Kingella Kingae: Emerging Outbreaks In Daycare Facilities, Kimberly Iracki Jul 2017

Kingella Kingae: Emerging Outbreaks In Daycare Facilities, Kimberly Iracki

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

In today’s Western countries, families are more likely than those of past decades to include two full-time working parents. This has led to an increase in he number of children attending daycare or some form of childcare outside the home. It is known that close quarters or semi-confined setting increase the risk of certain infections. Out of these infections, an emerging pediatric pathogen, that has also shown some prevalence in adults, is Kingella kingae.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Madeleine Smith Jul 2017

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Madeleine Smith

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

My chosen research topic is systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), otherwise commonly known as lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects many different body systems, and has no cure. There are a plethora of symptoms associated with the disease, and symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Additionally, lupus can progress gradually and has periods of flares and remission like several other autoimmune diseases. All of these factors combined can make this disease very hard to diagnose, and therefore treat. By researching and learning more about lupus, I strive to gain a better understanding of this disease and its …

Celiac Disease, Julia Hoeft Jul 2017

Celiac Disease, Julia Hoeft

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Digestive disorders are among a long list of conditions patients may seek care for. In recent years, celiac disease is a digestive disorder that has received much attention from both patients and the healthcare community. Due to the considerable symptom variance among patients, celiac disease often goes undiagnosed or is mistaken for another disease process. Celiac disease has become the one of the most common autoimmune inherited disorders in the United States. Celiac disease can range from asymptomatic to malabsorption in severe cases. The only treatment option currently available to patients is a life-long gluten free diet.

Coronary Artery Disease, Matthew Jarboe Jul 2017

Coronary Artery Disease, Matthew Jarboe

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a highly prevalent disease in the United States. CAD is a major burden for the U.S. health care system. CAD can causes heart failure, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction. Pathophysiology is important in CAD because its study has led to powerful intervention and will lead to better treatment recommendations from providers. There are modifiable risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus that should be controlled when possible. Lifestyle changes can also have a significant impact on the course of CAD.

Type Ii Diabetes, Michelle Irwin Jul 2017

Type Ii Diabetes, Michelle Irwin

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The chosen topic to research is Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DMII). DMII has become a rampant disease in the United States and is becoming more common. The United States has an alarming rate of new diagnosis of DMII (Chen, 2012). One of the most disappointing facts is that it can be prevented. DMII is not a disease that one has to have for a lifetime. An important detail of this disease is that it has so many comorbidities. Many people in the general population think that they can just take a pill or take insulin to control it. However, even …

A Study Of Rural High School Principals’ Perceptions As Social Justice Leaders, Shelly Albritton, Stephanie Huffman, Rhonda Mcclellan Jul 2017

A Study Of Rural High School Principals’ Perceptions As Social Justice Leaders, Shelly Albritton, Stephanie Huffman, Rhonda Mcclellan

Administrative Issues Journal

This multisite case study explores how rural principals in high poverty schools in a Southern state that had identified themselves as social justice leaders perceived student diversity, specifically LGBTQ students, and how they sustained a socially-just school climate for all students. Using a qualitative approach lent itself to understanding the principals’ descriptions of themselves as social justice leaders in their respective school and community contexts through their conversations (Creswell, 2007; Marshall & Rossman, 2016). The investigators drew from Theoharis’ (2007, 2009) and Bishop’s (2012) studies to serve as the theoretical framework guiding this study. The results indicated that the principals …

A Faculty Woman Of Color And Micro-Invalidations At A White Research Institution: A Case Of Intersectionality And Institutional Betrayal, Doris Carroll

Administrative Issues Journal

Faculty Women of Color should be able to thrive and grow at our best research and teaching institutions. Assuring their academic and professional success requires that an institution’s academic culture shift from a White, male-dominated, meritocratic environment to a global enrichment campus, one that values the richness and diversity of talent that Faculty Women of Color can contribute as scholars. Using CRT and Institutional Betrayal Theory as a context for understanding their experiences, this paper presents a personal narrative regarding the micro-invalidations that Faculty Women of Color face at America’s White research institutions. The outcome of this discussion offers systemic …

