© 2020, The Author(s). Systematic control of the transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) pathway is essential to keep the amplitude and the intensity of downstream signalling at appropriate levels. Ubiquitination plays a crucial role in the general regulation of this pathway. Here we identify the deubiquitinating enzyme OTUD4 as a transcriptional target of the TGFβ pathway that functions through a positive feedback loop to enhance overall TGFβ activity. Interestingly we demonstrate that OTUD4 functions through both catalytically dependent and independent mechanisms to regulate TGFβ activity. Specifically, we find that OTUD4 enhances TGFβ signalling by promoting the membrane presence of TGFβ receptor …

Community Health Sciences
Background: Anemia is a major public health concern among women of reproductive age leading to high maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Of the prior studies conducted in Pakistan, most focused on large urban areas and did not explore the determinants of anemia among women of reproductive age (WRA) across socio-demographic, dietary, reproductive, and biological domains. Thus, we aimed to study the prevalence and determinants of anemia among WRA in rural Pakistan.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Thatta district of Pakistan from September 2018 to January 2019 and enrolled 150 non-pregnant, married women. Data collectors administered …

The De Garengeot Hernia: A Case Report Of An Unusual Presentation Of Appendicitis., Davek Sharma, Jacob Katsnelson, Emmanuel Nwachuku, Jeffrey Kolff
Abington Jefferson Health Papers
INTRODUCTION: A De Garengeot hernia is defined by a femoral hernia containing the appendix. Acute appendicitis within a femoral hernia is an extremely rare surgical presentation and occurs in only 0.08-0.013% of cases as cited by the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 64-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital with acute onset of a right-sided groin bulge that occurred earlier that day after doing heavy lifting. Her workup revealed acute appendicitis contained within an incarcerated right femoral hernia. The patient underwent laparoscopic appendectomy with open femoral hernia repair. Intraoperatively, the appendiceal tip was incarcerated within the hernia …

Impact Of Metformin On Feeding, Behavior, And Metabolism In Drosophila Melanogaster., Erica E. Hassoun, Heba Kourhabi, Jason Bui Ho, Dae-Sung Hwangbo
Undergraduate Research Events
Metformin is a first-line drug used in the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus and is the 4th-most prescribed drug in the United States. It functions in lowering blood glucose levels and increasing insulin sensitivity. Despite its wide scale use, the degree to which it affects aspects of behavior and metabolism unrelated to diabetes is not fully understood.
Recent studies have attempted to fill this gap, particularly in the context of metformin’s impact on lifespan. We decided to extend this research by focusing on measurable behaviors as well as traits related to metabolism and physiology. Using the fruit fly Drosophila …

Purpose: To assess the effect of aging and various surface treatments on the microtensile bond strength of resin cement to two hybrid esthetic materials. Materials and Methods: Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Celtra Duo, Dentsply Sirona, United States) and hybrid resin nanoceramic (Cerasmart TM, GC Corporation, Japan) blocks were cut into plates of 3 mm thickness. Each ceramic material was surface treated either with hydrofluoric acid etching and silane or with sandblasting and silane. A dual-cured adhesive resin cement (Panavia TM V5, Kuraray, U.S.A.) was utilized to bond the composite resin plates to the surface treated ceramic plates. The ceramic-composite resin blocks …

Biofilm Forming Ability Of Bacteria Isolated From Dental Caries: With Reference To Streptococcus Species, Sonali Kaustubh Ambulkar, Vidya Tale, Abhijit Jadhav, Komal Kulkarni
Future Dental Journal
Dental caries is formed by the group of microorganisms attached to a tooth surface embedded in a matrix of polymers. Biofilm plays an important role in the development of dental caries, plaque and other periodontal diseases. The present study is aimed to isolate, identify and characterize bacteria from dental caries. The ability of biofilm formation of these isolates was confirmed by Congo red agar method, Tube method and Microtitre plate method. High biofilm-forming bacteria were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus anginosus, Enterococcus faecalis and Rothia dentocariosa are the predominant biofilm forming bacteria associated with dental caries.

PEEK is considered inert and biocompatible, however, it has been shown to possess low surface energy and that leads to decreased osteointegration with bone, Recent researches have focused on increasing the bioactivity of PEEK by modifying the surface by chemical and physical means such as plasma treated surfaces.
The Purpose of this article to evaluate peek dental implant with cold plasma surface treatment
Materials In this case series an immediately loaded peek dental implant, treated with plasma surface activation method, was used to replace anterior …

A successful life like dental ceramic restoration should be able to blend harmoniously with the adjacent natural teeth. This could be achieved by mimicking and duplicating the natural teeth color, translucency, as well as the surface characterization of natural teeth. Shade matching is an important and a difficult task in mimicking natural teeth that usually leads to unreliable and inconsistent results. Still, a small percent of human teeth shade cannot be matched by available commercial shade guides. The presence of a chair side CAD/CAM system in the dental office eliminates the presence of laboratory steps and hence saving time and …
