Objective: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the causative agent for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), one of the most common cancers in Tanzania. We have investigated KSHV prevalence and factors associated with KSHV infection in Tanzania.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of voluntary blood-donors from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Plasma was screened for KSHV, HIV-1, HBV, HCV and Treponema pallidum (syphilis). Associations between KSHV sero-status and risk factors were analyzed. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) are reported to evaluate risk factors of KSHV infection. All tests were 2-tailed, and P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results: The overall KSHV seroprevalence was 56.9%. Significantly …

The first emerged Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China at the end of 2019, then spread to the rest of China [1], followed by the spread of the COVID-19 epidemics into the world caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) [2]. Many epidemiological assessments in different countries from Asia, Europe, and North America have been published [3]. Nevertheless, there are countries in the Middle East like Iraq, with a rapid increase in cases and a high number of deaths, with a lack of studies. It is worth noting that the Iraqi Foreign Ministry was …

Studies have shown that vaccine vectors and route of immunization can differentially activate different arms of the immune system. However, the effects of different HIV vaccine immunogens on mucosal inflammation have not yet been studied. Because mucosal sites are the primary route of HIV infection, we evaluated the cervico-vaginal inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels of Mauritian cynomolgus macaques following immunization and boost using two different SIV vaccine immunogens. The PCS vaccine delivers 12 20-amino acid peptides overlapping the 12 protease cleavage sites, and the Gag/Env vaccine delivers the full Gag and full Env proteins of simian immunodeficiency virus. We showed …

Chloroviruses are large, plaque-forming, dsDNA viruses that infect chlorella-like green algae that live in a symbiotic relationship with protists. Chloroviruses have genomes from 290 to 370 kb, and they encode as many as 400 proteins. One interesting feature of chloroviruses is that they encode a potassium ion (K+) channel protein named Kcv. The Kcv protein encoded by SAG chlorovirus ATCV-1 is one of the smallest known functional K+ channel proteins consisting of 82 amino acids. The KcvATCV-1 protein has similarities to the family of two transmembrane domain K+ channel proteins; it consists of two transmembrane -helixes with a pore region …

Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) is the etiologic agent for Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS). The prognostic utility of KSHV and HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) viremia as well as immunological parameters in clinical management of participants with KS is unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate viral and immunological parameters as predictors of KS treatment responses in participants with KS from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Plasma KSHV-DNA, HIV-1 viral load, total anti-KSHV antibody, KSHV-neutralizing antibody (nAb), cytokine/chemokine levels, and T-cell differentiation subsets were quantified before and after KS treatment in 13 participants with KS and in 13 KSHV-infected asymptomatic control individuals. …

Viruses rely on their host’s translation machinery for the synthesis of their own proteins. Problems belie viral translation when the host has a codon usage bias (CUB) that is different from an infecting virus due to differences in the GC content between the host and virus genomes. Here, we examine the hypothesis that chloroviruses adapted to host CUB by acquisition and selection of tRNAs that at least partially favor their own CUB. The genomes of 41 chloroviruses comprising three clades, each infecting a different algal host, have been sequenced, assembled and annotated. All 41 viruses not only encode tRNAs, but …

Association Between Breastfeeding And Child Stunting In Mexico, Ana Paola Campos, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Summer Sherburne Hawkins
Association Between Breastfeeding And Child Stunting In Mexico, Ana Paola Campos, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Summer Sherburne Hawkins
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Background: Globally, the prevalence of child stunting has been decreasing over the past decades. How-ever, in low-and middle-income countries such as Mexico, stunting is still the most prevalent form of undernutrition affecting a large number of children in the most vulnerable conditions. Breastfeeding has been identified as one of the key affordable and modifiable maternal health behaviors protecting against child stunting. Objective: To examine the association between breastfeeding (defined as never breastfed, any breast-feeding for <6 months, and any breastfeeding for ≥6 months) and other individual-, household-, and area-level factors with child stunting (defined as length/height-for-age-z-score for sex under –2 standard deviations of the World Health Organization child growth standards’ median) in Mexico. Methods: Secondary data analysis using the 2012 Mexican Health and Nutrition Survey, which allowed representativeness of rural and urban areas at national level and among 4 regions in Mexico. Our subset included data on 2,089 singleton Mexican children aged 6–35 months with information on previously identified risk and protective factors for stunting. We conducted fixed-and mixed-effects logistic regression models sequentially controlling for each level of factors. Findings: Overall, 12.3% of children were stunted and 71.1% were breastfed for ≥6 months. Any breast-feeding and being female were consistent protective factors against child stunting across all models. In contrast, child low birthweight, maternal short stature, higher number of children aged <5 years per household, and moderate to severe food insecurity were consistent risk factors for child stunting across all models. Conclusions: According to our findings, efforts to reduce child stunting in Mexico should include prenatal strategies aiming to prevent low birthweight offspring particularly among short-stature women, moderate to severe food insecure households, families with a higher number of children aged <5 years, and indigenous communities. Postnatal components should include multilevel strategies to support breastfeeding.

