Counterfactual Analysis Of Differential Comorbidity Risk Factors In Alzheimer’S Disease And Related Dementias, Yejin Kim, Kai Zhang, Sean I Savitz, Luyao Chen, Paul E Schulz, Xiaoqian Jiang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) is a multifactorial disease that involves several different etiologic mechanisms with various comorbidities. There is also significant heterogeneity in the prevalence of ADRD across diverse demographics groups. Association studies on such heterogeneous comorbidity risk factors are limited in their ability to determine causation. We aim to compare counterfactual treatment effects of various comorbidity in ADRD in different racial groups (African Americans and Caucasians). We used 138,026 ADRD and 1:1 matched older adults without ADRD from nationwide electronic health records, which extensively cover a large population’s long medical history in breadth. We matched African Americans …

Despite Latino Americans having been found to be disproportionally affected by COVID-19, they report higher hesi-tancy to receive the COVID-19 vaccine than non-Hispanic whites. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that influence Puerto Rican's intentions to get the COVID-19 Vaccine. A sample (n = 173) of people who currently lived in Puerto Rico were recruited to complete an online, cross-sectional survey about their intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Demographics and vaccine hesitancy were assessed, and logistic regressions explored relationships between variables and intention to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it became available. When controlling for covar-iates, …

The continued rise in the availability of illicit opioids and opioid-related deaths in the United States has left physicians, researchers, and lawmakers desperate for solutions to this ongoing epidemic. The research into therapeutic options for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) began with the introduction of methadone in the 1960s. The approval of oral naltrexone initially showed much promise, as the drug was observed to be highly potent in antagonizing the effects of opioids while producing no opioid agonist effects of its own and having a favorable side effect profile. Patients that routinely take their naltrexone reported fewer days …

Exploring Stress Relief Methods And The Efficacy For The Houseless At Urban Settings, Lexis Bates

University Honors Theses

When the word "stress" is mentioned to lay people, they might think that their definitions of "stress" would be the same or similar. However, stress may vary by, not only degrees of the adverse circumstances, but also kinds of stressors which make an individual's experience of stress and their coping mechanisms complicated. Stress refers to a state of mental strain or tension resulting from adverse circumstances. Each individual living in society undergoes stress as a part of life. To some degree, stress keeps us motivated to stay alive in this way through survival instincts. However, excess stress may cause chaos …

The New York State Dental Journal

This study examined patient satisfaction and changes in quality of life (QoL) following the orthognathic surgery performed to treat severe dentofacial deformities. The short form of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) instrument was utilized to measure the negative impact related to severe dentofacial deformities on QoL. Ninety-five patients participated in this survey. Respondents reported significant reduction in the overall OHIP-14 score following the orthognathic surgery (p-value<0.0001). Approximately 92% reported post-operative resolution of their chief concerns. In conclusion, orthognathic surgery was found beneficial as it significantly reduced the negative impact of severe skeletal malocclusion on QoL of the patient we surveyed.

Simple Lipoma Mimicking Oral Infiltrating Lipoma: Case Report, Moacyr Tadeu V. Rodrigues Dds, Msc, Judson N. Brasil Dds, Gabriel A. Guillen Dds, Msc, Cláudio F. Nóia Dds, Phd

The New York State Dental Journal

Lipomas are common soft tissue neoplasms, usually present in the trunk and proximal portions of the extremities and less frequent in the mouth. We reported the case of a 51-year-old patient, affected by an intra/extra-oral swelling for 8 months. Aspiration, surgical excision and histopathological examination confirmed that it was a simple oral lipoma, although clinically and surgically, it mimicked an infiltrating lipoma. Conservative surgical treatment, preferably by an intra-oral approach provides less morbidity and less sequelae for patients.
