Psychological & Psychosocial Deficits Among Pediatric Survivors Of Hematological Neoplasms, Elizabeth Ross
Psychological & Psychosocial Deficits Among Pediatric Survivors Of Hematological Neoplasms, Elizabeth Ross
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Pediatric cancer patients are surviving cancer and living long, relatively healthy lives due to advances in pediatric cancer therapeutics. Even with modern medical research and technology, pediatric cancer is still the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. Based on statistics from the American Cancer Society (ACS), hematological cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, are the leading type of non-solid malignancies in children (ACS, 2016). For decades pediatric cancer survival rates have steadily increased with an overall cure rate of over 75%.
While it is great that the survivor rate has and is steadily …
Delirium Rates Increasing In Elderly Hospitalized Patients, Sarah Jane Soffel
Delirium Rates Increasing In Elderly Hospitalized Patients, Sarah Jane Soffel
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Delirium commonly affects hospitalized elderly patients, and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity, among other detrimental outcomes. Delirium is increasing in prevalence, yet remains under detected. Many of the negative effects of hospitalization, such as immobility, dehydration, and polypharmacy, increase the risk for developing delirium. Early detection of delirium remains an important factor for treatment and reversal. The aim of the integrative literature review was to determine whether delirium rates are increasing among elderly hospitalized patients, as well as to identify risk factors associated with delirium and nursing interventions that may prevent the increasing prevalence of delirium. The study …

Advanced Maternal Age And The Correlation Between Cesarean Birth Rates, Hope Campbell
Advanced Maternal Age And The Correlation Between Cesarean Birth Rates, Hope Campbell
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the mean age of mothers at the delivery of their first child has increased from 24.9 years to 26.3 years between 2000 and 2014. Miscarriages, financial instability, lack of a partner and more effective contraception may also be associated with the increasing rate of delayed pregnancy. The increasing rate of delayed pregnancy could contribute to the higher rate of cesarean section deliveries in women over the age of 35 which could lead to an increased risk to mother and fetus. The rising cesarean rate is associated with rising costs and …

Provider Barriers to Delivery of Quality Transgender Healthcare
Background: Transgender encompasses anyone who does not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Due to the previous DSM-IV Gender Identity Disorder diagnosis, transgender was considered a pathology. The 2013 DSM-V switch to Gender Dysphoria depathologized the transgender identity. Subsequently, transgender care is now covered by insurance and considered part of expected patient care when before it was not covered. This research study focuses on provider reported barriers to trans healthcare over patient reported, though some patient reports were used in conjunction with provider perspective.
Objective: The objective of this …

Development And Testing Of Cancer Treatment Shared Decision Making Scale For Nurses, Pamela Katz
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) has emerged as the preferred model for decision-making in treatment decisions for cancer patients. Patient outcomes are maximized when this model is used since the patient is more engaged and empowered to be a part of their care. Yet, there are many barriers to participation in SDM that must be overcome from the patient, practitioner, and structural perspectives. It is important to find a way to accurately measure nurses’ competency in SDM since they are the ones spending the lion’s share of time with patients.
Theoretical Framework: The framework for SDM has evolved over the …

Rates Of Autoimmune Disease Increasing In Women, Rosa De La Cotera
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Autoimmune disorders (AD) are a group of highly disabling pathological conditions that are growing at an alarming rate affecting approximately 8% of the population. These disorders occur more frequently in women, as 78% of those diagnosed are women. Little conclusive research has been conducted as to determine why there is a tremendous sex disparity when looking at the rates. Due to the overall poor health that results from these disorders, there is an increase in the societal burden in terms of health care costs, loss of work productivity and reduced quality of life. The aim of this integrative literature …

Understanding The Chondrogenic Potential Of Articular Chondrocytes, Krishna Sarma
Understanding The Chondrogenic Potential Of Articular Chondrocytes, Krishna Sarma
Theses & Dissertations
Articular cartilage is a smooth, visco-elastic, aneural, avascular tissue made of water, an exquisitely organized framework of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, and collagen fibrils and articular chondrocytes. It’s beautiful organization and composition provide it with the flexibility and strength to cover, protect and lubricate the ends of long bones in a diarthrodial joint. Cartilage homeostasis relies on articular chondrocytes to translate the mechanical forces of daily activity into efficient remodeling of the extracellular matrix. Age, joint injury, or other insulting factors can progressively incapacitate articular chondrocytes, resulting in cartilage lesions that devolve to degenerative joint disease. Therefore, the central idea explored in …

The pineal gland is a small pinecone-shaped and functionally endocrine structure located in the epithalamus region. Developmentally, the pineal gland is considered as a part of the epithalamus. It plays a role in the entrainment of the circadian rhythms of an organism by producing melatonin, a functionally important hormone. Lesions of the pineal region are rare compared to other parts of the brain. A lesion may be tumorous or non-tumorous in nature. The most common lesions are tumors that are pineal parenchymal tumors (PPT) in origin. Gliomas are the second most common tumors in the pineal region. We report a …
