Electronic Cigarettes And Vaping: Know The Facts, Lauren Lukasko

Honors Projects

There is a new wave of products introducing addiction to the young adult generation. Electronic cigarettes, both nicotine and THC containing, are a rising trend in the younger generations, including middle school, high school, and college aged students. With such a large amount of youth using these products, it is alarming how little is known about the consequences of these devices and how little the population cares about learning what is being inhaled into their bodies. That is why this project focused on creating a method which relays important information about electronic cigarettes in a compact and coherent way through …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Genes that establish the circadian clock have differential expression with respect to solar time in central and peripheral tissues. Here, we find circadian-time-induced differential expression in a large number of genes not associated with circadian rhythms in two brain regions lacking overt circadian function: the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). These regions primarily engage in autonomic, homeostatic, and emotional regulation. However, we find striking diurnal shifts in gene expression in these regions of male Sprague Dawley rats with no obvious patterns that could be attributed to function or region. These findings have implications …

Nearly everyone has the ability for creative thought. Yet, certain individuals create works that propel their fields, challenge paradigms, and advance the world. What are the neurobiological factors that might underlie such prominent creative achievement? In this study, we focus on morphometric differences in brain structure between high creative achievers from diverse fields of expertise and a 'smart' comparison group of age-, intelligence-, and education-matched average creative achievers. Participants underwent a high-resolution structural brain imaging scan and completed a series of intelligence, creative thinking, personality, and creative achievement measures. We examined whether high and average creative achievers could be distinguished …

Photosynthesis is a chemical process through which light energy is used to convert inorganic material (water and carbon dioxide) into organic molecules. Anaerobic photosynthesis, also known as anoxygenic photosynthesis, is the process by which certain bacteria use light energy to create organic compounds but do not adequately involve oxygen. In this experiment we are trying to influence photosynthesis (light and dark reactions: PS-I and PS-II by electron rich gadolinium/iodine complexes like Eovist and Isovue. We also performed X-ray and NIR reflection spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure Gd difusivity and PS-I/II infrared response. The results for X-ray (45kvp and 5 Mas ) …

Sleep-Wake Disturbances In Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Meta Analysis Of Literature And Modeling Of Cerebral Tissue Vulnerability, Xiangfu Zhang, Subhendra Sarkar, Mary A. Browne

Publications and Research

Sleep disturbance is a frequent complaint for patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), it can prolong recovery, and the oxidative stress from lack of sleep could worsen other secondary damages of mTBI. The common types of sleep disturbance of mTBI include insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and obstructive sleep apnea. Conventional imaging often fails to detect any abnormalities in mTBI, and the etiology of sleep disturbance is still unclear. Based on the analysis of current published neurobiological and imaging literature, multiple factors could play a role leading to sleep disturbance in mTBI, however, we have focused on the diencephalon, melatonin and …

Low-Threshold Motor Units Can Be A Pain During Experimental Muscle Pain, Ricardo N.O. Mesquita, Jakob Škarabot, Gregory E.P. Pearcey

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Neural control of muscle force while experiencing muscle pain is not fully understood yet. The idea of a differential modulation of the activity across the entire motor unit (MU) pool is highly attractive. However, while lower discharge rates of MUs during low‐force contractions in the presence of pain have been previously observed, much uncertainty remains regarding alterations of the firing behaviour of higher‐threshold MUs.

Rural-Urban Residence And Mortality Among Three Cohorts Of U.S. Adults, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Katherine A. Ahrens Mph, Phd

Population Health

Though U.S. life expectancy has increased over the past 50 years, this benefit has not been geographically uniform and certain rural persons and communities face a mortality gap. Rural residents experience a shorter life expectancy than urban residents, with higher mortality rates from specific causes such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, coronary heart disease, and lung cancer. Overall, there are higher mortality rates among rural residents for all five leading causes of death – heart disease, stroke, cancer, unintentional injury, and chronic lower respiratory disease – as compared to urban residents.

We sought to close gaps in our understanding of …