Factors Contributing To The Persistence Of African American And Hispanic Undergraduate Males Enrolled At A Regional Predominantly White Institution, Reginal R. Hall

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this study is to explore factors that may contribute to the persistence and graduation rates of African American and Hispanic undergraduate males enrolled at regional four-year public universities in Texas. African American and Hispanic males have lower graduation rates in both secondary and post-secondary education than their White peers (Harper, 2010; Swail, Cabrera, Lee, & Williams, 2013). The qualitative research investigated characteristics that exist among African American and Hispanic undergraduate males who have persisted and were retained at the university through their senior academic year. The research problem was explored through the lens of critical race theory …

Emdin proposes a theory of reality pedagogy and provides a framework, the Seven Cs, for practical implementation of the approach in the urban classroom.

A Systems Theory Approach To The District Central Office’S Role In School-Level Improvement, Jackie Mania-Singer Jul 2017

A Systems Theory Approach To The District Central Office’S Role In School-Level Improvement, Jackie Mania-Singer

Administrative Issues Journal

This qualitative case study used General Systems Theory and social network analysis to explore the relationships between the members of a district central office and principals of elementary schools within an urban school district in the Midwest. Findings revealed sparse relationships between members of the district central office and principals, more opportunities for higher performing schools to participate in decision making, and few opportunities for all schools to provide feedback to the district, resulting in a centralized network structure that may inhibit the transfer of knowledge and communication, and ultimately, hinder school-level improvement efforts.

Oral Angiomyolipoma: Report Of A Rare Case And Review Of The Literature, Wichuda Kongsong, Sompid Kintarak

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign tumor that usually affects the kidney. Extrarenal AML is uncommon. Intraoral AML is extremely rare and only 13 cases have been reported in the English-language literature. Although oral AML shares the terminology with renal AML, it presents as solitary mass not associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and is negative for human melanoma marker HMB-45. This article reports a rare case of intraoral AML presenting on the hard palate of a 52-year-old male patient. The surgical excision of this lesion was considered curative and no recurrence has been documented. The literature concerning intraoral AML is also …

Investigating The Motivation Factors Of Food Choice During The Transition Of High School Into College Life Among College Students Attending Western Kentucky University, Yu-Hsuan Chen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Most individuals with chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, were diagnosed in their late adulthood. The fact that these chronic diseases is a consequence of long-term unhealthy behaviors is often ignored. The unhealthy behaviors are often traced back to the young adulthood (age 18-25). Some young adults may participate in unhealthy behaviors, such as unhealthy diet, under the perception that they are “still young”. However, it is often overlooked that once a habit is established, it is difficult to eliminate or modify it. Furthermore, the awareness that the development of the chronic disease is …

The Relationships Between Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Frequency And Suicidal Behaviors, Depression, And Anxiety: A Curvilinear Analysis, Sherry Elizabeth Woods Jul 2017

The Relationships Between Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Frequency And Suicidal Behaviors, Depression, And Anxiety: A Curvilinear Analysis, Sherry Elizabeth Woods

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) involves the deliberate damage of one’s own bodily tissue without suicidal intent. A number of psychological disorders and indicators of distress are correlated with the behavior, including suicidal behaviors (e.g. Whitlock & Knox, 2007), depression (e.g. Ross & Heath, 2002), and anxiety (e.g. Victor & Klonksy, 2014), and yet the research literature has been mixed on whether increased frequency of NSSI is correlated with increased levels of these variables. The present study hypothesized that these relationships are curvilinear. Data from a larger study were analyzed using curvilinear regression analyses, and hypotheses were partially supported. Curvilinear relationships were …

Absence Of Typical Haversian System From The Compact Bone Of Some Reptile And Bird Species, Yasser Ahmed, Mohamed Abdelsabourv Khalaf, Fatma Khalil

Histology Collection

Background and Objective: Mammalian compact bone is composed mostly of Haversian system. Although there are many studies describing the typical Haversian system in mammals, there are few studies conducted on bones from non-mammalian species. The objective of the current study was to investigate the existence of the typical Haversian system in compact bones from reptiles and birds.

