The Effects Of Video Instruction Versus Verbal Instruction On High Intensity Interval Exercise Performance: A Pilot Analysis, Chase Castleberry, David J. Buckley, Sarah Drake, Malcolm T. Whitehead, James R. Rowe Jr
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
It has been indicated that music and motivational videos can have a positive impact on high-intensity treadmill performance in trained athletes. It has also been shown that live or recorded video exercise instructions have an overall positive effect on exercise performance accuracy in upper extremity exercises compared to written or verbal instructions in adults with no shoulder pathologies. It is unclear whether exercise instructions given via a home workout video has any effects on non-equipment based high-intensity interval exercise performance. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether exercising along with pre-recorded video instructions positively impacts overall exercise …

Type 2 diabetes (T2D), the most common form of diabetes (90-95% of diagnoses), is marked by decreased insulin sensitivity (insulin resistance) or a defect in insulin secretion. T2D disrupts nutrient signaling where the body cannot maintain adequate blood glucose levels. Inability to receive glucose in skeletal muscle due to insulin resistance in T2D results in oxidative stress and increased muscle atrophy. Properly regulated glucose uptake is pivotal for healthy aging and maintenance of the skeletal muscle system. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of nutrient deprivation on human skeletal muscle metabolism, with an emphasis …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The prevalence of shoulder pain has been documented to be as high as 56% among astronauts who perform extravehicular activities (EVA) while training. The prevalence of shoulder injuries in astronauts required NASA to assemble a research team, called the Shoulder Tiger Team, nearly 20 years ago. In 2003, this team concluded that the majority of the shoulder injuries occur while the astronaut is wearing the hard upper torso unit (HUT) of their space suit during EVA training missions in the neutral buoyancy lab (NBL). These injuries typically carry-over to the actual mission, and required EVAs, which can negatively affect job …

Contribution Of The Ankle, Knee, And Hip To Total Lower Extremity Internal/External Rotation, Dylan P. Lidge, Tal Amasay, Vered Arbel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The nature of the ankle, knee, and hip interaction can profoundly impact the movement patterns of the lower extremities. The ability to internally and externally rotate the lower extremity is essential in order to effectively absorb and apply force. In previous studies, most measurements have been conducted in 2D using a protractor, while mainly evaluating the hip. Dysfunction in any joint throughout the kinetic chain can lead to inefficient movement patterns that can compromise performance and potentially lead to injury. Appreciating the complexity of the lower extremity brings to attention the importance of any segments that are compromised. PURPOSE: …

An Assessment Of The Potential For Standardizing Various Measures Of Arterial Stiffness, Taha A. Alhalimi, Jisok Lim, Hirofumi Tanaka
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Arterial stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Different measures of arterial stiffness have been used to assess the impacts of exercise training interventions. One of the primary problems faced by investigators conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses is the lack of standardized methodology to evaluate and compare efficacies of the existing and newly conducted exercise interventions on arterial stiffness. The reference standard measure of arterial stiffness is pulse wave velocity (PWV) while other commonly-used methodologies are ultrasound-derived arterial compliance and distensibility. PURPOSE: To describe standardized equations to convert common ultrasound-based measures of arterial stiffness (arterial compliance, distensibility, ß-stiffness …

Exploring The Potential Role Of Family History Of Hypertension On Racial Differences In Sympathetic Vascular Transduction, Jane N. Cloud, Ben E. Young, Jody L. Greaney, Paul J. Fadel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The prevalence of hypertension in Non-Hispanic Black (BL) men surpasses all other racial groups. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated exaggerated vasoconstrictor and blood pressure (BP) responses to spontaneous bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA; sympathetic vascular transduction) in young, healthy BL men compared to their Non-Hispanic White (WH) counterparts. Because a family history of hypertension (FHH) further compounds cardiovascular risk, we wanted to begin to explore the potential impact of a positive (+) FHH on sympathetic vascular transduction. Whether a +FHH influences sympathetic vascular transduction in WH and/or BL men remains unknown. PURPOSE: To begin to explore if +FHH …
