A Hybrid System Dynamics, Discrete Event Simulation And Data Envelopment Analysis To Investigate Boarding Patients In Acute Hospitals, Leila Keshtkar, Wael Rashwan, Waleed Abo Hamad, Amr Arisha

Articles

Timely access to health services has become increasingly difficult due to demographic change and aging people growth. These create new heterogeneous challenges for society and healthcare systems. Congestion at acute hospitals has reached unprecedented levels due to the unavailability of acute beds. As a consequence, patients in need of treatment endure prolonged waiting times as a decision whether to admit, transfer, or send them home is made. These long waiting times often result in boarding patients in different places in the hospital. This threatens patient safety and diminishes the service quality while increasing treatment costs. It is argued in the …

Comparability Of Raman Spectroscopic Configurations: A Largescale Cross-Laboratory Study, Shuxia Guo, Hugh Byrne, Shiyamala Duraipandian, Fiona Lyng, Claudia Beleites, Ute Neugebauer

Articles

The variable configuration of Raman spectroscopic platforms is one ofthe major obstacles in establishing Raman spectroscopy as a valuable physicochemicalmethod within real-world scenarios such as clinical diagnostics. For such real worldapplications like diagnostic classification, the models should ideally be usable to predictdata from different setups. Whether it is done by training a rugged model with data frommany setups or by a primary-replica strategy where models are developed on a‘primary’setup and the test data are generated on‘replicate’setups, this is only possible if the Raman spectra from different setups are consistent, reproducible, and comparable. However, Raman spectra can be highly sensitive to the …

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

A corpus cavernosum abscess is a rare condition. Usual etiologies include penile injection of erectile dysfunction medications or illicit drugs, priapism, sexually transmitted infections, and trauma; however, there have been reported cases of idiopathic etiology. The most common causative organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, and Bacteroides [1]. Diagnosis is typically made clinically and through imaging (computed tomography [CT] and ultrasound). The first-line treatment is the use of intravenous (IV) antibiotics and surgical drainage. More conservative treatment, however, includes aspiration in conjunction with IV antibiotics [2-3]. Urethral diverticulum (UD) is the formation of a saccular outpouching of the urethral lumen. Symptoms …

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare, malignant, adnexal neoplasm that is derived from the outer root sheath (ORS) of the hair follicle. These tumors predominantly occur in elderly patients on sun-exposed areas, specifically on the head and neck with the face defined as the most common location. The mean age of diagnosis is 70 years old with a slight male predominance. These lesions are commonly identified as a papular, nodular, and sometimes, exophytic. They generally arise de-novo, but may also derivate from an underlying proliferating trichilemmal cyst with a loss of p53, a seborrheic keratosis, a nevus sebaceous, or a …

Improving Nursing Knowledge Of Heart Failure Discharge Self-Care Instructions, Maria Patricia Picar Deza Jan 2020

Improving Nursing Knowledge Of Heart Failure Discharge Self-Care Instructions, Maria Patricia Picar Deza

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patients with heart failure (HF) have recurrent symptoms that lead to frequent hospital readmissions. Moreover, HF is one of the leading causes of 30-day hospital readmissions. Evidence shows that patients with a high level of HF self-care have decreased readmissions. HF self-care education is commonly delivered by the nurse at hospital discharge, and the patient’s transition to self-care is a critical point in the continuum of care. However, nurses must be knowledgeable of patient self-care in HF to effectively convey this information to the patient upon discharge. Therefore, this staff education project question asked whether nursing knowledge of HF patient …
