Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

According to World Health Organization (WHO), fetal death is defined as the death of the fetus prior to its complete expulsion, independent of the duration of pregnancy, thus only ascribing the term stillbirth to fetal deaths in the case of pregnancies after 28 weeks of gestation. The great progress of perinatology care is reflected in a significant reduction in the rate of stillbirths, especially in well-developed countries, with approximately 98% of stillbirth cases now occurring in poor and developing countries. Stillbirth powerfully impacts both the patient and the practitioner. Because nearly half of stillbirth cases result from apparently uncomplicated pregnancies, …

Morphea or localized scleroderma is an uncommon autoimmune and inflammatory disease which affects patients of any age. Even if morphea lesions present systemic symptoms as myalgias or arthritis, it is distinct from systemic sclerosis because it does not associate Raynaud’s phenomena or sclerodactyly, which are encountered in systemic scleroderma. The most common form of morphea in children is `en coup de sabre`, which can alter the local anatomy by deep tissue involvement. In contrast, the most frequent form that affects adults is represented by circumscribed morphea. The initial lesions present an inflammatory phase that manifests in the form of erythematous …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

According to statistical data published in 2019, breast cancer is among the leading causes of death in women worldwide. The serine/threonine kinase (AKT) or protein kinase B (PkB) signaling pathway is activated by phosphorylation processes, which further is associated with cell growth, proliferation, and survival, but also with activation of glucose metabolism. Mutations of the AKT signaling pathway components (especially PI3KCA and PTEN) have been observed in breast cancer patients, which are associated with resistance to hormonal treatment. Many clinical trials are testing the effect of AKT inhibition in order to block the growth and proliferation of breast cancer cells. …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Within its twisted and tight walls, where a hostile and arid environment prevails, the lumen of the digestive tract nests a true microuniverse called the microbiota. The existing relationship between humans and these microorganisms is one in which both benefit, creating a condition called Eubiosis.

The dynamic relationship existing between the microbiota and the human body can be affected at various times, leading to an imbalance that may have important implications on health and generating a condition called Disbiosis.

Recent studies have highlighted possible links between several diseases with incompletely elucidated etiology and disturbances of the microbiota. In this review …

Introduction. The concept of underactive bladder is relatively new. Currently there is no generally accepted definition of this pathology. Diagnosis depends on urodynamic findings, and symptoms are usually rare and intricated with the symptoms of other urinary pathology.

Matherials and methods. This review examines the current literature on underactive bladder regarding pathology, definition, diagnosis, current guidelines, and any further potential medical developments.

Conclusions. Underactive bladder is a poorly understood pathologic condition. Only since 2002 has there been any consensus regarding the definition. The diagnosis relies only on urodynamics; clinical diagnosis is a challenge even for a consultant; and treatment does …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Lipomas, the most common type of benign tumours, are generally developed from adipose tissue and present an incidence of 2.1 per 1000 inhabitants. In addition to lipomas, at least three other maladies of the adipose tissue lead patients to consult a doctor, especially for aesthetic purposes: multiple familial lipomatosis, diffuse congenital lipomatosis, and adiposa doloris. Unlike lipomas, these maladies are characterized by numerous lipomas, encapsulated or not, of different sizes, symmetrical or not, which may appear in the neck, limbs, or the trunk, sometimes being painful. The life quality of these patients is affected, not only from an aesthetic point …

Many patients are not aware that natural products such as fruit juices or plant infusions can cause significant interactions with several drugs, some of which can be dangerous, especially when the medical treatment is for neurological or psychiatric disorders. Among the most predisposed for interacting with drugs are citric juices, particularly grapefruit and plant infusions, especially St John`s wort (Hypericum perforatum). Understanding the mechanism and the frequency of this type of interaction helps to avoid it. The goal of this research was to identify and summarize the most relevant reports on interactions between psychotropic drugs and natural beverages, in order …

Anorexia Nervosa And Reproduction: Connecting Brain To Gonads, Mihaela Poterasu, David L. Rowland, Corina Ciobanu, Simona Fica Apr 2020

Anorexia Nervosa And Reproduction: Connecting Brain To Gonads, Mihaela Poterasu, David L. Rowland, Corina Ciobanu, Simona Fica