The use of social media at academic conferences is expanding, and platforms such as Twitter are used to share meeting content with the world. Pathology conferences are no exception, and recently, pathology organizations have promoted social media as a way to enhance meeting exposure. A social media committee was formed ad hoc to implement strategies to enhance social media involvement and coverage at the 2018 and 2019 annual meetings of the Association of Pathology Chairs. This organized approach resulted in an 11-fold increase in social media engagement compared to the year prior to committee formation (2017). In this article, the …
Enhancing Patient Portal Usage, Patricia Pawling
Enhancing Patient Portal Usage, Patricia Pawling
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Abstract
The patient portal was created to offer the opportunity for patients to become more involved with their health care outcomes. However, it has been identified that patient portals are not being widely used. The portal can increase a patient’s knowledge about their health care and provide significant communication exchanges with their health care providers to help improve and understand their care needs. This quality improvement project was implemented to evaluate whether using an educational intervention of the benefits of the portal would increase usage of the portal and patient-provider communication utilizing the portal. Each patient, upon checking in with …

The prehospital use of cuffed endotracheal tubes has become an evidence-based practice recommendation. Uncuffed endotracheal tubes continue to be used by emergency medical services (EMS) that transport injured and ill children to Nemours/Alfred I Dupont Hospital for Children (N/AIDHC). Uncuffed endotracheal tubes are being used in infants and toddlers, but also in older children and adolescents. EMS agencies that refer patients to N/AIDHC were surveyed to determine the status of their implementation and use of cuffed endotracheal tubes. Of six services, two had fully implemented the use of cuffed endotracheal tubes. Dispositional resistance to change among the EMS administrators was …

Antimicrobial resistance is a significant risk that threatens life, increases health complications, decreases antibiotic effectiveness, and increases healthcare cost. Overprescribing of antibiotics in outpatient settings is a key factor that has led to increased antibiotic resistance. There are more than 150 million antibiotics prescribed in outpatients annually; 30 percent of these antibiotic prescriptions are either unnecessary or inappropriately prescribed, with acute respiratory infections holding the position of the highest unnecessary use of antibiotics at 50 percent. Antibiotic stewardship is the effort to improve and measure antibiotic prescribing so that antibiotics are only prescribed when it is appropriate and necessary. This …
Every Drop Counts: Quantifying Blood Loss Can Lead To Early Detection And Intervention For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Christina Bouikidis
Every Drop Counts: Quantifying Blood Loss Can Lead To Early Detection And Intervention For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Christina Bouikidis

Abstract
A visual estimation has been the standard measurement for blood loss post vaginal or cesarean section delivery. Research has shown that visual estimation also known as estimated blood loss has led to an underestimation of total blood loss volume. This results in over 100,000 women per year in the United States that experience an adverse effect due to delayed recognition and treatment for postpartum hemorrhage. By quantifying blood loss, the volume is measured by a one to one ratio; one-gram weight is equal to one-milliliter blood volume. To promote the evidence-based practice of quantifying blood loss, a quality improvement …
Evaluating The Implementation Of A Risk Screening Tool To Decrease The Incidence Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting, Lauren E. Stoltzfus
Evaluating The Implementation Of A Risk Screening Tool To Decrease The Incidence Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting, Lauren E. Stoltzfus
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) continues to occur despite medical advances over the years. PONV decreases patient satisfaction, can lead to postoperative complications such as dehydration and suture dehiscence, and it increases hospital costs. Evidence in the literature suggests a preoperative risk assessment screening and prophylactic antiemetic administration can decrease the incidence of PONV. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a risk assessment tool and to determine if the tool would decrease the incidence of PONV. This quality improvement project involved collecting pre-intervention PONV data over a 6-week time period. The pre-intervention incidence was …

Young women are diagnosed with breast cancer; and young women die from breast cancer. This qualitative dissertation seeks to prove the significance of lowering the mammography age from 40 years old to 30 years old. Current policy and programs correlate to the mandated age of 40 years old, unless the woman is at high risk; such as having a family cancer history. This dissertation also seeks to implement an addendum to insurance policies to cover for younger women to have mammography screening in the event they are younger than the recommended age. The purpose of this study was to examine …

Middle cerebral artery occlusion in rodents remains a widely used model of ischemic stroke. Recently, we reported the occurrence of retinal ischemia in animals subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion, owing in part to the circulatory juxtaposition of the ophthalmic artery to the middle cerebral artery. In this study, we examined the eye hemodynamics and visual deficits in middle cerebral artery occlusion-induced stroke rats. The brain and eye were evaluated by laser Doppler at baseline (prior to middle cerebral artery occlusion), during and after middle cerebral artery occlusion. Retinal function-relevant behavioral and histological outcomes were performed at 3 and 14 …

Pathological progression of stroke in the peripheral and central nervous systems (PNS and CNS) is characterized by multiple converging signalling pathways that exacerbate neuroinflammation-mediated secondary cell death. This creates a need for a novel type of immunotherapy capable of simultaneously lowering the synergistic inflammatory responses in the PNS and CNS, specifically the spleen and brain. Previously, we demonstrated that partial major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II constructs can be administered subcutaneously to promote histological and behavioural effects that alleviate common symptoms found in a murine model of transient stroke. This MHC class II manipulates T cell cytokine expression in both …
