Background: Although physical activity (PA) has been shown in helping prevent and treat obesity, current PA interventions are still not effective in ameliorating the obesity epidemic. Additional forms of PA need to be investigated to improve PA engagement and outcomes. We hypothesize that pairing a narrative (i.e., story) with an active video game (AVG), a less traditional form of PA, will increase participant engagement in PA. This paper presents the rationale, implementation, and pilot results of a study assessing the effect of narrative's impact on PA and a series of other health outcomes.

Objective: This paper presents the rationale, implementation, …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Osteoarthritis (OA) is found secondary to medial patellar luxation (MPL) which is one of the most common diseases in small-breed dogs. Management of the disease is surgical correction or medical treatment. In patients who are unable to do the surgical correction, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) remain the drugs of choice for OA therapy. Nowadays nutraceuticals have become more popular since there are no side effects when given for along period. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical chondroprotective effects of undenatured collagen type-II (UCII) on osteoarthritis secondary to canine medial patellar luxation. Nine small-breed dogs (thirteen stifle …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) is known to participate in innate and adaptive immune responses against viral infections. Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) causes a global, economically important and highly contagious disease in pigs. To explore theinteraction between ISG15 and CSFV, the ISG15gene was amplified, cloned and expressed in E. coliBL21 cells. The expressed ISG15 protein was purified by Ni-NTA agarose column and used to prepare a polyclonal mouse antibody. The anti-ISG15 antibody produced in mice could react with ISG15 expressed in the prokaryotic BL-21 cells as well as natural swine ISG15 expressed in PK-15 cells. This polyclonal antibody against swine …

Cardiac Myxoma In The Pulmonary Trunk Of A Canine: Presence Of Mesenchymal Stem-Like Cells, Luis Alfaro, Alexis Enciso, Javier Enciso

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Cardiac myxoma is a rare disease in dogs. Its histogenic origin has not yet been established, but the involvement of mesenchymal stem cells has been suggested in humans. Here we report an encapsulated and benign cardiac myxoma located at the entrance to the pulmonary trunk of the heart of an 8-year-old male Yorkshire Terrier dog presenting sudden death in the absence of clinical symptoms related to cardiac alterations. Hematoxylin/eosin staining demonstrated the mixoid origin of the myxoma, showing abundant hypocellular stroma with polygonal cells, while immunohistochemistry (IHC) corroborated its mesenchymal lineage with the detection of vimentin and α-SMA positive cell …

Correction Of Diaphragmatic Hernia Using The Transverse Colon In A Dog, Dongwook Kim, Gonhyung Kim Sep 2020

Correction Of Diaphragmatic Hernia Using The Transverse Colon In A Dog, Dongwook Kim, Gonhyung Kim

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A 3-year-old female Golden Retriever was referred with weakness, tachypnea and dyspnea. An incomplete diaphragmatic silhouette, gas-filled small intestine and pleural effusion in the thoracic cavitywere revealed in radiographs, implying a diaphragmatic hernia. After laparotomy, the abdominalstructureswere gently retrieved into the abdomen and a defect of 2×7 cm2was found. The transverse colonwas used as an autologous tissue flap for the repair of the defect. There were no complications identified for 2 years after surgery. Thus, patching with the transverse colon can be considered as an alternative for treating a defect in patients with a diaphragmatic hernia.

This study explored whether nursing and midwifery students undergoing a work-study programme at AKU-SONAM felt their education was underpinned by an adult education philosophy. A semi-structured questionnaire designed specifically for this study based on the Knowles’ (1980) ‘Principles of Adult Education’ was administered to 96 students who completed their programmes in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Our paper reports on both the positive aspects of students’ experiences in this work-study programme, including the improvement of critical thinking …

Self-Management Education For Prevention, Early Detection, And Treatment Of Hypoglycemia: An Integrative Review, Chinedum Rosemary Ikwueme Sep 2020

Self-Management Education For Prevention, Early Detection, And Treatment Of Hypoglycemia: An Integrative Review, Chinedum Rosemary Ikwueme

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Hypoglycemia is a major complication from poor diabetic care management. Available literature indicates that it is the underlying cause of mortality in over 258,000 deaths reported in 2017. That notwithstanding, it remains a phenomenon that is given less attention than it deserves, particularly in adults with type 2 diabetes. Aside from the huge annual financial costs to the health care system (about $327 billion) in 2017, patients with hypoglycemia complications risk many cardiovascular and neurological complications, including skipped time from work in middle aged adults, dementia, falls, hospitalization and death. The purpose of this integrative review is to educate nurses …

Investigation Of Undocumented Heart Disease In Cadaveric Donors, Crystal Danae Passburg Sep 2020

Investigation Of Undocumented Heart Disease In Cadaveric Donors, Crystal Danae Passburg

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

For nearly a century, heart disease has been the leading source of death and disease in the United States, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of individuals every year and burdening millions more with diminished health and severe disability. However, despite the significant known prevalence of heart disease, studies suggest that many more individuals—and particularly those within the female and elderly populations—may possess undiagnosed heart disease which remains undetected even after death due to the lack of autopsy examination. In the absence of autopsy, many cases of heart disease may never be identified, resulting in a skewed understanding of …

