Use Of Biologics In Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Elizabeth A. Warbasse, Taryn Huizenga Md
Medical Student Research Symposium
Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is an inflammatory papulosquamous disorder of unknown etiology. It is characterized by hyperkeratotic scaling plaques with an orange-red hue, “islands of sparing,” and palmoplantar keratoderma; it may cause erythroderma. There have been no completed controlled clinical trials for the treatment of PRP, and there are no FDA approved treatments at this time; most treatment evidence is derived from case reports. This review of the literature explores the use of various biologics which have been attempted for treatment of widespread or treatment resistant PRP. Some case reports have demonstrated efficacy of anti-IL-17 and anti-IL12/23 agents for PRP …

Upper-Extremity Injuries Are The 2nd Most Common Workplace Injuries From 1992 To 2018, Nikhil R. Yedulla, Dylan S. Koolmees, Eric B. Battista, Syed S. Raza, Zachary A. Montgomery, Charles S. Day
Medical Student Research Symposium
Musculoskeletal injuries occur frequently in the workplace, yet it is unclear whether upper-extremity, lower-extremity, or trunk injuries are the most prevalent. We hypothesize that: (1) trunk injuries are the most common in the overall workplace, and (2) upper-extremity injuries are more common in labor-based industries than non-labor industries. Workplace related injury data from 1992 to 2018 was collected from the Bureau of Labor Statistics “Workplace Injuries & Illnesses” database. Occurrence of trunk, upper-extremity, and lower-extremity injuries in major industries (agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and healthcare) were aggregated during this time period and compared. Overall workplace related injury occurrence in major industries …

INTRODUCTION: Pain negatively affects the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of adolescents with cancer. The Pain Squad+ smartphone-based application (app), has been developed to provide adolescents with real-time pain self-management support. The app uses a validated pain assessment and personalised pain treatment advice with centralised decision support via a registered nurse to enable real-time pain treatment in all settings. The algorithm informing pain treatment advice is evidence-based and expert-vetted. This trial will longitudinally evaluate the impact of Pain Squad+, with or without the addition of nurse support, on adolescent health and cost outcomes.

Meaning-centered supervision explores participant’s sense of meaning of past, present, and future personal and professional experiences. The series aims to reintegrate selfreflection into clinical practice through experiential exercises, homework journaling, and group discussion. Social workers develop a narrative around themes of professional attitude, living and creating work life, and connections with the social work profession. The goal is to help palliative care social workers create a sense meaning and purpose in their work as they develop their personal and professional identities. Additionally, the hope is to support supervisees through any concerns of burnout and compassion fatigue.
Disease Mongering: How Sickness Sells, Vanessa C. Iroegbulem
Disease Mongering: How Sickness Sells, Vanessa C. Iroegbulem
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
“Disease mongering” is the practice of widening diagnostic boundaries of an illness and promoting their public awareness to expand the markets for treatment and to increase profits. This tactic typically used by pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers, insurance companies, and even some doctors and patient groups, has become a great concern. Disease mongering has since increased in parallel with “medicalization,” which attempts to label normal human conditions as medical problems, thus becoming the subject of medical study, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment. This paper first seeks to examine how an increasing amount of life’s natural conditions and ailments are being seen …

A Case Study Of Barriers To Dental Care In Nebraska, Kaitlin Buhler
A Case Study Of Barriers To Dental Care In Nebraska, Kaitlin Buhler
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
An important aspect of overall health is access to dental care, which is, unfortunately, oftentimes difficult to obtain. This study used data collected from a case study of three registered dentists in Nebraska to investigate the barriers to dental care, and identified the lack of dental insurance, limited access to free or reduced-price dental care, and dental anxiety as perceived barriers to dental care. Factors that did not seem to have an impact were language or ethnicity differences between patients and workers, distance to travel, comfortability with receiving free or reduced-price dental care, knowledge of how often to visit the …

Network-Based Drug Repurposing For Novel Coronavirus 2019-Ncov/Sars-Cov-2, Yuan Hou, Feixiong Cheng
Faculty Scholarship
Human coronaviruses (HCoVs), including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV, also known as SARS-CoV-2), lead global epidemics with high morbidity and mortality. However, there are currently no effective drugs targeting 2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2. Drug repurposing, representing as an effective drug discovery strategy from existing drugs, could shorten the time and reduce the cost compared to de novo drug discovery. In this study, we present an integrative, antiviral drug repurposing methodology implementing a systems pharmacology-based network medicine platform, quantifying the interplay between the HCoV-host interactome and drug targets in the human protein-protein interaction network. Phylogenetic analyses of 15 …

This study intended to evaluate the reliability and validity of a smartphone-based inclinometer application and compare these results to those of the standard clinical goniometer. The study measured the internal shoulder rotation of 19 men and 20 women. One third-year physical therapy student took all the smartphone-based inclinometer measurements, and another took all the clinical standard goniometer measurements. The subjects were randomly placed into set amounts of internal rotation, and then the two measurements were taken. The study found no significant difference between the smartphone-based inclinometer and the goniometer. The reliability between the app and the goniometers was good to …

Traditional Funeral And Burial Rituals And Ebola Outbreaks In West Africa: A Narrative Review Of Causes And Strategy Interventions, Chulwoo Park
Faculty Publications
Introduction: In West Africa, traditional funerals and burials have proven main contributors to the spread of infectious diseases, such as Ebola, plague, the Marburg virus, and others. Although the World Health Organization has provided guidelines for the safe burial process after learning of the culture of the afterlife in Ebola-affected areas, little effort has been made to integrate theoretical interventions and models for changing West Africans’ funeral behavior. This research was conducted to study 1) the background of traditional burial rituals, 2) interventions to contain Ebola outbreaks in West Africa, and 3) a strategic approach to future disease outbreak in …

Exophytic Adiposis Dolorosa (Dercum's Disease) Of The Thigh: A Case Report., Jude L Opoku-Agyeman, Lauren Coffua, Jamee Simone, Terrance Hanley, Amir Behnam
Plastic Surgery Resident Research
Adiposis dolorosa or Dercum's disease is a rare lipomatous disorder characterized by painful lipomas. In this article, we report a case of rather large exophytic adiposis dolorosa causing difficulties with ambulation, and our surgical management of the disorder. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a large exophytic adiposis dolorosa of the upper medial thigh causing problems with mobility. This is also the first reported case of the use of a delayed split-thickness skin graft (STSG) after interval use of wound vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) following dermolipectomy. A 77-year-old female presented with a chronic mass on the medial …
