The Double Burden Of Intra-Household Malnutrition Among Mother–Child Dyads In South Africa, Puveshni Crozier

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Household-level double burden of malnutrition (HL-DBM) challenges traditional South African vertical malnutrition programs. Research has associated a household with an overweight/obese mother of reproductive age and her under 5-year-old child with signs of undernutrition (wasting, stunting, or thinness) with socioeconomic levels, maternal characteristics, features of the household, and child’s demographics. Grounded in the social determinants of health conceptual framework, this study aimed to investigate the determinants of HL-DBM in South Africa across the reproductive-child health continuum. Using the representative 2017 Wave 5 South African National Income Dynamics Study survey secondary data, a total sample of 314 homes met this non-experimental …

Predictors Of Glycemic Control Among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients In Owerri, Nigeria, Jideuma Ikenna Egwim

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern globally and in Owerri, Nigeria. The deleterious effects of diabetes have been linked to poor glycemic control. According to the International Diabetes Federation, poor glycemic control is reflected in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels greater than 7.0%, which are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Studies have shown a dramatic rise in diabetic complications in Nigeria, particularly in Owerri. However, evidence is lacking on specific risk factors associated with poor glycemic control among DM patients in Owerri. With health insurance assuming a significant position in healthcare service delivery in Nigeria, addressing this …

Perspectives Of Girls, Families, And Healthcare Workers On Accessing Services For Adolescents With Perinatal Hiv In Nigeria, Joseph Fabian Inyang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) include those who were infected from their mother perinatally (PHIV) and those who were infected through sexual behaviors or drug use. Nigeria contributes the largest burden of children born with HIV globally, due to poor implementation of its prevention of mother-to-child transmission program. With advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART), more children and adolescents with HIV survive into adulthood. However, there are challenges to ART including access, uptake, adherence, and risks of long-term exposure. Using the social ecological model and a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study was designed to understand the experiences of adolescent …

Intersectional Approach To Understand Condom Use Behavior Between Black And Latinos Msm And Transgender Women, Vanessa J. Mejia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women has been a focus of scholars since the early 1990s. Researchers have demonstrated that individuals in these communities are at greater risk for adverse health outcomes such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This study examined the relationship between macrosocial structural factors (i.e., housing stability) and the acceptance of risky sexual behavior (RSB) (i.e., condom use) between Black and Latino MSM, and transgender women guided by the health belief model and intersectionality theory. Using a quantitative approach, primary data were collected from MSM and transgender women …

Major Depressive Disorder And Perceived Everyday Discrimination Among The Jamaican Diaspora In The United States., Warren Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Overt racial discrimination in the United States has been supplanted by subtle forms of everyday discrimination known as microaggressions. Researchers have found perceived everyday discrimination (PED) to be associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) among African Americans but have often treated the African American subpopulation as a homogeneous group. The purpose of this cross-sectional study grounded in the theory of microaggression was to illuminate probable associations between microaggressions based on weight, age, gender, ethnicity, and race and lifetime MDD among the Jamaican diaspora in the United States. Secondary data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiologic Surveys were analyzed. Statistically significant associations …

Oncology Providers Barriers To Providing Quality Healthcare Services For Caribbean Women Of Color With Breast Cancer, Michelle Charmaine Garcia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Breast cancer is a global public health issue, and oncology healthcare providers (OHPs’) play a pivotal role in ensuring access to cancer care for their patient population. Caribbean women of color in the United States have the highest death rate of any racial or ethnic group. Strategies have been introduced to reduce this gap, and they still have not addressed the needs of Caribbean women of color, who tend to be diagnosed after developing late-stage breast cancer. No previous studies have explored OHPs' perceptions and lived experiences regarding barriers to healthcare service delivery and access for Caribbean women of color …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sierra Leone faces immense challenges in supporting good quality, woman-centered care, with one of the world's highest maternal mortality ratios of 717 per 100,000 live births. In countries with high maternal mortality, evidence of the fear of disrespect and abuse women usually confront in maternity care is a more solid deterrent to the use of skilled care than commonly recognized barriers, such as cost or distance. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed at understanding the childbirth experiences and perceptions of Sierra Leonean women relating to basic maternal rights. The ecological systems theoretical framework and the respectful maternity care charter conceptual framework …

The Association Between Early Enteral Nutrition And Various Outcomes In Patients Undergoing Ecmo Therapy At Loma Linda University Medical Center, Torrey Mitsunga, Lauren Wheeler

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is a life-saving option for critically ill patients who require either pulmonary and hemodynamic support. ECMO has only been widely adapted for usage in adults over the last few years, and recently at higher rates due to Covid-19. Though ECMO has the potential to save lives, it presents many challenges related to feeding and nourishment of the patients. Currently, data is lacking on how enteral nutrition during ECMO affects outcomes such as the duration of hospitalization, ability to meet calorie and protein goals, and patient survival.

The Efficacy Of Probiotics On Overall Quality Of Life By Gender, Melissa Kalman, Kirsten Soderblom Jan 2022

The Efficacy Of Probiotics On Overall Quality Of Life By Gender, Melissa Kalman, Kirsten Soderblom

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

In the 1950s, German scientist Werner Kollath coined the term probiotic, which is Latin for, “for life”. To be considered a probiotic, a product must consist of live microorganisms and provide health benefits to the host when ingested in sufficient amounts. The microorganisms in probiotics provide numerous health benefits through immunologic mechanisms. Recent research shows probiotics may provide benefits to those experiencing stress, including general anxiety and stressors, as well as improve human immunity and overall quality of life. There is a lack of research concerning probiotics and the differences in physiological responses comparing males and females.

Comparison Of Student Dietary Patterns In The School Of Allied Health Professions' Departments, Randy Song, Sonya Fargo, Jaime Scolastico Jan 2022

Comparison Of Student Dietary Patterns In The School Of Allied Health Professions' Departments, Randy Song, Sonya Fargo, Jaime Scolastico

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

Dietary habits influence many risk factors for cardiometabolic health, including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, which collectively pose substantial health and economic burdens. College students may struggle to get access to or understand how to prepare healthy foods. Students with more nutritional knowledge consume less unhealthful fats and cholesterol, but as independence increases, students are continuously challenged to make healthful food choices. Assessing dietary patterns can be complex and time consuming, though it is a worthwhile endeavor as it sheds light on diet quality and areas of excess and deficiency.
