Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are the principal source of new myelin in the central nervous system. A better understanding of how they mature into myelin-forming cells is of high relevance for remyelination. It has recently been demonstrated that during developmental myelination, the DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), but not DNMT3A, is critical for regulating proliferation and differentiation of OPCs into myelinating oligodendrocytes (OLs). However, it remains to be determined whether DNA methylation is also critical for the differentiation of adult OPCs during remyelination. After lysolecithin-induced demyelination in the ventrolateral spinal cord white matter of adult mice of either sex, we detected …

Use Of Epidural Anesthesia During Labor Increasing The Risk Of Emergency Cesarean Procedures: An Integrative Literature Review, Maya Rodriguez
Use Of Epidural Anesthesia During Labor Increasing The Risk Of Emergency Cesarean Procedures: An Integrative Literature Review, Maya Rodriguez
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Epidural anesthesia, a pain relief used during labor, causes many risks to vaginal labor yet, most, if not all, doctors will administer it if requested. The main consequence of this pain medication that this paper will focus on is emergency cesarean sections, which lead to a multitude of issues in itself.
Objectives: This study is an integrative review aimed to strive to better understand the risks of both mentioned above, as well as use this information to better educate pregnant women.
Method: Many data bases were searched with the keywords epidural anesthesia, risks, and cesarean …

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a frequent long-term complication of classic galactosemia. The majority of women with this disorder develop POI, however rare spontaneous pregnancies have been reported. Here, we evaluate the effect of D-galactose and its metabolites, galactitol and galactose 1-phosphate, on oocyte quality as well as embryo development to elucidate the mechanism through which these compounds mediate oocyte deterioration. Metaphase II mouse oocytes (n=240), with and without cumulus cells (CCs), were exposed for 4hours to D-galactose (2μM), galactitol (11μM) and galactose 1-phosphate (0.1mM), (corresponding to plasma concentrations in patients on galactoserestricted diet) and compared to controls. The treated …

Addressing Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Hungarian American Populations: A Cultural Exploration Of Transdisciplinary Health Promotion, Nicholas Laszlo, Basil H. Aboul-Enein, Josh Bernstein, Joanna Kruk
Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research
Hungarian Americans share a unique culture of food traditions associated with their value system and way of life. Researchers, health care providers, and nutrition professionals counseling and treating a Hungarian-American population should develop a baseline of cultural understanding to achieve successful and long-lasting behavior change outcomes. The leading causes of death among Hungarians include ischemic heart disease (21.3%), stroke (13.4%), and cirrhosis (5.8%); all are directly or indirectly attributed to a traditional Hungarian diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle. Health behaviors among Hungarian Americans can be partially explained by the Health Belief Model’s value-expectancy construct. Understanding cultural expectations and their …

"The purpose of this study was to develop and test the effectiveness of a Patient-Centered Outcome Aid (PCOA) compared to a control condition of usual care, as patients chose between IV or IP therapy for advanced ovarian cancer. We developed an internet-based decision aid to improve patient-centered outcomes and tested it within a randomized clinical trial. The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical trial development and protocol."
