The Effects Of Lipocalin 2 On Lung Metastasis Of Colorectal And Other Cancers, Lauren Strzyzewski May 2017

The Effects Of Lipocalin 2 On Lung Metastasis Of Colorectal And Other Cancers, Lauren Strzyzewski

Senior Theses

Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) is a member of the lipocalin family of siderophore-binding molecules that can mediate iron trafficking. It acts during the innate immune response and has been implicated in conflicting roles in metastasis, leaving its role undefined. In breast cancer LCN2 was shown in previous studies to both inhibit or promote metastasis. Previous studies the Pena laboratory showed that increasing the serum levels of LCN2 caused a significantly increase in liver metastasis of the poorly metastatic MC-38 colon cancer cell line. In this study, we examined the ability of LCN2 to promote metastasis of colon and other cancers to …

Expression Of Fibroblast Activation Protein On Cardiac Fibroblasts And Relevance To Post-Myocardial Infarction Remodeling, Kaitlyn Swimmer May 2017

Expression Of Fibroblast Activation Protein On Cardiac Fibroblasts And Relevance To Post-Myocardial Infarction Remodeling, Kaitlyn Swimmer

Senior Theses

Cardiovascular disease is an extremely prevalent and costly disease, as it is the number one cause of death in the US. In 2006 alone, cardiovascular disease cost the U.S. over $400 billion from direct healthcare spending and lost-productivity (Mensah & Brown, 2007). According to a study conducted by the CDC in 2012, 26.6 million adults in the US, or 11.6% of the adult population, had been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (CDC, 2015). Each year in the U.S., roughly 635,000 people have a first-time heart attack and about 300,000 have recurrent heart attacks (Mozaffarian D, 2015).

Athos Wearable Technology: A Comparison Study, Sara Desmarais, Madeleine Giess May 2017

Athos Wearable Technology: A Comparison Study, Sara Desmarais, Madeleine Giess

Senior Theses

Technological advances permit the assessment of new variables, and over time miniaturize and make portable equipment that once was restricted research or clinical settings. Validation of the new equipment is essential before it can be used. This study compared Athos Wearable Technology to a standard form of electromyography (EMG). We hypothesized that Athos would produce a similar percent of MVIC data when compared to a standard EMG during a series of movements. Participants performed five movements, once while wearing the Athos pants, and once while wearing Noraxon Wireless EMG Electrodes on their vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris. The …

The Effects Of Childhood Fitness On Adult Metabolic Syndrome And Improving Health Outcomes Through Increasing Fitness In Childhood, Ellen Gardiner May 2017

The Effects Of Childhood Fitness On Adult Metabolic Syndrome And Improving Health Outcomes Through Increasing Fitness In Childhood, Ellen Gardiner

Senior Theses

The importance of childhood and adolescent fitness has shifted over time. In the US, physical fitness test batteries first started to emerge during times of war to assess military preparedness. However, as conscription became less necessary and the US turned to issues at home, these fitness assessments became more focused on health over performance.14 This leads to the question, how is fitness tied to overall health? With this literature review, I examine the relationships between childhood fitness and metabolic syndrome, a group of factors that together raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, or stroke.

Acute ischemic stroke affects over 800,000 US adults annually, with hundreds of thousands more experiencing a transient ischemic attack. Emergent evaluation, prompt acute treatment, and identification of stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack) etiology for specific secondary prevention are critical for decreasing further morbidity and mortality of cerebrovascular disease. The Biomarkers of Acute Stroke Etiology (BASE) study is a multicenter observational study to identify serum markers defining the etiology of acute ischemic stroke. Observational trial of patients presenting to the hospital within 24 h of stroke onset. Blood samples are collected at arrival, 24, and 48 h later, and RNA …

Encouraging Medicare Advantage Enrollees To Switch To Higher Quality Plans: Assessing The Effectiveness Of A ‘‘Nudge’’ Letter, Benjamin L. Howell, Partha Deb, Sai Ma, Rachel O. Reid, Jesse Levy, Gerald F. Riley, Patrick H. Conway, William H. Shrank