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder that predominantly affects young women and is characterized by low caloric intake and a major dissatisfaction with one’s body image. It is often overlooked and, while patients and family seek medical help, emaciation and nutritional misbalances may become extreme and potentially life threatening. Among the many somatic complications, an accumulation of early endocrine adaptations occurs, leading to functional amenorrhea and impaired reproduction as a result of dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Even though these conditions are reversible, long-term consequences may affect the fertility of women with AN and can lead to maternal and …

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring The Mechanisms Through Which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health, Lindsey Robinson, Dylan Hillock, Dr. Josh Novak Apr 2020

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring The Mechanisms Through Which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health, Lindsey Robinson, Dylan Hillock, Dr. Josh Novak

Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference [2018-2020]

Understanding how intimate relationships influence physical health has been an important topic of focus; however, research remains unclear on the mechanisms through which this influence occurs. The purpose of this study was to examine how relationship satisfaction relates to diet quality, through mental health (depression and anxiety) and diet self-efficacy. Using a dyadic mediation model with a sample of 234 heterosexual couples, researchers found that women's higher relationship satisfaction was associated with better diet through lower depression and higher diet self-efficacy. Results revealed the same association between women's relationship satisfaction and diet through lower anxiety. Interestingly, rather than mediation through …

Reproductive Health Needs Among Women In Treatment For Substance Use Disorder, Jaanki Bhakta, Elizabeth Morse, David Phillippi

DNP Projects

Integrated care models for substance use disorder (SUD) and reproductive health care have been proposed as a strategy to increase access to reproductive health care for women in treatment for SUD. This cross-sectional, survey-based study measured how women of childbearing age in residential treatment report their demand for and access to reproductive health care, their pregnancy intention, contraceptive utilization and preference for integrating reproductive health care with their current SUD treatment milieu. Eighty-five percent of the women interviewed (N=108) expressed a desire to prevent pregnancy in the next year, although only one-third (33.6%) were using a form of contraception at …

Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Renal Transplantation In Individuals Undergoing Transplant Evaluation, Cassandra Bruns, Jeannie Giese, David Phillippi, Deonna Moore, Elizabeth Hall Apr 2020

Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Renal Transplantation In Individuals Undergoing Transplant Evaluation, Cassandra Bruns, Jeannie Giese, David Phillippi, Deonna Moore, Elizabeth Hall

DNP Projects

Background: The underutilization of kidney transplant as the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease is influenced by a lack of knowledge, poor attitudes toward transplantation, and various socio-demographic characteristics amongst the patient population. Negative attitudes toward renal transplant disengages the patient from the evaluation process and often hinders their likelihood of receiving a transplant. Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to determine if patients undergoing transplant evaluation had more positive attitudes and greater levels of knowledge about renal transplantation after attending a standardized educational session. Project Design: This project was a cross-sectional study that utilized a pre-test/post-test design …

The Lysosomal Diseases Testing Laboratory: A Review Of The Past 47 Years., David A. Wenger, Paola Luzi Apr 2020

The Lysosomal Diseases Testing Laboratory: A Review Of The Past 47 Years., David A. Wenger, Paola Luzi

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Lysosomal disorders are diseases that involve mutations in genes responsible for the coding of lysosomal enzymes, transport proteins, activator proteins and protein processing enzymes. These defects lead to the storage of specific metabolites within lysosomes resulting in a great variety of clinical features depending on the tissues with the storage, the storage products and the extent of the storage. The methods for rapidly diagnosing patients started in the late 1960's when the enzyme defects were identified eliminating the need for tissue biopsies. The first requests for diagnostic help in this laboratory came in 1973. In that year, patients with Krabbe …

Management Of Type 1 Diabetes: A Family Affair, Emily Grubbs Apr 2020

Management Of Type 1 Diabetes: A Family Affair, Emily Grubbs

Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference [2018-2020]

People who live with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) have to carefully self-administer insulin to keep blood glucose levels in a safe healthy range – a complex and demanding task (WHO, 2016). Social support has been found to alleviate diabetes-stress and increase management behaviors (Mackey et al., 2016). Social support from family members is especially advantageous, however currently no single family-based intervention has been established to show reliable improvements in T1D outcomes (Rosland et al., 2010). A review of the literature reveals that social support promoting autonomy is associated with the best T1D outcomes; social support that undermines autonomy is associated …

Teaching And Researching With A Mental Health Diagnosis: Practices And Perspectives On Academic Ableism, Ann Green, Alyssa _, Lucia Dura, Patrick Harris, Leah Heilig, Bailey Kirby, Jay Mcclintick, Emily Pfender, Rebecca Carrasco Apr 2020