Use Of Delirium Protocols In Decreasing Falls Among Adults In Acute Care: An Integrative Review, Shelly Steverson Thornton Sep 2020

Use Of Delirium Protocols In Decreasing Falls Among Adults In Acute Care: An Integrative Review, Shelly Steverson Thornton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Delirium in elderly hospitalized adults continues to be a common and costly issue in health care today. Various delirium protocols and strategies are available to reduce negative outcomes of delirium such as falls, increased length of stay, pressure ulcers, hospital readmissions, the need for transferal to long-term care, and mortality rates. However, many hospitals have still not implemented routine delirium protocols. Because falls in older hospitalized adults are often linked to delirium, this integrative review was undertaken to examine delirium protocols and approaches that specifically decrease falls among older adults in acute care settings. Several multicomponent, multidisciplinary delirium protocols were …

Redesigning Nursing Education To Build Healthier Communities: An Innovative Cross-Sector Collaboration., Beth Ann Swan, Peggy Hilden, Nikki West, Garrett Chan, Kathryn Shaffer, Judith G Berg, Mary Dickow, Deloras Jones

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Today's health care environment requires registered nurses to be prepared for an array of practice settings, providing care outside the hospital and directly in the community. There is increasing focus on wellness, prevention, access to care, and mental health services for an aging and more diverse population. To improve alignment of education with increasingly complex needs, donor-advised funding supported four prelicensure nursing schools to transform their curricula. Selected schools were guided through a curriculum redesign process emphasizing community and continuum of care. This innovation was consistent with meeting challenges to realize the Institute of Medicine's 2011 Future of Nursing recommendations.

Background, Motivation and Objective: Thyroid nodules with indeterminate or suspicious cytology are commonly encountered in clinical practice and their clinical management is controversial. Recently, genetical analysis of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNAs) was implemented at some institutions to differentiate thyroid nodules as high and low risk based on the presence of certain oncogenes commonly associated with aggressive tumor behavior and poor patient outcomes. Our group recently detailed the performance of a machine-learning model based on ultrasonography images of thyroid nodules for the prediction of high and low risk mutations. This study evaluated the performance of a second-generation machine-learning algorithm incorporating …

Stock Buybacks: Some Old Norm Should Remain New, Wei Zhang Sep 2020

Stock Buybacks: Some Old Norm Should Remain New, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Corporate payouts, especially through stock buybacks, are never short of critics. COVID-19 has simply energized them further. From the energy industry to airlines and banks, US public companies are blamed for ensnaring themselves into the abysmal crisis in the midst of COVID-19 by handing out cashes extravagantly to buy back stocks years before. However, as astutely pointed out by Professors Jesse Fried and Charles Wang, the critics did not get the facts right even before COVID-19. After taking into consideration the amount of newly raised capital through equity or debt issuances, the cumulative net payouts by US public companies between …

Private Liability For Public Health, Jerrold Soh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As at this writing, COVID-19 continues to spread around the world. Most disease transmissions, one hopes, are unintentional. But could one nonetheless be liable for unintentionally, yet carelessly, transmitting the disease? If so, when would liability arise, and how wide may its scope be? If X transmits the disease to Y who in turn transmits it to Z, can Z claim against X? If not, why should liability escape one who carelessly spreads a deadly and highly contagious virus when courts have historically found liability for more innocuous harms?154 This short essay discusses how private liability might complement public regulation …

Constitutional Literacy In Times Of Crisis, Maartje De Visser

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

At the same time she announced her withdrawal from public life in 2018, former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor made a passionate plea for “all citizens to understand our Constitution and unique system of government, and participate actively in their communities.”441 The timing coincided with the halfway mark of Donald Trump’s term in presidency, a president who has very publicly declared his knowledge of the US Constitution, but whose understanding of it has regularly been called into question.442 At its foundation, the democratic legitimacy of a government arguably presupposes a working familiarity with the constitution qua social contract. …

General Surgery, East Africa

Currently, an ideal gadget to stop retrograde stone migration remains a holy grail, and the hunt for such a device is still ongoing in the 21st century. The quest for an ideal instrument is driven by the need to reduce cost, minimize ancillary procedure rates, reduce the device's operative time, and improve the stone-free rate. The purpose of the present review is to provide an update on the use of preventive measures that are used to stop retrograde stone migration during pneumatic lithotripsy for ureteric stone management.

A New Era In Asthma Management: Assessment Of Asthma Control, Kevin R. Murphy, Joel Solis Sep 2020

A New Era In Asthma Management: Assessment Of Asthma Control, Kevin R. Murphy, Joel Solis

School of Medicine Publications

Asthma is recognized as a chronic, heterogenous disease characterized by airway inflammation and a history of respiratory symptoms (eg, wheeze, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or cough) that vary over time and in intensity.1 Variations are often triggered by factors such as exercise, allergen or irritant exposure, change in weather, or viral respiratory tract infections. Asthma symptoms and airflow limitation may resolve spontaneously or in response to treatment. Symptoms may be absent for weeks or months, yet airway hyperresponsiveness related to chronic airway inflammation usually persists.