Publications and Research

There are considerable quality differences across private Medicare Advantage insurance plans, so it is important that beneficiaries make informed choices. During open enrollment for the 2013 coverage year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sent letters to beneficiaries enrolled in low-quality Medicare Advantage plans (i.e., plans rated less than 3 stars for at least 3 consecutive years by Medicare) explaining the stars and encouraging them to reexamine their choices. To understand the effectiveness of these low-cost, behavioral ‘‘nudge’’ letters, we used a beneficiary-level national retrospective cohort and performed multivariate regression analysis of plan selection during the 2013 open enrollment …

Optimal Nutrition For Endurance Exercise: A Systematic Review, Sarah E. Andrus Ms, Bruce W. Andrus Md Ms May 2017

Optimal Nutrition For Endurance Exercise: A Systematic Review, Sarah E. Andrus Ms, Bruce W. Andrus Md Ms

Dartmouth Scholarship

Introduction

As fatigue in endurance events correlates with depletion of muscle glycogen, the traditional approach to nutritional support has been carbohydrate loading. However, there has been recent interest in improving athletic endurance performance by novel diets in the days to weeks prior to endurance events, the pre-event meal, and during exercise.

Methods

We searched PubMed and SCOPUS for randomized trials published from 1992-2017 with a primary endpoint of endurance performance. We identified 407 citations which were examined against our inclusion criteria of randomization or crossover allocation to diet and for which a primary outcome was endurance performance.

This study examined the effect of a text messaging intervention and use of activity trackers with a companion social website on the body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, physical fitness, and PA self-efficacy of middle school children. Children aged 11-14 (n=102) were randomly assigned to one of three groups for a 10-week intervention: activity tracker group; …

College Student Health: How Cooking Can Promote Nutrition And A Healthy Diet, Sara Garzia May 2017

College Student Health: How Cooking Can Promote Nutrition And A Healthy Diet, Sara Garzia

Senior Theses

This paper focuses on college student health and the manner in which nutrition and overall health can be improved by cooking. College students are at a high risk of poor health because of the college lifestyle. They are faced with a great deal of demands on their time from classes, extracurricular activities, work, and friends. Many students cite this lack of time as one of the main reasons they do not prepare their meals at home. Students also struggle with the perceived inadequacy of their cooking skills, and therefore find it much easier to purchase prepared food instead of making …

Hallmark Features Of Stem Anatomy In The Family Lamiaceae, Catherine Garner May 2017

Hallmark Features Of Stem Anatomy In The Family Lamiaceae, Catherine Garner

Senior Theses

Lamiaceae is a cosmopolitan family, containing around 236 genera and 7,534 species. The family has been the object of considerable taxonomic controversy and ultimate revision, especially concerning subfamilial and tribal limits. A broad-based anatomical approach has been undertaken to assess comparative anatomy of the stem as a reasonable systematic technique. The stems of several members of the family were compared. Cross-sections were made using the recently invented hydromicrotome, fixed, and examined at magnifications of 40x, 100x, and 400x. The common anatomical features of each sectioned species were determined, and used to establish a basic guide to the hallmark stem features …

The Turnover Of Succinated Proteins In The Adipocyte For The Treatment Of Diabetes, Dominique Jacobs May 2017

The Turnover Of Succinated Proteins In The Adipocyte For The Treatment Of Diabetes, Dominique Jacobs

Senior Theses

In the United States 29.1 million people have diabetes, or 1 out of every 11 people. The rate of new cases of diagnosed diabetes has begun to fall, but the numbers are still very high. 86 million people are living with prediabetes, a serious health condition that increases a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and other chronic diseases (1). Unfortunately, 90% of those 86 million people are unaware that they are at risk. The health and economic costs for both types of diabetes are enormous: more than 20% of health care spending is committed to people …

Effects Of Heavy Episodic Drinking On Muscle Quality In College Students, Allison G. Leggett May 2017

Effects Of Heavy Episodic Drinking On Muscle Quality In College Students, Allison G. Leggett

Honors Thesis

College is a critical time in peak muscle mass development and evidence suggests heavy episodic drinking (HED), defined as four or more alcoholic drinks for females and five or more drinks for males in one sitting, may inhibit acute and chronic muscle remodeling. Muscle quality (MQ), or the strength per lean body mass, acts as an indicator of muscle performance and reflects the physiological, functional and structural composition of muscle tissue. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute and longitudinal effects of HED on MQ and other body compositional variables in college students. Methods: A total of …

Treatment-Related Decisional Conflict, Quality Of Life, And Comorbid Illness In Older Adults With Cancer, Jeannette Kates, Phd, Msn, Gnp-Bc

