Pharmacy Manager Strategies For Reducing Financial Losses From Adverse Drug Events By Polypharmacy Patients, Francis Rudden
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every year over 100,000 deaths occur in the U.S. from adverse drug events derived from medication errors. Medication errors account for an annual cost of $100 to $200 billion. Healthcare pharmacists lack strategies to reduce adverse drug events and medication errors from taking place. Grounded in complex adaptive system theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies to reduce advere drug events and medication errors. The participants were 5 pharmacist managers in a county in central Florida. These pharmacists were from different community pharmacies, and each had a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the …
Education Toolkit On Restraint Reduction In The Intensive Care Unit, Sharon Watkins
Education Toolkit On Restraint Reduction In The Intensive Care Unit, Sharon Watkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The use of physical restraints in hospitals has been in practice for the better part of a century despite the many adverse effects it can have on patients. Socially, restraint use can strip the patient of their dignity in addition to their freedom. This evidence-based project was to build a toolkit to educate intensive care unit (ICU) nurses regarding the negative effects physical restraint use can have on their patients and to present alternatives to their use. Tools developed from prior research were included in the toolkit, and the Neuman systems model was applied to the overall education project. The …
Tool Kit To Address Communication On A Mental Health Unit, Carol L. Barclay
Tool Kit To Address Communication On A Mental Health Unit, Carol L. Barclay
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective communication by newly graduated, hired nursing staff is a significant issue affecting patient care on mental health units. The rising prevalence of mental illness in the United States has not only increased the healthcare burden, but has also affected the overall economy. The lack of training of new nursing staff regarding communication diminishes the effective recovery rate of patients, further increasing the burden to the healthcare field and the economy. A tool kit for newly graduated mental health nurses working on mental health units may help to improve communication skills and enhance patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, …
Addressing Bullying And Incivility Among Nurses, Caroline Holland Combs
Addressing Bullying And Incivility Among Nurses, Caroline Holland Combs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For decades, nurses have experienced some form of bullying and incivility throughout their careers. Incivility contributes to behaviors that constrain the sense of empowerment among nurses and directly encroach upon Provision 6 of the American Nurses Association code of ethics, which addresses sustaining a moral environment and the need to create a contagious culture of respect that is free from uncivil behavior. The nature of this staff education project was to bring awareness to the bullying behaviors and incivility that exist within an organization’s culture by assessing for the incidence of bullying and by providing an educational program for the …

COPD is a progressive, multifaceted, chronic disease with steadily increasing worldwide rates of prevalence, morbidity and mortality, making improved COPD care a global health priority. Current practice guidelines are in place, but the literature continues to demonstrate inadequacies in practice, for example the inconsistent use of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). The purpose of the project was to conduct a quality improvement initiative evaluation of the PR program at a hospital in south-central Idaho. The practice-focused question was: What impact has implementation of a PR program had on COPD care in the area? Donabedian’s framework for healthcare quality evaluation was the theoretical …
Evidence-Based Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis Education, Sonya Sandhu
Evidence-Based Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis Education, Sonya Sandhu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pediatric patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are a unique subset of patients who arrive to the emergency department (ED) for care, and differ from adults regarding symptomology, treatment, and adverse effects. Nurses who will encounter this patient population must have adequate knowledge and confidence to care for them, yet research continues to show a gap in practice. The purpose of this doctoral project was to determine if a staff education project would increase ED nurse knowledge and confidence in caring for pediatric emergency patients with DKA. Utilizing Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model, an evidence-based staff education program was formulated, reviewed by an …
Systematic Review Of Loss-Frame Messaging And Change In Health Behavior, Eddie Jean Simmons
Systematic Review Of Loss-Frame Messaging And Change In Health Behavior, Eddie Jean Simmons
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent analysis estimates Type II diabetes affects 23.4 million people in the US. Approximately 30% of these patients are not in optimal control of their diabetes, raising risks for blindness, amputation, and cardiac disease. A gap in diabetes education practice is that traditional positive-framed messaging has not persuaded many patients to modify their self-management behaviors. There is a need for alternative ways to communicate the risks of not managing the disease to patients who may have different health beliefs. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the best available evidence regarding the efficacy of loss-frame messaging when used …

This systemic review aimed to find a pain assessment strategy effective in identifying pain in patients with a diagnosis of dementia. Kolcaba's theory of comfort was used as the theoretical framework for the study. The databases of Medline, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, and Cumulative …
Experiences Of College Freshmen Women Who Eat In A Social Environment, Kylie Cowens Blodgett
Experiences Of College Freshmen Women Who Eat In A Social Environment, Kylie Cowens Blodgett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The social cognitive theory suggests that social surroundings influence health behaviors, and social modeling literature supports that eating behaviors are influenced by social norms. Eating decisions are especially vulnerable to social influence during the transition to college, although current interventions do not address social influence in the context of the eating environment itself or consider how men and women may experience this environment differently. This generic qualitative study explored how freshmen women perceived their experiences eating in a cafeteria setting. The research questions investigated freshmen women’s perceptions about social influence on self-efficacy, self-regulation, outcome expectations, and modeling of normative information …

