Myocardial Echinococcosis: Rare Manifestation Of A Common Parasitic Disease In Northern Tanzania, Ahmed Jusabani, Clement F. Kalambo, Mubashir Jusabani, Salim Surani

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

Hydatid (Echinococcal) disease often involves the liver and lungs but in sporadic cases, it can involve cardiac structures. A 24-year-old male was referred with symptoms of cough and shortness of breath and a provisional diagnosis of metastatic disease of unknown primary to the lung, which was based on a chest X-ray (CXR). Incidentally, on echocardiogram, he was found to have right ventricular (RV) and myocardial multiseptated cysts, which were compatible with cardiac echinococcosis, as the patient had multiple bilateral lung cysts as well. Imaging with ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has ameliorated the diagnosis of …

A Predictive Analytics Model For Differentiating Between Transient Ischemic Attacks (Tia) And Its Mimics, Alia C. Stanciu, Mihai Banciu, Alireza Sadighi, Kyle A. Marshall, Neil Holland, Vida Abedi, Ramin Zand

Faculty Journal Articles

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a brief episode of neurological dysfunction resulting from cerebral ischemia not associated with permanent cerebral infarction. TIA is associated with high diagnostic errors because of the subjective nature of findings and the lack of clinical and imaging biomarkers. The goal of this study was to design and evaluate a novel multinomial classification model, based on a combination of feature selection mechanisms coupled with logistic regression, to predict the likelihood of TIA, TIA mimics, and minor stroke.

Effectiveness Of Home-Based Rehabilitation Program In Minimizing Disability And Secondary Falls After A Hip Fracture: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial, Anum Sadruddin Pidani, Saniya Sabzwari, Khabir Ahmad, Ata Khan, Shahryar Noordin

Department of Surgery Docs

Introduction: Hip fractures are a major health problem globally and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and substantial economic costs. Successful operative treatment of hip fracture patients is necessary for the optimization of post-op mobility and functional recovery of the patient. Rehabilitation after surgical stabilization of a hip fracture is crucial in order to restore pre-fracture function and to avoid long-term institutionalization. In particular ongoing exercise which targets balance can prevent up to 40% of falls. Therefore, we have designed a post-discharge home-based physical rehabilitation intervention program to minimize disability and falls in this high-risk elderly population.

Impacts Of Motor And Sensory Impairment On Language In Young Children With Autism, Elizabeth A. Bisi Jun 2020

Impacts Of Motor And Sensory Impairment On Language In Young Children With Autism, Elizabeth A. Bisi

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) present with varying degrees of deficit in the broader areas of social communication and stereotyped behaviors, but emerging research proposes delayed motor skill and atypical sensory processing as additional factors worth closer examination. In the current study, I sought to investigate the impacts of visual motor skills and sensory differences on language ability in young children with autism. I hypothesized that young children with autism, atypical sensory processing (Short Sensory Profile, 2nd Edition), and impaired visual motor integration (Beery VMI, 6th Edition) would have the most impacted language ability scores (Differential Ability …

The bacteriophage population is vast, dynamic, old, and genetically diverse. The genomics of phages that infect bacterial hosts in the phylum Actinobacteria show them to not only be diverse but also pervasively mosaic, and replete with genes of unknown function. To further explore this broad group of bacteriophages, we describe here the isolation and genomic characterization of 116 phages that infect Microbacterium spp. Most of the phages are lytic, and can be grouped into twelve clusters according to their overall relatedness; seven of the phages are singletons with no close relatives. Genome sizes vary from 17.3 kbp to 97.7 kbp, …

Do New Trainees Pose A Threat To Postoperative Complications After Hip Fracture Surgeries? Retrospective Cohort Of 1045 Patients Over A Decade At A University Hospital, Obada Hasan, Mashal Amin, Umar Rabbani, Amna Rabbani, Fatima Mahmood, Shahryar Noordin

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Introduction: Induction of new residents and surgical trainees in most institutes occurs once a year. Fresh residents with no experience, may pose a threat to the surgical procedure outcome and there can be a potential increase in patients' morbidity and mortality as a result of this turnover. Literature is inconclusive about this effect. Our aim was to study the "new residents' induction effect" on postoperative complications after hip fracture surgeries.
Methodology: This is non funded non commercialized study from a university hospital. Investigators studied a retrospective cohort of 1045 adult hip fracture patients who were operated at our tertiary care …

Effectiveness Of High-Fidelity Simulation In Training Emergency Medicine Physicians In Point Of Care Ultrasonography In Pakistan: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Kiran Azizi, Madiha Ismail, Umaira Aftab, Badar Afzal Khan, Asad Mian

Department of Emergency Medicine

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) is frequently utilized in emergency medicine (EM), with an extended-focused assessment with sonography in trauma (e-FAST) being the most widely used PoCUS modality. This modality is not only time- and cost-efficient, but it is highly accurate in the diagnosis and management of surgical patients in the emergency department, as well as being highly predictive of patient outcomes. Targeted training is essential to ensure a learner's confidence in image acquisition, interpretation, and translation of knowledge to making clinical decisions. High-fidelity simulation offers a uniquely safe and "mistake-forgiving" environment to teach and train medical professionals. The present study …

Leiomyosarcoma Of Prostate: A Case Report And Literature Review, Abdeljalil Heddat, Younes Houry, Redouane Rabii

Health Sciences

Prostate leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare and very aggressive neoplasm that represents less than 0.1% of primary malignant tumors of the prostate. We present a patient with primary leiomyosarcoma of the prostate and examine the cases reported in the literature to discuss the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of this rare tumor. Median survival was estimated at 17 months (95% CI 20.7–43.7 months) and the actuarial survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 68%, 34%, and 26%, respectively. The only predictors of long-term survival were negative surgical margins and the absence of metastatic disease at presentation. A multidisciplinary …

Medication Safety During Transitions Of Care:The Importance Of Checklists In Preventing Patient Harm, Laressa Bethishou, Olivia Lounsbury, Donna Prosser

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

There is a need to optimize patient safety as patients navigate through the healthcare system. With each transition of care, patients are vulnerable to changes that may cause adverse effects, including changes in their healthcare team, health status, and medications. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) defines a transition of care as “the movement of a patient from one setting of care to another.” While the concept itself may seem simple, this definition fails to capture the many potential handoff complications which classify these transitions as high risk for patients. With 67% of patients facing unintended medication discrepancies …
