Preoperative Weight Loss For Patients Undergoing Lumbar Spine Surgery Utilizing Motivational Interviewing To Decrease Postoperative Complications: A Quality Improvement Project, Amanda Welle
Nursing Posters
Do patients who are obese, based on BMI>30 and are offered lumbar spine surgery, who undergo preoperative MI via telehealth to lose weight, compared to those who don’t undergo MI have decreased postoperative complications at 30 days postoperatively?
Conclusions/Implications:
- Results from this QI project suggest a higher BMI class is associated with postoperative complications-wound infection.
- However, given the small sample size no conclusions could be drawn
- This QI project should be replicated on a larger scale
- The process for recruitment and intervention is established. The Neurosurgical providers are supportive of the continued study.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a multisystemic disease that affects more than 370 million people worldwide and costs the U.S. Healthcare System over $245 billion per year (Kahn et al., 2013; Powers et al., 2015). Current diabetes education serves as a beneficial intervention method in the prevention and limitation of disease complications. Nevertheless, the current education regimen does not adequately convey the physiological reasoning behind those recommendations. Creating an educational tool that provides patients with physiological reasoning behind diabetes and treatment methods was needed to improve diabetes understanding. Neighborhood HealthSource expressed a need for easily understandable and accessible pathophysiology-based T2DM …

Relaxin is a pleiotropic hormone shown to confer cardioprotection in several preclinical models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. In the present study, the effects of up-regulating relaxin family peptide receptor 1 (RXFP1) via adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9) vectors were investigated in a mouse model of myocardial infarction. AAV9-RXFP1 vectors were generated and injected in adult male CD1 mice. Up-regulation of Rxfp1 was confirmed via quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and overexpressing animals showed increased sensitivity to relaxin-induced ventricular inotropic response. Overexpressing animals also demonstrated reduced infarct size and preserved cardiac function 24 hours after ischemia-reperfusion. Up-regulation of RXFP1 via AAV9 vectors …

The reference standard for amyloid-PET quantification requires structural MRI (sMRI) for preprocessing in both multi-site research studies and clinical trials. Here we describe rPOP (robust PET-Only Processing), a MATLAB-based MRI-free pipeline implementing non-linear warping and differential smoothing of amyloid-PET scans performed with any of the FDA-approved radiotracers (18F-florbetapir/FBP, 18F-florbetaben/FBB or 18F-flutemetamol/FLUTE). Each image undergoes spatial normalization based on weighted PET templates and data-driven differential smoothing, then allowing users to perform their quantification of choice. Prior to normalization, users can choose whether to automatically reset the origin of the image to the center of mass or proceed with the pipeline with …

The embryonic ectoderm is composed of four domains: neural plate, neural crest, pre-placodal region (PPR) and epidermis. Their formation is initiated during early gastrulation by dorsal-ventral and anterior-posterior gradients of signaling factors that first divide the embryonic ectoderm into neural and non-neural domains. Next, the neural crest and PPR domains arise, either

Individuals who identify as transgender and gender diverse (TGD) are presenting at mental health clinicians’ offices with increasing frequency. Many TGD clients are seeking care related to affirming their gender identity but also may present with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, or other problems forwhich a clinician may commonly provide services. Some clinicians may hesitate to accept TGD clients into their practice if they have little specialized training to work with this population in an affirming manner, especially in more underserved areas where a generalist practice is the norm. Numerous professional associations and experts have developed guidelines for affirmative behavioral …
