The Lived Experience Of Older Adults With Visual Impairments And Their Integration Into Social And Recreational Activities In The Long-Term Care Setting: A Phenomenological Study, Julie Ann Conboy Russo Apr 2022

The Lived Experience Of Older Adults With Visual Impairments And Their Integration Into Social And Recreational Activities In The Long-Term Care Setting: A Phenomenological Study, Julie Ann Conboy Russo

Theses & Dissertations

The prevalence of vision loss in the elderly is high. Visual impairment in long-term care (LTC) settings may be a barrier to fully interacting in therapeutic recreational and social activities. Living with visual barriers may hamper safety (i.e., fear of falling and navigating in unfamiliar settings); cognitive ability; and participation in activities leading to isolation, depression, and loss of self-esteem. Decreased stimulation may affect one’s overall happiness and quality of life. A qualitative phenomenological design was followed to capture the lived experience of older adults with visual impairments living in LTC settings and their integration into social and recreational activities …

Augmented Immunomodulation Of Endogenous Marrow-Derived Stem Cells In The Setting Of Acl Rupture, Mackenzie Fleischer, Michael Newton, Samantha Hartner, John A. Driscoll, Anthony Arveschoug, Chritopher C. Vasileff, Kevin Baker

Conference Presentation Abstracts

PURPOSE: Augmentation of MSC immunomodulation is an unexplored, potentially useful therapeutic to combat PTOA following ACLR. Lower kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratios observed in synovial fluid of ACL rupture (ACLR) rats suggests decreased activity of tryptophan metabolizing enzyme, Ido, known to be secreted by MSCs to promote T-reg expansion and Th17 suppression. This study aims to characterize the immunomodulatory capacity of pharmacologically mobilized MSCs in conjunction with exogenously delivered Ido. METHODS: Rats (N = 48) underwent ACLR to evaluate the effects of mobilized MCSs on Ido1 and inflammatory cytokine expression profiles in the synovial fluid. Additionally, rats (N = 160) underwent ACLR to …

TIAM Rac1-associated GEF 1 (TIAM1) regulates RAC1 signaling pathways that affect the control of neuronal morphogenesis and neurite outgrowth by modulating the actin cytoskeletal network. To date, TIAM1 has not been associated with a Mendelian disorder. Here, we describe five individuals with bi-allelic TIAM1 missense variants who have developmental delay, intellectual disability, speech delay, and seizures. Bioinformatic analyses demonstrate that these variants are rare and likely pathogenic. We found that the Drosophila ortholog of TIAM1, still life (sif), is expressed in larval and adult central nervous system (CNS) and is mainly expressed in a subset of neurons, but not in …

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Prevention And Detection In Covid-19 Patients, Bethany Sloane Melega

Student Scholar Showcase

COVID-19 has impacts on patient health beyond the hospital. The trauma that patients, and families of patients, can experience during an admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) can last long after discharge from the ICU and the hospital in general. The psychological and physical impacts of ICU hospitalization can cause patients to experience Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). PICS is the culmination of symptoms that persist after a critical illness that involve all aspects of a patient’s physical and mental well-being and can significantly affect family life and increase recovery time. Due to the strict personal-protective equipment (PPE) usage …

Examination Of An Individual-Level Stigma Reduction Tactic In Front-Line Service Encounters, Christopher J. Waterbury, Nicholas A. Smith Phd., Larry Martinez Phd., Shi (Tracy) Xu Phd.

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Minority stress theory links short- and long-term negative health outcomes to stigma and discrimination. It is important that workers have the agency to effect change in the processes of discrimination as a social determinate of health. Identity management strategies are elective tactics that workers may wish to use to reduce discrimination. Front line service workers may be discriminated against by customers in the form of negative customer service evaluations. Group-level stereotypes may influence customer service perceptions more than objective service quality. In this poster, we report findings from two studies in which we examined the effectiveness of an individual-level stigma …

Widespread antibiotic resistance has quickly become one of the most concerning crises affecting modern medicine, especially in cases of Staphylococcal infections, which have become resistant to all -lactam antibiotics. As a result, research into alternative forms of treatment for bacterial infections is a top priority. Bacteriophage therapy is a popular candidate for replacing antibiotics, due to the way the viruses interact with the bacteria. The 80 prophage integrates its DNA into Staphylococcus aureus strain 10616 via the lysogenic cycle, and replicates with the bacterial cell. When stressed, the bacteria stop replicating and the prophage stimulates the lytic cycle, activating transcription …
