Proteolysis-Targeting Chimera (Protac) For Targeted Protein Degradation And Cancer Therapy, Xin Li, Yongcheng Song May 2020

Proteolysis-Targeting Chimera (Protac) For Targeted Protein Degradation And Cancer Therapy, Xin Li, Yongcheng Song

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC) has been developed to be a useful technology for targeted protein degradation. A bifunctional PROTAC molecule consists of a ligand (mostly small-molecule inhibitor) of the protein of interest (POI) and a covalently linked ligand of an E3 ubiquitin ligase (E3). Upon binding to the POI, the PROTAC can recruit E3 for POI ubiquitination, which is subjected to proteasome-mediated degradation. PROTAC complements nucleic acid-based gene knockdown/out technologies for targeted protein reduction and could mimic pharmacological protein inhibition. To date, PROTACs targeting ~ 50 proteins, many of which are clinically validated drug targets, have been successfully developed with several …

Hypogeusia As The Initial Presenting Symptom Of Covid-19, Lauren E Melley, Eli Bress, Erik Polan

PCOM Scholarly Works

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which first arose in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and has since been declared a pandemic. The clinical sequelae vary from mild, self-limiting upper respiratory infection symptoms to severe respiratory distress, acute cardiopulmonary arrest and death. Otolaryngologists around the globe have reported a significant number of mild or otherwise asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 presenting with olfactory dysfunction. We present a case of COVID-19 resulting in intensive care unit (ICU) admission, presenting with the initial symptom of disrupted taste and flavour perception prior to respiratory …

Adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) is a biologically benign but clinically aggressive lesion that has a significant impact on quality of life. The incidence of the disease has a bimodal distribution, with peaks occurring in children and older adults. Our group previously published the results of a transcriptome analysis of pediatric ACPs that identified several genes that were consistently overexpressed relative to other pediatric brain tumors and normal tissue. We now present the results of a transcriptome analysis comparing pediatric to adult ACP to identify biological differences between these groups that may provide novel therapeutic insights or support the assertion that potential …

The History Of The Dental Profession - From Ancient Origins To Modern Day, Steven A. Kezian May 2020

The History Of The Dental Profession - From Ancient Origins To Modern Day, Steven A. Kezian

Pacific Journal of Health

Abstract:

This research paper explores some of the earliest known evidences of dental treatment and traveled through time discussing important figures who made vital contributions toward the development of this profession.

Dentistry is one of the oldest professions to be developed. Ever since there have been humans, there have been problems with our teeth, and we have been figuring out ways to alleviate them. The idea that there were people specializing in the healing of the teeth and oral diseases has roots to ancient pre-history and a long and fascinating saga.

This history is divided into five stages:

-Ancient pre-history …

Commentary: Phytocannabinoids As Therapeutic Agents To Combat Chronic Gingival Disease., Nick Narek Ohanian

Pacific Journal of Health

The therapeutic potential of cannabis has been harnessed for thousands of years yet the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has still not approved cannabis as a safe or effective drug. The FDA has, however, approved the manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs, which contain a “synthetic version of a substance that is present in the marijuana” and other compounds that mimic its action. A search of the US National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health for keywords “CBD” and “Periodontitis” together yields only 2 publications. Although the current State and Federal regulations on the use of cannabis for …

Effects Of Different Aerobic Training Techniques On Vital Capacity And Breath Hold, Luke Fickenworth, Jarrod Fair, Triet Le, Ashlynn Hickey

Aurora

Athletes are constantly looking for ways to increase their lung capacity. The larger the lung capacity, the more air, specifically oxygen, can be taken in by the athlete. Thus, increasing lung capacity increases endurance, allowing athletes to perform at a higher level for longer periods of time without feeling tired. If lung capacity remains the same while duration or intensity of activity increases, oxygen intake remains the same and there is more stress on the heart to get more oxygen to muscles and remove waste (Rathi 2014). This study will test breath hold time and vital capacity in order to …
