Improving A Clinic's Process To Increase Preventative Health Screenings, Melissa A. Weathington May 2017

Improving A Clinic's Process To Increase Preventative Health Screenings, Melissa A. Weathington

Master's Projects and Capstones

Performing health screenings on patients is a potential way to prevent or even identify health issues that may have not otherwise been apparent. In recognition of the importance of this matter, this CNL aims to improve and increase the percentage rate of depression and cervical cancer screenings by addressing barriers that have hindered staff from performing these health screenings. This CNL project took place at a health clinic located in the marginalized community of San Francisco. The health clinic’s primary focus is to foster care to the underserved population—homeless, uninsured, LGBTQ, people of color—and provide them with qualitative patient care. …

The Voluntary Practice Of Eugenics: Risk-Taking And Religiosity As Determinants Of Attitudes Toward Conceiving Children With Potential Genetic Disorders And Inheritable Diseases, Roy K. Chen, Allison R. Fleming, Lisa Kuhn, Amanda L. Foster

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes toward the voluntary practice of eugenics among people with high-risk inheritable diseases and genetic disorders. Participants consisted of 426 students attending two large public universities in the south and southwestern regions of the United States. The study used the modified scale of attitudes toward mental retardation and eugenics, the risk-taking questionnaire, and the dimensions of religious ideology importance scale. A general linear model was tested to answer the research question. The results showed that the model was significant (p < 0.001; adjusted r2 of 0.078). Significant main effects were found in race [F (4,378) = 2.538, p = 0.04, η² = 0.026], risk avoidance [F (1,378) = 12.536, p < 0.001, η² = 0.032] and importance of religion [F (1,378) = 5.530, p = 0.019, η² = 0.014]. Cultural, ethnic, and religious variables influenced people’s views toward disability. One’s perception of both disability and its impact on quality of life will influence his or her feelings about eugenics and babies with congenital conditions.

Flesh And Blood, Clayton Petras May 2017

Flesh And Blood, Clayton Petras

Graduate School of Art Theses

In my work, I look for ways to visualize and document the degenerative mental disease of Parkinson’s and transform it into portrayals of the disease itself, its effects, and those it afflicts. Being a physical breakdown of the body, both popular culture and my own corporal understanding influence my interpretation and representation. This document outlines those influences and their buildup towards a shared understanding of the interests behind the work, as well as implies what the work does through these contexts.

How do we give identity to a disease that is difficult to diagnose or view on medical technology, currently …

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Skin-Care Team, Anna Therianos Konstantin

Master's Projects and Capstones

In the United States, pressure injuries (PIs) cost $9.1–$11.6 billion per year and claim more than 60,000 patient lives. The large Northern California hospital where this CNL project was conducted has had an 8.33% incidence of hospital-acquired PIs at or greater than stage two in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Pressure injury prevention was not a high priority for the nursing staff; nurses were unaware of current PI prevention protocols or the PI prevalence in the PICU. The goals are to reduce PIs by 20% in 3 months, increase PI nursing education, and improve patient outcomes. Nursing skin-care rounds …

Improving Breastfeeding Rates By Using Glucose Gel To Treat Newborn Hypoglycemia, Madena Barak May 2017

Improving Breastfeeding Rates By Using Glucose Gel To Treat Newborn Hypoglycemia, Madena Barak

Master's Projects and Capstones

Newborn hypoglycemia occurs in 5-15% of newborns during the postnatal period (Weston et al., 2016). Typical treatment for hypoglycemia includes supplementing with formula, which causes a decrease in breastfeeding rates, decreasing patient satisfaction, and interfering with maternal-infant bonding. To combat this issue, a large community hospital in Southern California used Lewin’s Theory of Planned Change to implement an alternative intervention for the treatment of newborn hypoglycemia. Evidence based articles as well as collaboration with surrounding hospitals was used to support the use of oral dextrose gel instead of supplemental formula to treat newborn hypoglycemia. The hospital’s revised treatment protocol on …

Background

Differential plasma concentrations of circulating lipid species are associated with pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Whether the wide inter-individual variability in the plasma lipidome contributes to the genetic basis of T2D is unknown. Here, we investigated the potential overlap in the genetic basis of the plasma lipidome and T2D-related traits.

Results

We used plasma lipidomic data (1202 pedigreed individuals, 319 lipid species representing 23 lipid classes) from San Antonio Family Heart Study in Mexican Americans. Bivariate trait analyses were used to estimate the genetic and environmental correlation of all lipid species with three T2D-related traits: risk of T2D, …