Methodological Considerations For The Determination Of The Critical Resistance For The Deadlift, Alexander C. Moss
Methodological Considerations For The Determination Of The Critical Resistance For The Deadlift, Alexander C. Moss
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
This study determined if plate movement during conventional deadlifting affects critical resistance (CR) estimates derived from the linear work limit (Wlim) versus repetitions relationship. Eleven subjects completed 1-repetition maximum (1RM) deadlift testing followed by 8 visits, to determine the number of repetitions to failure at 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% 1RM for both reset (RS) and touch-and-go (TG) methods, respectively. The CR was calculated as slope of the line of total work completed (repetitions × load [in kilograms]) versus total repetitions for each of four intensities (50-80% 1RM). The number of repetitions to failure were determined at CR …

Knee Joint Loading Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Link To Patient Reported Outcomes And A Novel Method To Monitor With Wearable Sensors, Alex Spencer
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Recovery from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) commonly results in undesirable physical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). Identification of modifiable factors such as knee contact force (KCF) early in rehabilitation that can improve these outcomes is important due to the rapid decrease in function, quality of life, and joint health in this population. Additionally, if noninvasive measurement of KCFs outside of a traditional laboratory were possible, clinicians could optimize patient treatment with personalized care. Therefore, there are two primary aims to this thesis: 1) quantify the link between KCF and PROs which measure pain, ability to perform activities of daily living, …

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Flywheel resistance training (FRT) has become an increasingly popular modality for exercising due to its unique application of providing external resistance. Little is known about how changes in relative inertial loads affects performance and electromyography (EMG) activity. The purpose of this study was to examine how performance metrics and quadriceps EMG activity are affected by relative inertial load during FRT-based squats. Fifteen resistance trained individuals completed five sets of five repetitions of squats with varying relative inertial loads in random order. Peak Eccentric Power (PEP), Peak Concentric Power (PCP), average force, total work, and repetition time were measured. Surface level …
Atv Dynamics And Pediatric Rider Safety, James T. Auxier Ii
Atv Dynamics And Pediatric Rider Safety, James T. Auxier Ii
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
It has been observed through numerous academic and governmental agency studies that pediatric all-terrain vehicle ridership carries significant risk of injury and death. While no doubt valuable to safety, the post-hoc approach employed in these studies does little to explain the why and how behind the risk factors. Furthermore, there has been no prolonged, widespread, organized, and concerted effort to reconstruct and catalog the details and causes of the large (20,000+) number of ATV-related injuries that occur each year as has been done for road-based motor vehicle accidents. This dissertation takes the opposite approach from a meta-analysis and instead examines …

Leading Well: Anesthesiology Program Directors As Servant Leaders And Their Development Of Resident Wellness Programs, Amy Noel Dilorenzo
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Anesthesiology residents are at significant risk of developing serious issues during training including burnout, depression, and substance abuse. Recent accreditation requirements mandate that these well-being issues be addressed by residency training programs. Program directors, as the leaders of residency programs, are charged with protecting the wellness of residents and leading wellness initiatives. The program director role can be well-described in a servant leadership construct because they are charged with caring for the individual needs of their residents.
This dissertation is a report of a mixed-methods study that explores anesthesiology program directors’ self-perceptions as servant leaders and their efforts to lead …
The Coulter Principle: For The Good Of Humankind, Marshall Graham
The Coulter Principle: For The Good Of Humankind, Marshall Graham
Theses and Dissertations--History
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 made Wallace H. Coulter abruptly comprehend the critical need for rapid and accurate blood-cell counts in providing care for victims of radiation exposure. This thesis documents the unwritten story of his journey from that comprehension through his invention and implementation of the Coulter Principle, its commercialization in the first widely available automated blood-cell counter, and elaboration of that ground-breaking counter into increasingly sophisticated instrumentation for analysis not only of blood cells, but of particles involved in many other scientific disciplines. International cold-war politics and the burgeoning of increasingly powerful nuclear …

Elucidating The Complex Signaling Events Driving Intestinal Stem Cell Plasticity Following Injury, Evan Lynch
Elucidating The Complex Signaling Events Driving Intestinal Stem Cell Plasticity Following Injury, Evan Lynch
Theses and Dissertations--Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics
Signaling events governing intestinal stem cell (ISC) homeostasis maintain the delicate balance of active self-renewal and passive differentiation to replenish intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) every 3-5 days. However, under certain contexts, ISC function is irreversibly compromised—requiring committed IEC lineages to dedifferentiate and regain “stemness”. In the current studies, we examine the signaling events driving epithelial cell responses to injury to expose pathologic failures in the healing response. Our specific goal is to tease out the cellular contexts that promote dedifferentiation to design effective therapeutics for disease conditions compromising ISC function.
First, we generated a novel transgenic animal using the epithelial-specific …

Associations Between Psychosocial Stressors, Genes, And Cardiovascular Disease In At-Risk Adults, Kaitlin Voigts Key
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
Psychosocial stressors have a significant adverse impact on cardiovascular health. While better medical treatments and increased emphasis on healthy lifestyle have improved cardiovascular health for many in the United States over the past 50 years, there are persistent inequities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates, with the highest rates among populations burdened by chronic exposure to psychosocial stressors such as discrimination and anxiety, among others. Genetic factors may interact with these stressors further influencing the rates of CVD in these populations. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine associations among psychosocial stressors and other CVD risk factors, and the influence …