Teaching And Researching With A Mental Health Diagnosis: Practices And Perspectives On Academic Ableism, Ann Green, Alyssa _, Lucia Dura, Patrick Harris, Leah Heilig, Bailey Kirby, Jay Mcclintick, Emily Pfender, Rebecca Carrasco

Rhetoric of Health & Medicine

Abstract: Nine people with mental health diagnoses wrote a dialogue to discuss how we navigate our conditions and ask for accommodations within an academic setting. We cogitate on the challenges of obtaining a diagnosis, how and when we disclose, the affordances and challenges of our symptoms, seeking accommodations, and advocating for ourselves. We consider how current scholarship and other perspectives are changing the conversation about mental health in the academy. We conclude that while the 2008 revisions to the Americans with Disabilities Act have addressed necessary accommodations, that those with mental health conditions are still seeking access.

Population 65 Years And Older Varies By Region And Non-Metro Status In Mississippi: Implications For Covid-19, John J. Green

Population Briefs

Much of the information available to date suggests that novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is of particular concern for people in older age groups, given their increased likelihood of facing complications that could result in hospitalization and risk of death. These patterns hold for Mississippi. The age dimension may be of special concern for rural areas where testing is less frequent, where health infrastructures are underdeveloped, and where populations tend to be older and have more pre-existing chronic conditions than their more urbanized counterparts. It is noteworthy that some regions of the country, including the South, also have younger populations …

Identifying Patients With Major Depression Who Benefit From Ketamine Therapy, Jessi Riel Apr 2020

Identifying Patients With Major Depression Who Benefit From Ketamine Therapy, Jessi Riel

Physician Assistant Capstones

Over the last few years, ketamine has been studied as a possible treatment option for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and TRD. Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that targets the glutaminergic system and produces rapid antidepressant effects from mechanisms that are still incompletely defined.5 In March 2019, the FDA approved intranasal esketamine, an enantiomer of ketamine, as a treatment for those who have failed at least two antidepressant medications.6The approval of esketamine as a treatment option for major depressive disorder is considered a significant breakthrough in psychiatric medicine and provides promise for the future of depression management. Nonetheless, the effects …

Exercise Regimen Recommendations In Type Ii Diabetics And Their Effects On Glucose Control, Emily Schroeder Smith Apr 2020

Exercise Regimen Recommendations In Type Ii Diabetics And Their Effects On Glucose Control, Emily Schroeder Smith

Physician Assistant Capstones

The most effective non-pharmacologic method of reducing the hemoglobin A1c (HgbA1c) levels in type II diabetic patients is still debated. Clinicians evaluating and treating Type II Diabetics (T2DM) generally recommend diet and lifestyle modifications as initial therapy. The medical literature comparing different types of exercise and their effects on glucose control was reviewed with the goal of determining whether aerobic or resistance exercise was more effective for reducing HgbA1c levels in type II diabetics. The more effective form of exercise, if any, could then be recommended in addition to diet and other lifestyle changes. Although the studies were heterogeneous in …

Improving Symptomatic Postural Tachycardia With Pharmacotherapy Versus Physical Conditioning, Heather L. Conklin

Physician Assistant Capstones

An estimated one to three million Americans are affected by orthostatic intolerance, with females under age 35 the most common. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder marked by symptoms of orthostatic intolerance within the first ten minutes of a patient moving from supine to an upright standing position. Patients must experience a sustained heart rate increase of at least 30 bpm (40 for pediatric patients) or greater than 120 bpm in the absence of orthostatic hypotension (OH). A thorough clinical evaluation should be performed prior to head-up tilt (HUT) testing to exclude other causes of tachycardia.

Lessons Learned In Practice-Based Research: Studying Preschool Language Interventions In The Real World, Rachael E. Smyth, Julie Theurer, Lisa Md Archibald, Janis Oram Cardy

PRECISe Preschool Speech and Language Publications

Abstract

Background and aims: Practice-based research holds potential as a promising solution to closing the research-practice gap, because it addresses research questions based on problems that arise in clinical practice and tests whether systems and interventions are effective and sustainable in a clinical setting. One type of practice-based research involves capturing practice by collecting evidence within clinical settings to evaluate the effectiveness of current practices. Here, we describe our collaboration between researchers and clinicians that sought to answer clinician-driven questions about community-based language interventions for young children (Are our interventions effective? What predicts response to our interventions?) and to address …
