Managing, Mitigating And Minimizing Patient Violence In The Emergency Department, Denise Thompson
Managing, Mitigating And Minimizing Patient Violence In The Emergency Department, Denise Thompson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Patient violence in the Emergency Department (ED) is common, varied, and has lasting effects on nurses. Survey and questionnaire responses from 18 nurses in a Midwestern hospital ED revealed mindsets and perceptions of short and long term effects of potential and realized patient violence situations. Patient verbal and physical abuse directed at nurses is generally viewed as an acceptable job risk by the general public, hospital administrators, and nurses. Nurse surveys indicated daily anticipation of physical harm, a sense of helplessness from lack of administrative support, and emotional stress related to acts of patient violence. Support from Occupational Safety and …
Dedicated Preceptors Improve Nurse Residency, Anne Hustad
Dedicated Preceptors Improve Nurse Residency, Anne Hustad
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Research and evidence support the use of dedicated preceptors during new nurse residency programs to increase nurse retention after the orientation period. A small rural Illinois hospital introduced a nurse internship program in 2017 without the use of dedicated preceptors. The program continued throughout 2018 and nurse retention did not improve as anticipated by the hospital leadership. In early 2019, this author collaborated with the education department to implement a new nurse orientation program that introduced the use of dedicated preceptors. An education bundle was developed and presented to the dedicated preceptors outlining expectations and an orientation checklist. Pre-implementation focus …

Reducing Emergence Delirium In Combat Veterans Through The Development Of A Decision-Tree Utilizing Ketamine And Precedex, Joseph Oldani, Russell Arendt
Reducing Emergence Delirium In Combat Veterans Through The Development Of A Decision-Tree Utilizing Ketamine And Precedex, Joseph Oldani, Russell Arendt
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Emergence Delirium incidences in the combat veteran population warrant unique anesthetic considerations. Examples of these considerations include the exclusion of a benzodiazepine and the use of low dose Ketamine or Precedex infusions. Researching these considerations, an anesthetic decision tree coupled with a screening questionnaire was developed and implemented in a hospital in Southern Illinois. The tool was developed based on a thorough literature review and a need to condense this information into a working knowledge for clinical application. Implementation of the project included staff education on the tool and the management of Emergence Delirium by using Ketamine and Precedex. A …

The Efficacy Of A Verification Stage For Determining Vo2max And The Impact Of Sampling Time, Emily J. Kontos
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Purpose: Verification phases may improve the validity of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) measurements during maximal graded exercise testing (GXT). It is not known whether VO2 sampling times influence the necessity of a verification stage. Methods: 15 female and 18 male test subjects (18 – 25 y) completed a treadmill incremental GXT. Speed was increased from 3.0 mph by 0.5 mph every minute until 6.0 mph was reached. Elevation was then increased by 3% every minute until volitional fatigue. Subjects then walked for five minutes at 3.0 mph and 0% grade; after which time the verification stage began …
Effect Of Ambient Temperature On Recovery Of Surgically Instrumented Sprague-Dawley Rats, Gianna Mangone
Effect Of Ambient Temperature On Recovery Of Surgically Instrumented Sprague-Dawley Rats, Gianna Mangone
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Based on current guidelines for housing rodents after surgical instrumentation, rodents may be housed at temperatures that hinder surgical recovery and cause thermal stress– room temperature (21°C) being one of them. Rodents are often housed at room temperature since this temperature is easy for humans to be caring for them. However, if recovering rodents are thermally stressed, experimental results will be confounded. To address this issue, Sprague-Dawley rats were surgically instrumented with radiotelemtry thermoprobes (Data Sciences, #TA-10F40) to monitor their core temperatures, then housed at one of five temperatures to assess the effect ambient temperature had on multiple aspects of …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Analogs As Potential Antitubercular Agents, Peggy Mccluggage
Honors Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious, airborne disease which primarily infects the lungs. One-third of the world’s population is currently estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent for TB [1]. Current treatment for this disease requires at least six months of taking multiple antibiotics with undesirable side effects [2]. Difficulty in complying to this regimen as well as the prevalence of HIV/AIDS has led to antimicrobial resistance seen in Mtb. In order to combat the Multi-Drug Resistant and Extensively-Drug Resistant strains of the disease-causing bacteria, preventative care and novel antibiotics are urgently needed [3]. The purpose for …

