Uninsured/Underinsured: Who's Problem Is It?, Manpreet Kaur
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
The problem of uninsured and underinsured in terms of health care was implored in the population of the United States of America. Other developed nations have implemented universal health care whereas the United States have fallen behind. It is an ongoing problem in the nation, and it is not only the problem of the people who face being uninsured and underinsured. It is everyone’s problem because it affects the economy as a whole and every person is affected by the way the country decides to treat health care. Nurses, as health care professionals, have the opportunity to help patients access …

Universal Healthcare: Good Or Bad?, Danielle Tait
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
The topic of universal healthcare seems to come up quite a bit in political platforms, but what does it really mean for Americans? By allowing universal healthcare, instead of private insurance companies, we as a nation will see an increase in healthy citizens, the economy will save money, and patients will be more satisfied with their healthcare. Although we do not have concrete evidence, studies project that universal healthcare will bring immense benefits to America’s healthcare.

Mindful Meditation As An Intervention To Improve The Quality Of Life In Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review, Sarah Peiser, Tyler Hunyara, Kyle Reese, Joseph Grzech, Laurie Brogan
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
Abstract:
Background: One of the main aspects of Parkinson's disease is its neuropathic degeneration and its destruction on the person's mind and body connection. Mindful meditation is the practice of self -awareness and has been shown to cause a reduction in non-motor symptoms such as decreasing blood pressure, treating heart disease, relieving stress, and reducing chronic pain. These changes can lead to perceived improvement in the patient’s quality of life. If there is the possibility for psychological changes in the body, then there may be potential in using it to treat neuropathic degenerative diseases without the harmful side effects …

Staging Of Twin-To-Twin Transfusion Syndrome Using Ultrasound, Mikayla Catherine Girard
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a rare condition found in identical twins in which the fetuses share a placenta. It is diagnosed between 16-24 weeks of gestation using ultrasound imaging and the Quintero staging system. The Quintero staging system includes 5 stages, which are categorized by sonographic findings to include abnormal Doppler findings, amount of amniotic fluid, as well as determining which twin is the recipient and which is the donor. The last stage determines if fetal demise in one or both twins has occurred. Dr. Quintero’s staging system has led to an agreement on the condition of the fetuses, …

The Development And Trial Of Systematic Visual Search: A Visual Inspection Method Designed To Improve Current Workplace Risk Assessment Practice, Victor Hrymak, Jan Devries
Reports
Visual inspection is a core element in hazard identification. However, poorly conducted visual inspections are problematical for workplace inspection practice as observable hazards that should be seen, are often missed. To address this problem, a novel method; systematic visual search, was developed and tested under randomised controlled trial conditions using commercial kitchens as workplaces. A total of 211 participants were recruited and in the control condition, N = 104 conducted their visual inspection as normal. In the experimental condition, N = 107 received training in the use of systematic visual search. Control group participants were only able to identify a …

2020 Faculty Bibliography
We investigated the effect of a comprehensive community program composed of exercise, mindfulness practice, and education on motor function and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD). Thirty-six participants completed physical and quality-of-life assessments independently at baseline and 12 months. Physical assessments showed stability or improvement in functional mobility, integrated strength, and walking ability over the 1-year interval. PDQ-39 measures showed improvement in 6 of 8 indices: mobility, activities of daily living, emotional well-being, stigma reduction, social support, and bodily discomfort. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of exercise, mindfulness, and education in community and group settings.

Background Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are in dire need to improve their health outcomes. Although Global Health Capacity Building (GHCB) initiatives are recommended approaches, they risk being ineffective in the absence of standardized evaluation methods. This study systematically reviews evaluation approaches for GHCB initiatives in LMICs. Methods We searched the Medline (OVID), PubMed, Scopus, and Embase.com databases for studies reporting evaluation of a GHCB initiative in a LMIC from January 1, 2009 until August 15, 2019. To differentiate them from intervention, prevention, and awareness initiatives, included articles reported at least one approach to evaluate their learning modality. We excluded …