College of Nursing Posters

As the aging population in the nation increases, cancer diagnoses in this age group will also increase. The many chronic medical conditions associated with older adults are confounded by a diagnosis of cancer. Older adults with cancer are at risk for physical, psychological, and functional decline as a result of not only the cancer, but also the cancer treatment. In their current research agenda, the Oncology Nursing Society identified the need for research related to multiple comorbidities in older adults with cancer. This study utilized a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study design to explore the relationships between and among treatment-related decisional …

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut May 2017

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

As Dholakia and Atik (2016) emphasize in the opening article of MGDR, we can “live with” labels such as advanced and emerging, rich, mid-income and poor, ancient and modern (and postmodern), Third World and First World. In addition to these labels, this review brings out labels and dualities such as able and disabled, reasonable and unreasonable. Introducing disability studies to the marketing field, this review analyzes Jenny Slater’s book which helps us gain a critical perspective on disability research.

This is a secondary data analysis of the initial survey data from a home visiting center in 2009. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and multivariate logistic regression. We observed significant differences in perceived health between men and women based on their socioeconomic status. Type of medical insurance was strongly associated with depressive symptoms among the men and women. Results also indicated that being unschooled was significantly related …

Perceived Importance Of Resistance Training In Collegiate Dancers, Kayla Major May 2017

Perceived Importance Of Resistance Training In Collegiate Dancers, Kayla Major

Graduate Theses

Dancers are artistic athletes that use their bodies as their instrument. Dance is a sport that requires significant skill and higher levels of fitness. Unfortunately, dancers are not as physically fit as sport athletes. This may not only increase their risk of injury, but also limit their maximum dance performance. Resistance training offers significant physical and psychological health benefits. But, there is very limited research regarding dancers’ resistance training habits. The results of the few studies that exist unanimously suggest that there is no detriment to the aesthetics of dance, rather improvements in dance elements as a result of improved …

Factors That Effect Lower Extremity Muscle Strains In Collegiate Track And Field, Syrena Spanburgh-Hess May 2017

Factors That Effect Lower Extremity Muscle Strains In Collegiate Track And Field, Syrena Spanburgh-Hess

Graduate Theses

Both the number of recreational and competitive runners and the number of injuries have increased over the past decade. Track and field includes a variety of events, which differ in volume and intensity. The variability of the sport causes both chronic and acute injuries. Although chronic injuries are most prevalent, muscular strains are the most frequent acute injury (Jacobsson et al., 2011). Muscular strains have accounted for approximately 17% of all track and field injuries (Kluitenberg et al., 2014). A variety of predisposing factors for muscular strains have been described. The purpose of this study was to investigate causative factors …

The Effect Of Education On Parental Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Vaccines, Alexandra Walsh, Rachel Quinn May 2017

The Effect Of Education On Parental Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Vaccines, Alexandra Walsh, Rachel Quinn

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Introduction: The importance, safety, and efficacy of vaccines has been questioned more than ever despite the clear and significant effectiveness of vaccines to reduce the incidence of severe illnesses.1 Currently, the only required education before administering vaccines is the Vaccine Information Statements (VIS), which is provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) at each vaccination visit. These statements outline benefits and risks of vaccines but are written at an above-average reading level and do not directly address specific vaccine concerns. Many vaccine concerns can be assuaged with proactive education by providers at early well-child visits.

Objective: To determine …

Smith et al. showed that total acne lesion counts decreased more in the low glycemic load group (p = 0.03)1. Reynolds et al. did not show a significant decrease in acne score with a low glycemic load diet (p=0.244)2 …

Diagnostic Effectiveness Of High-Sensitivity Troponins, Sean R. Bodin, Jacqueline Ramirez May 2017

Diagnostic Effectiveness Of High-Sensitivity Troponins, Sean R. Bodin, Jacqueline Ramirez

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Background: Acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) are a leading cause of death in the United States. The key to increasing survivability is early recognition to expedite the proper treatment modalities. In conjunction with the clinical presentation and electrocardiograms, the use of cardiac biomarkers is exponentially important in not only recognizing a cardiac event but also determining the extent of injury. Advancement in laboratory technology has led to the development of high-sensitive troponin (hs-troponin) assays which can detect smaller cardiac troponin serum levels compared to conventional troponin assays. This implies that the use of hs-troponin assays is more effective in the …