Multi-Generational Effects Of ∆9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Exposure On Gene Expression In Liver Tissue, Kayla Lovitt
Honors Theses
Cannabis is the most commonly used, cultivated, and trafficked illicit drug worldwide. Increased availability and acceptance of cannabis and cannabinoid-containing products provide the necessity for understanding how these substances influence aging. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to concentrations of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (0.08, 0.4, 2 µM) during embryonic-larval development, the effects on aging were measured 30 months later and in the offspring of the exposed fish (F1 generation. We observed results indicating a biphasic and hormetic effect. Treatment with the lowest concentration of THC significantly increased egg production, while higher concentrations resulted in impaired …

Social Exclusion Of Older Mossi Women Accused Of Witchcraft In Burkina Faso, West Africa, Clarisse Barbier
Social Exclusion Of Older Mossi Women Accused Of Witchcraft In Burkina Faso, West Africa, Clarisse Barbier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Among the most marginalized populations in the world, one group of women has been persistently ignored, silenced, and forgotten. In Burkina Faso, West Africa, older women in rural villages are often the target of witchcraft accusations; the consequences of these accusations are alarming because these women undergo violent attacks, face exclusion from their villages, and become the most vulnerable and marginalized segment of the Burkinabe population. Between August 2017 and November 2018, I conducted an ethnographic study of Burkinabe women accused of witchcraft living in two shelters in the capital city of Ouagadougou and examined women’s experiences of accusation, trauma, …

Endorepellin Evokes An Angiostatic Stress Signaling Cascade In Endothelial Cells., Aastha Kapoor, Carolyn G Chen, Renato V Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Endorepellin, the C-terminal fragment of the heparan sulfate proteoglycan perlecan, influences various signaling pathways in endothelial cells by binding to VEGFR2. In this study, we discovered that soluble endorepellin activates the canonical stress signaling pathway consisting of PERK, eIF2α, ATF4, and GADD45α. Specifically, endorepellin evoked transient activation of VEGFR2, which, in turn, phosphorylated PERK at Thr980 Subsequently, PERK phosphorylated eIF2α at Ser51, upregulating its downstream effector proteins ATF4 and GADD45α. RNAi-mediated knockdown of PERK or eIF2α abrogated the endorepellin-mediated up-regulation of GADD45α, the ultimate effector protein of this stress signaling cascade. To functionally validate these findings, we utilized an ex …
Occupational Therapy’S Role With Ventricular Assist Devices And The Promotion Of Travel Protocols, Natasha Chandra, Linda Suplicki
Occupational Therapy’S Role With Ventricular Assist Devices And The Promotion Of Travel Protocols, Natasha Chandra, Linda Suplicki
The VAD Journal
An option for individuals diagnosed with end-stage heart failure is to receive a ventricular assist device (VAD). In 2006, Shepherd and Wilding produced an article regarding occupational therapy’s role during the VAD process as they anticipated a growing need for this area of practice. Since that time, there continues to be a lack of supporting literature on occupational therapy’s important role with this population. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explain an occupational therapist’s contribution on the VAD team, offer opportunities and interventions for enhancing quality of life for this unique population, and discuss an innovative travel protocol …

Faculty Research 2020
Liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry platforms are increasingly employed to comprehensively measure metabolome changes in systems biology and complex diseases. Over the past decade, several powerful computational pipelines have been developed for spectral processing, annotation, and analysis. However, significant obstacles remain with regard to parameter settings, computational efficiencies, batch effects, and functional interpretations. Here, we introduce MetaboAnalystR 3.0, a significantly improved pipeline with three key new features: (1) efficient parameter optimization for peak picking; (2) automated batch effect correction; and 3) more accurate pathway activity prediction. Our benchmark studies showed that this workflow was 20~100X faster compared to …
