Treatment Of Anxiety Using Massage Therapy In A Neurorehabilitation Program, Jennifer Gordon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been considered a silent epidemic. The symptoms post-injury can be pervasive and impact individuals physically, emotionally, and socially. It also creates a financial burden on the individual and society. Finally, it can be challenging to the family and caregivers of these individuals because navigating the healthcare needs can be problematic. An enriched neurorehabilitation program may improve the quality of life and outcomes of the individual with TBI. The diagnosis of anxiety has been found to be a major factor that influences the prognosis. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and pharmacology can assist in the management …

Why I Brought My Mother Home, Barbara L. Gracious

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in the United States more than 16 million adult family members provide care for a relative with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. The economic value contributed by unpaid caregivers is $234 billion dollars. Such caregivers are vital to the ability of the U.S. to meet caretaking needs, as the projected number of individuals suffering from dementia will nearly triple over the next 30 years. A meta-analysis found that decisions to provide family caretaking are rooted in long-standing family relationships. This essay explores one family’s decision to move from long-term institutional care back to family-based care …

Introduction: Although the number of women physicians has been increasing, there may be gender disparities in the assessment of female emergency medicine residents. This study sought to determine if female emergency medicine residents are less likely to become chief residents than males.

Methods: In July 2017, an anonymous survey was distributed to the program coordinators of all accredited emergency medicine residency programs in the United States. The survey requested the number of males and females in each graduating class from 2015 to 2017. The percentage of female residents who were chief residents was calculated and compared to that for males. …

The Great Imitator Strikes Again: A Case Of A Lupus Flare-Up Presenting Like An Acute Abdomen, Emmanouil Kiriakopoulos, Vanessa Perez, Robyn Hoelle

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease affecting all age groups and can manifest in various forms, often making the initial or successive presentations difficult to diagnose. Peritonitis secondary to lupus is a rare manifestation of this disease and the prevalence is said to be much lower in children. We present a case report of an adolescent male with a known history of lupus who presented to the emergency department with a clinical picture consistent with an acute surgical abdomen and underwent an appendectomy. Subsequent workup identified the culprit as a lupus-related peritonitis requiring corticosteroids for resolution.

Periodic Paralysis Syndromes: A T3 Thyrotoxicosis Etiology Presentation And Review Of Literature, Alex Chao, Hossein Akhondi

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Periodic paralysis is a group of muscle diseases that are related to transmembrane ion channels. Dysfunction of these channels causes an increase in sodium-potassium (Na-K) adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) activity that pushes potassium into the cells that result in serum hypokalemia that manifests as muscle weakness. Beta-adrenergic stimulation and insulin sensitivity might also play a role.

Periodic paralysis is divided into hereditary and acquired forms. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is an acquired form of periodic paralysis that manifests as muscle weakness, hypokalemia, and hyperthyroidism. The onset of the symptoms is mainly over the age of 20 and can be triggered by intense physical …

Management Principles To Drive The Creation Of A 21st Century Medical School, Johannes Vieweg, Francois Sainfort, Julie A. Jacko, Paula S. Wales

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction: There are currently no data, blueprints, best practices, or financial models available to guide the creation of a new medical school. Yet, the United States is experiencing unprecedented growth of new allopathic medical schools.

Findings: This article brings logic to the process. It converts the complexity of what is often regarded as an administrative exercise into the first published framework of management principles. Those principles were then translated into a process map and a financial optimization model. All three elements can be successfully implemented for establishing an accredited, value-driven medical education program that minimizes time from inception to implementation, …

Systems Biology Of Ferroptosis: A Modeling Approach., Anna Konstorum, Lia Tesfay, Bibbin T Paul, Frank M Torti, Reinhard Laubenbacher, Suzy V Torti

Faculty Research 2020

Ferroptosis is a recently discovered form of iron-dependent regulated cell death (RCD) that occurs via peroxidation of phospholipids containing polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) moieties. Activating this form of cell death is an emerging strategy in cancer treatment. Because multiple pathways and molecular species contribute to the ferroptotic process, predicting which tumors will be sensitive to ferroptosis is a challenge. We thus develop a mathematical model of several critical pathways to ferroptosis in order to perform a systems-level analysis of the process. We show that sensitivity to ferroptosis depends on the activity of multiple upstream cascades, including PUFA incorporation into the …

Strengthening Capacity For Assessment Of Hiv-Related Data Needs Among Key Populations To Inform Evidence-Based Responses, Amrita Rao, Nikita Viswasam, Stefan Baral

HIV and AIDS

Defining the HIV prevention and treatment needs of key populations who have disproportionate HIV acquisition and transmission risks has been particularly difficult in the context of generalized HIV epidemics where less attention has historically been placed on the HIV prevention and treatment needs of these groups. There is a gap in our understanding of the specific needs of—and ultimately the investment case for the added value of supporting—disproportionately burdened key populations in these settings. In response to this gap, Johns Hopkins University under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Project SOAR implemented a project in partnership with collaborators, …

Factors Associated With First Antenatal Care Booking Among Pregnant Women At A Reproductive Health Clinic In Tanzania: A Cross Sectional Study, Lucy Kisaka, Sebalda Leshabari

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) is a key basic intervention targeting maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the first ANC booking before 12 weeks of gestation. This enhances positive maternal and fetal outcomes through early detection of complications, prompt treatment, referral, and management of expected physiological changes. Despite high ANC coverage (98%), free contacts, and easy accessibility, little is known why few (24%) pregnant women in Tanzania book their first ANC-visit early. This study aimed to identify factors associated with first ANC booking among pregnant women in a Tanzanian reproductive health clinic.

Methods: Systematic …

A Shift In Reality: Virtual And Augmented Systems In Higher And Medical Education, Brian Meyer

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning

Virtual and augmented technologies provide a seamless solution for merging traditional, theoretical learning with practical application in context. Unlike traditional teaching pedagogies, in which lessons are restricted in terms of the use of additional apparatus, pedagogies that involve the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies enable educators to build upon taught concepts to demonstrate the application of those concepts in practice, and allow educators to generate multiple atypical scenarios in order to build competence in practical fields of endeavour. In medical education, virtual and augmented reality tools provide an especially important opportunity for preparation before treating patients in actual …

Considerations For Collecting And Documenting Fgm/C Data By Health Care Providers, Dennis Matanda Feb 2020

Considerations For Collecting And Documenting Fgm/C Data By Health Care Providers, Dennis Matanda

Reproductive Health

Data on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) are rarely collected in health facilities, yet routine collection of facility-based data through other health-seeking visits (e.g., during antenatal care) is considered good medical practice and can be an important source of data. Clinical exams provide an opportunity to identify women and girls who have undergone FGM/C, which is an important step in aiding the prevention of chronic complications that can be difficult to manage later in life. These exams also make it possible to refer those with FGM/C-related complications for specialized treatment. Clinical visits also present an opportunity to discuss prevention of the …
