Sexuality Beyond Young Adulthood: Affordances And Barriers To Sexual Expression In The Nursing Home, Angela Schubert, Mark Pope
Sexuality Beyond Young Adulthood: Affordances And Barriers To Sexual Expression In The Nursing Home, Angela Schubert, Mark Pope
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Human sexuality is part of life, regardless of age or where someone resides. Previous research on older adult sexual expression in nursing homes has primarily focused on staff perceptions – almost all of which was conducted using quantitative methods. This phenomenological study aimed to explore sexual expression as it was perceived, experienced, and practiced by ten older adults, ages 65 and older, residing in a nursing facility. This paper will explore themes associated with the self-perception of affordances and barriers to engage in sexual expression, and how we as mental health counselors may best serve the needs of older adults …

The Impact Of Relationship Wellness Checkups With Gay Male Couples, Mary Minten, Cass Dykeman
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Relationship health impacts many other health outcomes, including physical and mental wellbeing and the health of children in the family system (Goeke-Morey, Cummings, & Papp, 2007; Jaremka, Glaser, Malarkey, & Kiecolt-Glaser, 2013; Jaremka, Lindgren, & Kiecolt-Glaser, 2013; Pihet, Bodenmann, Cina, Widmer, & Shantinath, 2007; Rappaport, 2013; Robles, Slatcher, Trombello, & McGinn, 2014). Despite the importance of relationship health, couples do not regularly seek support for maintaining their connection (Eubanks-Fleming & Cordova, 2012). Early intervention programs that provide support are a growing public health initiative (Cowan & Cowan, 2014). One brief early intervention program, the Marriage Checkup (MC), positively impacts …

Lactate Dehydrogenase Rising: Bleeding Or Clotting?, Ashleigh Long, Amin Yehya, David Baran
The VAD Journal
Modern continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (VADs) have greatly improved the survival of patients with end stage heart failure. However, they are associated with adverse effects, including cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), bleeding, infection, and device thrombosis. Definitive measures to evaluate for pump thrombosis can be challenging; hence, multiple laboratory and imaging modalities have been studied to help guide decision making. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has proven to be a reliable test when used in the appropriate clinical settings to help diagnose pump thrombosis. When a patient presents with both signs of life-threatening cerebral hemorrhage and VAD thrombosis, the clinical picture can be quite …

Combined Open Calcaneocuboid, Naviculocuneiform And Subtalar Dislocation: A Case Report And Literature Review, Khai Phang Wong, Zhi Hao Tang, Gek Meng Tan
BioMedicine
Open dislocations of the midfoot and subtalar joints are extremely rare injuries. Understanding the anatomy of these joints and the various injury patterns is imperative to obtain stable concentric reduction and provide good functional outcome. We present a report of a 26- year old male who was involved in a road traffic accident and sustained open dislocations of the calcaneocuboid, naviculocuneiform and subtalar joints. He initially underwent external fixation in view of the severe soft tissue injury. After improvement of the soft tissue condition, he underwent K-wiring of the calcaneocuboid joint, buttress plating of the talonaviculocuneiform joint, peroneal tendon reconstruction …

Frequency Of Monocyte Subsets Is Linked To The Severity Of Atherosclerosis In Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease: A Case-Control Study, Irina V. Kologrivova, Tatiana Suslova, Olga Koshelskaya, Oksana Trubacheva, Olga Haritonova, Irina Vinnitskaya
BioMedicine
Background: Monocytes are recognized as central cells in the progression of atherosclerosis, and are subcategorized into classical (CD14++CD16lo), intermediate (CD14++CD16hi) and non-classical (CD14+CD16hi) subsets.
Purpose: The present study aimed to assess the relationships between different subsets of monocytes, metabolic and inflammatory factors in patients with stable coronary heart disease.
Methods: A total of 26 patients (both men and women) with stable ischemic heart disease (IHD). Among all the recruited patients, 17 patients had significant coronary artery disease defined as diameter stenosis more than 70%. Severity of CHD was assessed by the Gensini score (GS). …

BioMedicine
Background: Even though pedicle screw application is a common procedure, and in-spite of spine surgeons being proficient with the technique, mal-positioning of pedicle screws can still occur. We intend to determine by postoperative CT analysis, the incidence of pedicle screw breach in the thoracolumbar spine despite satisfactory intraoperative placement confirmed by fluoroscopy.
Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients diagnosed with thoracolumbar fractures who underwent open or minimally invasive posterior stabilization under fluoroscopic guidance were retrospectively reviewed. Postoperative CT scans of patients were analysed to determine the incidence of pedicle breach despite satisfactory intraoperative placement, and also to determine the factors that …

Silver Sulfadiazine’S Effect On Keratin-19 Expression As Stem Cell Marker In Burn Wound Healing, Dewi Sukmawati, Astheria Eryani, Lia Damayanti
BioMedicine
Background: Burn wounds are one of the causes of cutaneous injury that involve both epidermal and dermal layers of skin. Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) has been widely used to treat burn wounds, however recent studies have found the treatment to have some drawbacks, such as cellular toxicity effects. Cutaneous wound regeneration is known to start from the basal layer of the epidermal epithelial cells, which are enriched with highly proliferative cells. Keratin-19 (K19) is one of the epidermal stem cell biomarkers found in the skin. This study aims to explore the expression of K19 in burn wound tissue and to …