Materials and Methods: Femora were collected from geckos, Nile monitors, sparrows, ducks and geese. Samples were then, fixed in 10% paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraffin. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or Von Kossa and then examined using light microscopy.

Bronchopleural Fistula Resolution With Endobronchial Valve Placement And Liberation From Mechanical Ventilation In Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Case Series, Haris Kalatoudis, Nikhil Meena, Fuad Zeid, Yousef Shweihat Jul 2017

Bronchopleural Fistula Resolution With Endobronchial Valve Placement And Liberation From Mechanical Ventilation In Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Case Series, Haris Kalatoudis, Nikhil Meena, Fuad Zeid, Yousef Shweihat

Internal Medicine

Patients who have acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with persistent air leaks have worse outcomes. Endobronchial valves (EBV) are frequently deployed after pulmonary resection in noncritically ill patients to reduce and eliminate bronchopleural fistulas (BPFs) with persistent air leak (PAL). Information regarding EBV placement in mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS and high volume persistent air leaks is rare and limited to case reports. We describe three cases where EBV placement facilitated endotracheal extubation in patients with severe respiratory failure on prolonged mechanical ventilation with BPFs. In each case, EBV placement led to immediate resolution of PAL. We believe endobronchial valve …

Pembrolizumab Reactivates Pulmonary Granulomatosis, Majdi Al-Dliw, Mohammed Megri, Ibrahim M. Shahoub, Gaurav Sahay, Teresa I. Limjoco, Yousef Shweihat

Internal Medicine

Sarcoid like reaction is a well-known entity that occurs as a consequence to several malignancies or their therapies. Immunotherapy has gained a lot of interest in the past few years and has recently gained approval as first line therapy in multiple advanced stage malignancies. Pneumonitis has been described as complication of such therapy. Granulomatous inflammation has been only rarely reported subsequent to immunotherapy. We describe a case of granulomatous inflammation reactivation affecting the lungs in a patient previously exposed to Pembrolizumab and have evidence of a distant granulomatous infection. We discuss potential mechanisms of the inflammation and assert the importance …

E-Health Intervention For Intergenerational Caregivers Of Chronically Ill Older Adults, A.M. Steffen, J. Epstein, K. Arenella Jul 2017

E-Health Intervention For Intergenerational Caregivers Of Chronically Ill Older Adults, A.M. Steffen, J. Epstein, K. Arenella

Psychology Faculty Works

Family-clinician communication is important for chronic disease self-management and improves outcomes for older adults and their family caregivers. In this e-health program based on principles from Social Cognitive Theory, adults assisting a parent with medical appointments and medication management were randomly assigned to one of two internet-based education interventions: (I.) Written didactics and video clips from medical experts, or (II.) Multimedia vignettes depicting actors responding to common healthcare challenges. Participants (N=136) had access to these materials for one month and completed pre- and post-intervention assessments. Post-intervention hierarchical regression analyses showed an intervention effect after controlling for pre-intervention scores. Relative to …

Examining The Influence And Role Of Pharmacogenetics Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nuha Shaker Jul 2017

Examining The Influence And Role Of Pharmacogenetics Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nuha Shaker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pharmacogenetics is the study of genomic-guided individualized drug prescription that plays an important role in preventing the severe adverse effects of drugs, decreasing the time and cost of therapeutic choices, and directing healthcare professionals to choose medications that are effective and safe. It is noteworthy that this approach becomes highly beneficial in patients suffering from chronic diseases or disorders, since these conditions may require multiple and long term pharmacological therapies, as in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, public acceptance is a major challenge when implementation of pharmacogenetics merges into clinical practice. The purpose of this study is a) …
