concepts into pandemic-related research. However, limited research has been documented to date regarding implementation outcomes that may be unique to COVID-19 vaccinations and how to utilize implementation strategies to address vaccine program-related implementation challenges. To address these gaps, we formed a global COVID-19 implementation workgroup of implementation scientists who met weekly for over a year to review the available literature and learn about ongoing research during the pandemic. We developed a hierarchy to prioritize the applicability of "lessons learned" from the vaccination-related implementation literature. We identified applications of existing implementation …

Diurnal oscillation persists throughout the body and plays an essential role in maintaining physiological homeostasis. Disruption of diurnal rhythm contributes to many diseases including type 2 diabetes. The regulatory mechanism of the transcription-translation feedback loop (TTFL) of core clock genes is well-established, while a systematic study across all regulatory layers of gene expression, including gene transcription, RNA translation, and DNA binding protein (DBP) activities, is still lacking. We comprehensively bioinformatics analyzed the rhythmicity of gene transcription, mature RNA abundance, protein abundance and DBP activity using publicly available omic-datasets from mouse livers. We found that the core clock genes,

Carotenoids are naturally abundant fat-soluble pigmented compounds, with dietary, antioxidant and vision protection advantages. The dietary carotenoids, Beta Carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, complexed with in bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous solution, were explored using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate and quantify their spectral signatures. UV visible absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the linearity of responses over the concentration range employed (0.05-1mg/ml) and, of the 4 source wavelengths, 785nm, 660nm, 532nm, 473nm, 532nm was chosen to provide the optimal response. After preprocessing to remove water and BSA contributions, and correct for self-absorption, a partial least squares model with R2 …

The aetiology of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) and triggers of relapse are poorly understood. Vitamin D (vitD) is an important immunomodulator, potentially responsible for the observed latitudinal differences between granulomatous and non-granulomatous AAV phenotypes. A narrow ultraviolet B spectrum induces vitD synthesis (vitD-UVB) via the skin. We hypothesised that prolonged periods of low ambient UVB (and by extension vitD deficiency) are associated with the granulomatous form of the disease and an increased risk of AAV relapse.

Levels Of Milk Glycosaminoglycans In Holstein Cows With Clinical And Subclinical Mastitis, Nicolas Caggiano, Elisa Crespi, Gonzalo Fiorini, Emilio De Simone
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland whose diagnosis is based on clinical criteria and the determination of inflammatory markers. The disease is mainly caused by bacteria causing intra-mammary infections. The etiological agent/s are detected by milk culture or by molecular biology approaches. However, these methodologies are unpractical for on-farm diagnosis, where rapid decisions must be made when infected animals are detected. For this reason, the levels of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in milk were evaluated as a tool for the diagnosis of mastitis. GAGs levels were determined by the dimethylmethylene blue assay (DMMB) method in milk from healthy animals and …

Two fat sources, soybean oil (SO) and refined poultry oil (RPO), and 4 emulsifiers (control, lysolecithin, lysophospholipid, and bile acids) were used in this experiment. Thirteen hundred and sixty (1360) birds (ROSS - 308) were divided into 8 groups having 5 replicates, 34 birds in each. Energy efficiency, feed conversion (FCR), and protein efficiency ratios were improved in birds receiving SO than RPO diets. Weight gain, FCR, feed intake, and dressing percentage were increased in broiler birds receiving bile acid than those given lyso-phospholipid and lysolecithin (p < 0.05). Cooking loss was greater (p < 0.05) in broiler birds given RPO than those fed SO. Birds receiving bile acid had greater (p < 0.05) water holding capacity of chest meat than other fat emulsifiers. Bile acids in broiler diet presented higher (p < 0.05) digestibility of crude protein and ether extract as compared to other treatments. Bile acid supplemented diets had a minimum (p < 0.05) cost of production per kg live weight than other fat emulsifiers. Therefore, the use of bile acids with RPO diets can increase nutrient digestibility, growth performance, meat quality, and economic efficiency in broiler production systems.

The body conformation traits, which support higher production and longer productive life are very important to breed future dairy buffaloes. Bayesian multiple-trait analysis was performed in biometric traits of Murrah buffaloes to estimate the (co)variance components using an animal model and Gibbs sampling. The model included the fixed effects of parity, season of calving, period of calving, and age group at the time of recording of traits. Random effects included were additive genetic and residual effects. Posterior means of heritability distribution for body length (BL), height at wither (HW), rump width (RW), hip bone distance (HBD), rump slope (RS), brisket …

Some Hematological Parameters And Enzyme Histochemistry Of Peripheral Bloodleukocytes In Kivircik Sheep, Mehmet Faruk Aydin, İhsan Kisadere
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of the present study was to determine some hematological parameters (RBC, WBC, HCT, HGB, MCH, MCHC, MCV, and PLT), the presence and percentages of ANAE and AcP-ase positivities in leukocytes and the differential leukocyte count in Kivircik sheep. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 40 (rams = 20; ewes= 20) healthy, 1-year-old sheep. MCH and MCHC values were found statistically higher in rams than ewes (p < 0.05). Mean percentages of ANAE-positive PBL were defined as 74.16 ± 11.94% in ewes and 70.33 ± 8.39% in rams. It was not determined any significant changes according to sex. On the other hand, the percentages of ACP were determined as 67.12 ± 6.54% in ewes and 66.71 ± 6.58% in rams. It was not found any significant differences according to sex. For ANAE enzyme activity, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophilic granulocytes showed a positive reaction. For ACP enzyme activity, although lymphocytes presented positivity, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils were negative. The ratio of lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophile, eosinophile, and basophile of Kivircik ewes and rams were found as 64.35 ± 5.74%, 60.64 ± 8.85%; 3.41 ± 1.27%, 3.82 ± 1.42%; 27.58 ± 5.46%, 30.94 ± 8.71%; 2.41 ± 0.93%, 2.88 ± 1.45%; 1.76 ± 0.75%, 1.29 ± 0.58%, respectively. The difference between mean values was not found significant according to sex (p > 0.05). In conclusion, our study showed that enzyme histochemical methods can be used for identifying peripheral blood cells and can provide facilitates for early diagnosis of immune system-related disorders …

Different challenges are being applied in the poultry industry in order to protect animal health and to increase immunity and production. The supplementation of microbial phytase is essential in terms of both reducing the inorganic phytase rate and contributing to the absorption of other minerals. In this study, a newly isolated microbial phytase was added at different concentrations to the diet together with calcium (Ca$^{2+}$) and available phosphorus (AP), and the effects of this supplementation on intestinal absorption capacity and Ca$^{2+}$ binding capacity were investigated via morphological measurements and immunohistochemical examination of the duodenum and ileum. For this purpose, 90 …
